The Grand and Unified Appearance Trope Clean Up (now on ThighHighBoots):

Currently on the table: Thigh-High Boots

There is on TV Tropes, a common bad habit that persists among editors of using appearance tropes, or names that sound like they could be appearance tropes, badly. They always suffer from the same problems and they tend to clog up the TRS like they're on a revolving door. As such I'm making a large scale special effort in order to address the common problems all of these tropes have.

Sometimes non-appearance tropes are mistaken for appearance tropes. Report them here and the clean-up will be handled.

We're going to search for the best ways to change the culture and make sure that the misuse stops. Tropes will be handled here and we'll likely have a fair number of crowners on this thread. Keep checking back for new developments.

For full details, including the to-do list and crowner list, check this post.

When we cut Windows To, will it become a redirect for Windows Of?

No. Why would it? They have nothing to do with each other. It could be redirected to the appearance supertrope once we make it, but it's better to just cut it so it's not confused with Windows of the Soul (which, admittedly, could probably use a rename).
No. It's still an example of the first two, even if we aren't allowed to write about our feelings on the issue.
I disagree. Informed Attribute is when a statement about a character is not shown to be true. With Informed Attractiveness, however, it's subjective whether it's true.

[up] There's nothing subjective about characters pointing out another character is exceptionally attractive.

But to some, that character really is attractive and it may be just pointing it out while some don't find them attractive and think it's just being said so. Attractiveness in general is subjective.

[up]Subjectivity in real life does not mean every trope involving that is subjective. That's what In-Universe is about.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.
Attractiveness tropes being In-Universe would involve Informed Attractiveness.

Right now, the crowner is at 9-3 in favour of cutting.

Also, the last wicks for Mismatched Eyes are now disambiguated.

Seems pretty stable at this point. Call it?

[up] I'd like a few more votes before calling it, myself.

Question: Does the cut option entail redirecting the name to whatever the other trope will be renamed to?

"Cut" and "redirect" are two different things, so, no.

I guess the issue with Informed Attractiveness is that while the other "Attractive X" have usually more or less objective X, here it can be more subjective.

Also, namedropping this YKTTW of mine since many people maintaining this also seem to work on such tropes/things.

OK, well this crowner stabilized at this point. If there's not enough votes for a cut then I say we move on to the another trope (preferable one that doesn't have to do with eye colors) and come back to Windows to the Soul later.

Regarding the Windows of the Soul / Windows to the Soul business, I'd rather rename Windows to the Soul to something a bit more indicative, like Symbolic Eye Colors. It's a terrific misuse of the intention of the phrase.

Then we can rename Windows of the Soul to Windows to the Soul, which is the actual expression.

Further, any use of that trope that is in visual media should be removed.

There was some discussion about whether that would be The Same but More Specific of Significant Appearance or whatever the appearance supertrope is going to be named.

I added a new option for the crowner, which I think is better.

When we cut Windows To, will it become a redirect for Windows Of?

It definitely should be. The two phrases are commonly used interchangeably to mean the definition we currently have on "Windows of the Soul": seeing an emotion or reaction in someone's eyes.

Tweaked to proposed definition of Windows To/Windows Of on the crowner to specify that it does not apply in visual works — that it's a device in non-visual works only — Music, Literature, and suchlike.

Regarding the "Rename..." option, do we already have an index for collecting tropes about symbolic eye colors?
