Quest 64 Roleplay Interest Thread:

Some things to note before we get started;

This is not going to be a roleplay entirely for children. As the game is set in the middle ages as is, we won't be "kiddifying" our language. Not to say it'll be an adult game, definitely not, but it's not for kids. Swears happen, violence is normal in the game, and destruction/death is usual.

So please keep that in mind right away.

This is going to be based upon Quest 64 and Quest RPG: Brian's Journey storyline.

However, there is no plan where the starting town will be, yet. This is due to first seeing who the players'll be. As is, where it would make the most sense. Because of this, there will be far more roleplaying than just fighting, so no, this isn't going to be all about battles and HP Meters, and so on. This is a neat combination of both.

One thing to also note is that the list of playable characters will be reduced to the most basic of monsters, and 3 specific races; Human, Dwarf, and Elf. This is simply due to what exists in the game, and nothing more. Depending where we start, and how many people want to play, will determine a bit of the monster choices. If we have few players, it's easier to start in a low-level area, as we want weaker monsters that'll level up, or, of course, weaker characters that gain strength through battling and natural roleplaying experience.

In a sense, this does have some Dungeons & Dragons style of experience thrown in. You will not be rewarded for mindlessly killing, so keep that in mind before making a character. Every character being played(outside of NPC's) is considered an Original Character. In that case, you will be choosing around, say, 70 or so possible races.(list will be available in the signup sheet) with appropriate stats. Depending the outcome of the choices given, the stats will reflect that. If only monsters are played, they'll be somewhat bumped up so they can "survive" battles.

Lastly, languages have been divvied into two main choices; Common and Monster. To make things simple, all Player Characters(who you guys play as) will know both. However, some Monsters and NPC's will only know one or the other. This'll be something you'll find out as you roleplay. Finally, the story has a somewhat dependence on the PC choices. If all monsters, it may change who the real villains are, and vice versa if there are Humanoids being played.

Thus, it's not set in stone. Any questions will be answered by "Irene" or my Quest 64-based sockpuppet, Whiteairknight. We are the same person. All images are available from that sockpuppet, and you can find the list at http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/forumite_icon_gallery.php?fortroper=Whiteairknight Please request with the page and number. I will tell you if it's a playable character/race. I do not have a picture of Humans/Dwarves/Elves. Use any picture you want for those.

I'd definitely be interested. Are Were Hares a playable race, by any chance?

Indeed they are. Were Hares are druidic rabbits unleashed by Lavaar when he stole the Eletale Book. They are of the Wind element, and as a playable race, dabble in Water as well.

If you specifically want to play it, I'll send the actual image. I already have it uploaded on this account, so I don't need to switch over. Once this roleplay gets underway, your stats/spells will be given later. Any other takers?

I'm interested. Could I get a list of what the playable monster races would be? Like, the pictures are good, but names are even better.

Okay, this'll take me a bit.

First Continent: Were Hare, Hell Hound, Parassault, Bumbershoot, Big Mouth, Man Eater, Bat, Kobold, Marionasty, Frog Knight, Man Trap, Mad Doll, Death Hugger, Goblin, Apophis, Cockatrice, Frog King, Dark Goblin, Ghost Stalker, Hot Lips, Treant

Second Continent: Were Hare, Ork Jr., Gremlin, Ghost Hound, Merrow, Skeleton, Wolf Goat, Skelebat, Blood Jell, Wyvern, Scare Crow, Arachnoid, Termant, Temptress, Thunder Jell, Ork, Jack-O-'Lantern, Lamia, Multi Optics, Crawler, Mimic, Scorpion, Grangach, Pixie

Third Continent: Blood Jell, Wyvern, Scarecrow, Cryshell, Fish Man, Caterpillar, Sprite, Will-O-'Wisp, Ghost, Nightmare, Blue Man, Sand Man, Were Cat, Magma Fish, Rocky, Flamed Mane, Red Wyvern, Ogre, Gloom Wing, Winged Sunfish

These monsters are not playable(bosses not on this list): Red Rose Knight, White Rose Knight, Judgment, Spriggan, Pale Rider, Pinhead. The first two are on the Third Continent, but serve explicitly under a key villain(who is evil to everyone no matter what), and the last four are from Mammon's World, which cannot be started in and they're too powerful anyway.

So yeah like I said on Chatzy I think since a lot of people are interested in this we should put a posting limit on. One post per GM post during big events. It keeps general chaos down and has makes the players focus on what's going on.
Irene 2
That rule is added. Also, the current Sign-Up Sheet is ready.

I know it's a little early to have it up, but this'll give time to sort it out.
Yeah, I'm a sock of Irene. Yep.

