The heroes reach the lowest part of some ruins they happened across. At the bottom of the last stairwell, they find a huge room with a glowing pool in the center. The pool gives off greenish and bluish light as monsters from another dimension slowly rise out of it. The monsters are intangible until they reach the surface far above. The heroes watch a little longer, then head back up to warn someone about the pool.

The protagonist takes a look at the bleak scenery of the place he has found himself in: a burnt-down grey-black wasteland where even the buildings' charred carcasses have mostly collapsed on themselves and large chunks of land are missing, having been beamed up to serve as ammo for orbital railguns long ago. The ground is flat as a table top and very warm for some reason. There is no wind.
Nonsense is better than no sense at all.
