Hmm. Is the AI 'just' software or is it tied to specific hardware?
Also, what size of storage device would be required to hold it, and would it 'survive' being smuggled out in packets?
Reality is for those who lack imagination.

They're tied to their hardware, at least as far as they know. The hardware containing their key fuctions (ie, their personality) is small enough to fit into a backpack, and they probably wouldn't survive being smuggled out bit by bit.

Hmm, what if the AI faked a hardware malfunction and the human took the hardware the AI was stored on away to be "scrapped"?

Pretty much what it says on the tin. I've got a story where a human labrat and an AI who among other things is part of the security system, but who isn't supposed to be sapient (it just sort of gradually 'woke up' after it had been online for a while), is trying to keep the fact that it is secret, and doesn't have access to the internet, escape from the research lab they're in. Thing is, I'm not sure how they'd accomplish it, hence this post.
