Preston hates my guts, which is why I'm still getting settlement rescue quests to do, even though I'm Overboss of the Nuka-World Raiders. I like the way that Bethesda brought back his voice actor to do some work for the DLC though.

What pisses me off is the Minutemen attacks on my newly conquered Raider settlements. I'm the General of the Minutemen still, but I can't give them orders to fuck the fuck right off and stop shooting at my subjects. And Piper really hates it if she sees you mow down a Minutemen hit team in front of her, to the point where she ends up shooting at you.

If you go betraying the Commonwealth by becoming a Raider leader, do you honestly expect for your shiny title as PROTECTOR OF THE FUCKING COMMONWEALTH to mean anything anymore? OF COURSE Preston is going to send hit squads after you and your settlements. He's doing his god damned job of not betraying the Commonwealth. Honestly, they should have added a conversation to the game where people in your situation get a nice little "You're really doing this? FUCK YOU. You're not the General anymore. See you on the battlefield, traitor."

I'd like that, actually. As long as I get to kill him and make it stick as part of the story. The way that Bethesda handled this situation instead, with him pissed at you yet not brave enough to fight personally, sending his mooks in his place, makes me think that they didn't think it all the way through.

They're very good at atmosphere but when it comes to coding far reaching story changes due to your actions, they've been slipping. I mean, the endings to main/side quests don't really appreciably change the world in either this or Skyrim.

No, this isn't the Freedom Radio assignments,

this is the random

"[Settlement] is under attack" that randomly pops up.

Four of my settlements were besieged by raiders, supermutants, gunners, and ghouls.

Not all at once, but each within a day of each other. I've never had these missions spawn this quickly before.

I can attest that that happens regularly to me. Usually after I fast travel. I never have Radio Freedom on nor do I ever talk to Preston Garvey.

Yeah sometimes the raids get out of hand if you don't lather on the defenses.

But like, these settlments have defense stats in the upper eighties.

I've since bumped them up to 150s, but now I'm out of aluminum.

I found that it helps to have your defenses spread out to cover all angles.

The defence stat needs to be higher then all the other resources, including power, combined to have an effect on the frequency.

If you have become a water barron this will quickly become a pain in the ass.

Only 150 defense? Piker. tongue My version of Sanctuary Hills has about three times that number, at least. I adore machinegun turrets.

BTW, if you're short of resources, and you're on PC, I recommend these mods:

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11337/? - Portable Workshop Enhanced - it works by allowing you to make grenades that when you throw them and they explode, automatically deploy a toolbox which if you open it gives you a standard workshop menu. Which you can use to scrap lots of stuff that is in the vanilla scrap lists. Combined with this mod:

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/5320/? - Scrap Everything - and the ini file tweak suggested on the description page, you can scrap almost everything else. Including most houses and so on.

Suddenly the Commonwealth gets a whole lot emptier.

i've heard bad things about the scrap everything mod. Can't you accidentally scrap important NP Cs or something?

You can accidentally scrap basically anything that is a full model. Like doors to buildings or NP Cs or important objects. I think you can even scrap parts of the world if you're not careful.

I'd recommend Spring Cleaning instead. You still have to be careful you're not scrapping one of the Sanctuary houses' foundations when you're trying to clear out the leaf piles inside them, but at least you don't have to worry about accidentally deleting Preston or anything.

Also, for a more immersive way of maximizing your resources, try Wearable Backpacks to increase your hauling limit, and Salvage Beacons so you can dump your junk off in front of the dungeon and let your settlers take it back to base for you while you do more important things. It's amazing how much time you save when you're not fast-traveling back and forth between Sanctuary and salvage sites.

...Deleting Preston you say? }:)

I know it would probably break the game but it is occasionally tempting.

. . . what do you get when you scrap a NPC?

I'd assume some meat, bones, a skull, and maybe trivial amounts of some metals and some water.

I think one mod gives you little tombstones to place when you scrap dead NPCs. Not sure if I want to go that far, but I should look into getting something that keeps that corpse from respawning at Taffington Boathouse. It's really throwing off the ambience of the bunkroom.

In other news, something happened that actually made me feel discomfort about blowing up the Institute for the sixth or seventh time. Right after the ending cinematic, a True Storms monster Radstorm rolled over downtown Boston, sheets of rain, near-constant staticky thunder, dense clouds of irradiated dust, the works. A coincidence, surely.

There's plenty of mods that reduce the frequency of his radiant quests, you know. In fact, in my current playthrough I'm actually getting annoyed with Preston because he isn't giving me things to do - I was nearly level thirty and he still wasn't giving me the quest to take the Castle, so I had to start "Taking Independence" through the console. And then it completed twice for some reason. Now I'm waiting for him to give me quests to recruit more settlements, since when I swing by and talk to the NPCs, they all seem hunky-dory.

So I'm on survival mode. I love the extra requirements. Hate the fucking save policy with a burning passion. You can guess what happened. An hour or so of work burned out by some random hidden raider blowing my head off outside Drumlin Diner while I'm on a trade run. New policy: Sleep an hour before heading out anywhere. Ought to save me trouble in the future.

Boom. Now that I've perfected that save policy, I honestly have no interest in returning to the lower difficulty modes. They feel cheap. Walking everywhere lets you explore more deeply, and sometimes making a second pass can net you more stuff.

I've got Sanctuary rigged up as a small farming community of 19 people, complete with defenses and a partially filled power station. Complete with pylons running down to the waterfront. I'm using it to run a few defensive guns and a trio of industrial purifiers so I can start being a water baron. Next up a weapon, armor, and ammo factory building to be hooked up to those pylons.
