"So let's set the world on fire / we can burn brighter than the sun"
Looks like they did.
My biggest issue is with the way they score the songs... It doesn't matter how good the song is, if it was released after June, it's not making the top 25. Because it won't have the airtime/sales that the songs that were released in the first half of the year. No matter how popular/good it is.
Granted, such songs are usually in the top 25 the following year(a la Sexy and I Know It)...
That said, anything that has a Gotye song at #1 is objectively wrong. Regardless of how it came to be...
Disappointed Thinkin' Bout You wasn't there.
If you don't like a single Frank Ocean song, you have no soul.I don't think it got much airplay outside of hip-hop/R&B stations.
Okay, HOW did Gotye have the biggest hit of the year, yet not even hit the Bubbling Under Hot 100 with anything after that?!
Also, the country music one is rather b0rked. "Time Is Love" was the biggest hit? That's only the second year the country singles year-end #1 hit is something that didn't hit #1 on the weekly chart.

Related: DJ Earworm's annual "United State of Pop" mashup is out now, and I think out of all of them, this is the best so far.
Gotye's "Eyes Wide Open" was #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 after his SNL appearance, and that really has nothing to do with how inescapable "Somebody That I Used To Know" was for about 75% of the year.
None of these are really shockers, except "Lights", which I swore ran its course last year. Maybe I'm just tripping.
I still can't believe that he got absolutely zero momentum from "Somebody That I Used to Know".
Come to think of it, Josh Turner's followup to "Time Is Love" isn't doing too well either.
OOOH. I thought you were like, "he shouldn't be on here, he doesn't have any other songs!" Sorry about that.
Well I think Gotye may become a One-Hit Wonder here in the States. I also doubt that fun. will get much more hits either. I am surprised that "Somebody That I Used To Know" is #1 and not "We Are Young". I've heard the latter much more than the former. Also I am surprised that "Party Rock" is still #29 despite the fact that it came out the beginning of last year.
In which we say how this song totally should've been on there and I've never heard of that one and oh God I hate this song why is it so high and I'm so happy this one is on there. And other such stuff.
So, here it is, the most popular songs of the year according to the oldest music magazine that's still around: http://www.billboard.com/news/the-best-of-2012-the-year-in-music-1008045682.story#/charts-year-end/hot-100-songs?year=2012
