We've all seen derails in threads that we've had to wonder exactly what set of circumstances could have led to them. We shall talk about them here.

Like, I just saw in the "Sexism and Men's Issues" thread in OTC there is currently a derail about peeing and toilets. Yep.

Lesbeemons in the Homestuck thread.

At least I think that was how the portmanteau or lesbians and pokemon was spelled? I didn't participate and only saw it later so I may be wrong.

The Metal Gear Solid thread derailed into a conversation about Metroid once. I used the opportunity to suggest a Metal Gear Solid 3/Metroid crossover fanfic.

Is this just for this site? If not, I once saw a thread on a comic book forum that went like this. Basically, a random, nameless character died in an issue, but this character looked quite similar to a named character who hadn't been seen in a while; thus, the thread was about if the writer had stealthily killed off that character. Somehow this turned into a conversation about Renaissance Fair jousting.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."

I remember a thread in the old IJBM sub-forum called "Idiots who think they are smart." :o

I helped in the derailing. :3

I remember one thread that started out bitching about an upcoming Seltzer And Friedberg movie. Then it turned into a discussion about how to drive them out of business, then about how to kill them. It was fun in a twisted sort of way.

Looking for some stories?

[up]To be fair, that's the only logical endpoint of a S&F-related thread.

@Ira: Oh God, that was the most awesome thing ever.

@OP: I can kind of see how the peeing and toilets thing came about. I've been on some feminist sites that say that toilet facilities is also a part of discrimination (mostly for transgender people).

Uhh, what? Toilets are about as unisex as you can make them.

Well the toilet itself isn't discrimination, but I guess the thought process is that transgender people don't know what bathroom to go to, so there needs to be more unisex bathrooms.

No, the thought process that led to that derail was "Men can't pee sitting down when they are drunk and have a stiffie." I wish I was making this up. It was literally about toilets and peeing and not about restrooms themselves at all.

And here's a question that will probably prompt a derail of its own but, would unisex bathrooms do anything to decrease the line for the women's bathroom?

Just have a "MEN", a "WOMEN", and a "WHOEVER NEEDS TO PEE AND CAN'T WAIT FOR ONE OF THE OTHER BATHROOMS".

More seriously, I saw a suggestion once to change the labels to "restroom with urinal" and "restroom without urinal" or something along those lines.

Also I am amused that the thread about thread derails is now kinda derailed.

Stupid doomed timeline...

Back to the topic of this thread, a few days ago the OTC Gun Thread briefly derailed into a conversation of Fragile Matter, non-Newtonian fluids, and ketchup.

So, is this thread about bizarre thread derails or about making them? tongue
