The Brotherhood wants to kill all synths because they're technophobic. This is unacceptable to me.

There's nothing wrong with a synth existing. By all indications, they appear to be intelligent and self-aware. They deserve the same rights as other people.

The only thing that makes synths problematic is their role as infiltrators and that's not exclusively a synth thing. Spies in your midst trying to undermine your society are bad. It doesn't matter if they're robot spies or human spies or shifty-eyed Brahmin. If synths aren't acting as spies, if they aren't killing and replacing people in service to their moustache-twirling creators, then there's nothing wrong with having them around. Nick and Curie are perfect examples of this: what makes them "good" synths is that they aren't pretending to be anything they're not. They're machines and proud of it.

This is where the Brotherhood has it backwards. They believe that the existence of synths makes the Institute problematic. I maintain that the existence of the Institute is what makes synths problematic. Take away the Institute and there will be no reason why synths shouldn't be allowed to integrate into society.

You do realise a Courser is the first rouge synth we ever meet yes?

They are no diffrent from the others, besides being higher end.

I mainly side with the Brotherhood because I find them the best bet to bring stability to the Commonwealth even if Synths have to be destroyed. Plus I don't find find wiping out synths all that bad considering they seem to like attacking my settlements en-mass with no provocation.

Saying the Brotherhood brings stability to the Commonwealth is like saying the US state building in the Middle East was a wild success.

I don't have the game yet, but while I can side with the brotherhood for the sake of seeing what side with them is like, I don't like this chapter and would wipe them out more often than not.

[up][up] ... You know, now that I think about it, that's actually a quite apt comparison. The Brotherhood's primary interest in the Commonwealth is the eradication of the Institute, an organization that operates clandestinely from within the Commonwealth but spreads terror far outside it's borders with the use of synth sleeper agents, a practice not dissimilar in principle to terrorism. The Brotherhood wants the Institute gone because it can construct synths, which is technological power they cannot be trusted with. Maxson even goes as far as to say that synths pose an existential risk to Humankind. Synths are, in a sense, a kind of Weapon of Mass Destruction to the Brotherhood.

Is Fallout 4 just one big reference to the War on Terror?

Gault: I am actually fairly certain that is not an accidental parallel there. That includes trouble with the local power bases due to leadership issues leading to struggling small communities who are at the outset of the game deprived of the local protection, rise of the Gunners and bandit camps due to a sudden power vacuum, and even the Institute as you put it being oddly terrorist like.

The Minutemen are even a sort of odd reflection of the supposed ideal of Hearts and Minds. Protecting the local populace preferably with reasonably capable local forces, protection by means such as fortifying communities, clearing out local threats, establishing stable access to food and water lines, and even encouraging commerce to help promote stability and access to economic gains for the communities.

I think you're right. It's not a one-to-one parallel, obviously- and it can't be given the post-apocalyptic setting- but it's damn close in a lot of important areas.

At first, I thought the emphasis the game places on settlement-building was kind of an odd priority, but considering what Fallout 4's central plot is, it's actually quite thematically coherent.

Definetly. The Gunners even seem to represent a recurring problem in the Middle East with hired guns. Namely it is not uncommon for them to prey on the local populace or to go rogue and establish themselves as a local power typically via Warlordism. They are also often used to do the dirty work of various regimes and groups. Which fits the description of the Gunners very well.

The game I thought resembled the war on terror the most is actually New Vegas.

Legion has an ideology and set of tactics similar to your typical middle eastern extremist, the NCR is a western power similar to America. They're fighting a war in the desert against the Legion, but this war has been going on for very long and has become unpopular, and the NCR has been criticized for imperialism.

I thought it more resembled the US aggressive westward expansion, conflict with the other colonial powers, and the "Indian Wars" complete with the "bringing of law and order" to some of the still wild parts of the Frontier. Which included a struggle for some possible form of independence as the expanding frontier brought the organization, laws, and regulations of civilization in it's wake. You even have the subjugation of the tribal elements or their forced adaption into a different society then the ones they started out as.