Might join. Depends on how fast some other threads are going.
I wanna be the very best... you now have that song stuck in your head. Cheers.

This roleplay may not be very fast.

As noted, there's a nice list of character choices, and the actual sign-up sheet is already linked.

If you have any questions, please ask. smile
Yeah, I'm a sock of Irene. Yep.

Okay so...after signing up I realize that sign up sheet might be a bit much to keep up with in a forum RP. And its supposed to change as we go along? To be honest I'd rather leave stuff like stats out of it considering its going to be completely story oriented. I'd rather have a set of abilities to begin with and stick with that.
Irene 2
The stats'll be updated specifically when told.

So that won't be a worry in itself.

Also, the reason for the stats themselves is that the actual battle system takes those fully into account.
Yeah, I'm a sock of Irene. Yep.

Its just that in this format a battle system doesn't really...work. I've tried before. You'd think it would be it doesn't. Integrating gameplay into a forum RPG isn't very smooth.
Irene 2
Well, I'm doing all the work, so no worries. wink

But you have a point.

There's no real way to determine balance due to the design of the original game. Actual stats were taken into account when creating it, mind you.

I may have to scrap this for a while. :/
Yeah, I'm a sock of Irene. Yep.

Red Emporer
Okay then.
Irene 2
Alright, due to the things happening, it's best to ask how you guys want to play this(on the forums, specifically).

Should we scrap the general stats(minus the Elements themselves, since that determines your spells), or should I continue as it is, with data that the players update?
Yeah, I'm a sock of Irene. Yep.

With combat it'd be more challenging to not use stats IMO (no way of knowing how much damaging we're doing, etc.), but without things would go a lot faster. If I had to choose I'd go with stats only if I was fully aware of the consequences and could plan around them.

Personally, I think that not having stats is likely to run better, mostly because we won't have to deal with problems of progression and updating characters when anyone levels up.
Irene 2
Okay, I wasn't being entirely specific.

What will stay;

  • Your Element Total
  • Your Spells
  • Your Item List
  • Your regular battle Exp Percentage
  • Spirit Gemstone List

What won't; Everything else. Battles will be roleplayed out, obviously. People will still take turns. The stats won't do as much.
Yeah, I'm a sock of Irene. Yep.

I don't really think we should have game mechanics at all. Because like I said. They don't work in this format. In a game you go into a feild and kill monsters until you spontaneously get a power boost and a new skill from nowhere.

In actual narritive a character much like a real person would have to work on their skills study magic and blah, blah, blah. And it not only becomes a part of the story but character development as well. This is why alot of stories that take place in a video game simply cut out the level grinding.

hey is to late to sign up?
you can't kill your problem away. they just come back as zombies.

Irene 2
[up][up] The actual elemental level-ups are rather key for the roleplay to work. Namely because regular spells are available to all players just by grinding.(albeit, some races can't get certain spells) I'm thinking that maybe some unique/boss spells could be earned, though.

[up] Currently sign-ups are closed at this time due to retooling the roleplay. Sorry about this, stonedog.

In addition, I was going to limit the total players to six, but no limit shall exist. However, there's a limit of 6 characters per team(Enemies or Players) in battle.

Still though you can't really simulate the experience of playing the game in a forum RP. Its just not possible. Gameplay Story Segregation is a thing for a reason. In real life people don't have stats of levels and they can't learn to shoot fire by whacking 70 goblins on the head.

We can right epic freaking stories about heroes honing their skills and over coming challenges to do...whatever it is we're trying to do, and it will still be fun.

If you want to ex[erience the game mechanics of Quest 64 I think a better option would be to go out and find an N64 and a copy of the game. Or an emulator.
Irene 2
Actually, due to fourth wall breakage, it's been easily done where people acknowledging they leveled up. It actually does work fine.

If you don't mind breaking the fourth wall, but the game does that through exposition anyway.

I'm going to have to disagree on it not working at all. Especially since NPC's will tell you about this stuff, and the whole "controller" and "buttons" are common knowledge for the roleplay. So it won't really break it, or anything.

If every spell had to be learned by some event, and some players can have up to 60 spells, many would be left out in the cold. Some monsters are already limited in their spell list, and wouldn't want to be unable to learn much of anything, being stuck with one poor spell for the whole game.(or two, perhaps)

This game is based more upon spells, and not weapons. Weapons themselves are starting and are only updated through the Lottery. Spells are practically candy to be given out and aren't terribly hard to learn, since that's entirely what the battles are based upon, magic play.
Yeah, I'm a sock of Irene. Yep.
