The Grand Unified Appearance Trope Clean-up:

Go To

On TV Tropes, it's very common for editors to misuse appearance tropes, as well as tropes whose names make them sound like they could be appearance tropes.

Meaningful Appearance tropes are often misused in ways that overlook the "Meaningful" aspect, resulting in Zero Context Examples and misuse in the form of examples that have no meaning even if the tropes themselves are not People Sit on Chairs.

The Appearance Tropes Cleanup sandbox covers tropes with potential issues. Tropes that simply require cleanup will go through this thread, while tropes that require more significant action will have to go through the Trope Repair Shop.

April 2, 2023 update: This thread is no longer for making changes to tropes, and was brought back from the Projects Morgue solely for cleanup. Making changes to tropes is still a job for the Trope Repair Shop.

[up] That is what we have been discussing in its thread in the shop, the thread is currently devolved into 'cut' 'do not cut' instead of you know doing things.

Boss types are generally more Sexy Spectacles Office Lady types though.

[up]x2 The first trope could cover "this character is cute with glasses".

Would Shrinking Violet cover Timid part of classes wearers? Sam from Rocket Power wears glasses and is timid. But I wouldn't call him a Shrinking Violet.

No, Shrinking Violet does not require glasses or anything to that effect. It is a sub trope of Moe but our trope does not mean what it needs to mean for that.

Again though we have been discussing that in the other thread, please go there I don't want to have to retype every single post I already made.

Meganekko has its own TRS thread. I think it should be discussed there.

Sorry if this is coming out of left field, but I feel like I should ask about this:

I clicked on the Random Trope button, and it took me straight to Opera Gloves, which was basically just a short paragraph saying that it was turned into a Useful Notes page.

Should I be able to get to a more-or-less deprecated page like that by clicking Random Trope? Or is that something that gets fixed later on in the whole cleanup process?

^ Seems more like a question for ATT than this forum. For the record, I myself have actually landed on pages that were cut by using the 'Random Trope' button.

Regarding the Opera Gloves cleanup, the YKTTW Dressed Like a Dominatrix looks ready for launch. Anything still missing there before it goes up?

"Partial subtrope"? They're tropes that in several cases overlap, but aren't defined by each other. A subtrope is a specific variant of a trope, not a trope that's sort of similar.

^ Yeah, we need to fix that. "All Xs are Ys" is not the same as "Some As are Bs".

Ok, did that. I'll give this another three days for more comments to come in before launching.

I have issues with the name "Dressed Like a Dominatrix". I think something about the personality requirement should be in the title. We've seen what happens to appearance tropes with titles that only reference the appearance.

From what I see, this trope is about a costume; a fully costume with all the little pieces and is supposed to be a visual shorthand that the character is evil or dominant. Also, if the person actually is what they are dressing as, then they don't count as this "trope". So then it has to be someone that is not a dominatrix but just dresses and acts like one. Third, all of the above could not be present and it's just Author Appeal or fanservice. This thing is headed for misuse.

Another thing, if we already have a trope for Dominatrix then why do we need another page for people that just dress like them?

Can we talk about Tall, Dark, and Handsome sometime? I don't think much needs to be done. It isn't YMMV but it say that the straight examples are 'highly subjective'. I would think that the character is either established to be attractive or he's not.

Sounds like a relic from attractiveness tropes being focused on the audience instead of how the story portrays things.

Does the thread title need to be changed? Because 1) the crowner is closed, and apparently has been for quite a while, and 2) it looks like you're not in Opera Gloves anymore. If you would like me to update it, what should I change it to?

I don't see any reason to change most of it; I'm asking whether it still needs the note about the crowner, and which trope you're on now.

We were discussing (and in the process of cleaning) Woman In Black before other topics were brought up, so maybe that.

Changed the thread title the right way, so that it actually links to the page.

Thanks, ~Septimus Heap. I couldn't get rid of the Opera Gloves link. It didn't show as being there in the edit box, but kept showing back up on the actual title. Message me with what you did, please?

Woman In Black has basically been dewicked. Someone else made the last big push. The only ones left are locked pages (3) a ghost wick and the laconic page.

The patterns I saw where the following

  1. ZCE
  2. "wears black clothes"
  3. is evil and or sexy

Perhaps a disambiguation between the latter two uses may be appropriate? They seem potentially meaningful.
