(I'm not sure that this is the appropriate place in which to ask, nor that there haven't been other threads on this; a quick search turned up little, but I do apologise if I have chosen wrongly. ^^; )

I'm hoping to see some of my writing (short stories and a novella) published, but have not done so before, and so am finding myself very uncertain of which way to turn.

My usual genre is fantasy.

First, with reference to the short stories:

From what research I've done thus far, I gather that I should be looking to magazines to publish my short stories, but I'm honestly not sure of which ones are reputable or widely-read - I don't think that I had known that there were many such things these days, as most of what I've read about them seems to have referred to past publications, and most of my experience of short stories these days has been in anthologies and collections. (For one thing, it doesn't look as though we see many relevant print magazines in this country (South Africa.) Does anyone have any suggestions or insights on this?

Second, is this list a good one from which to work? Are the articles on the various magazines good sources of research? Are there any other magazines that I should look at?

Third, is it a significant disadvantage these days if the publication in question is an online magazine?

(I'm not presuming that I'll be in a position to pick and choose overmuch, but I do want to have some idea of what I'm looking at, and how to prioritise submissions.)

Finally, with regards to the novella: What do I do with it? From what I've read it's likely to be a tricky thing to sell. I don't know whether I'm likely to write more in its setting or vein at this point, so the one piece of advice that I've seen - collect it with a few others - doesn't seem likely just yet, and in any case I get the impression that selling such a thing as someone as-yet unpublished is unlikely.

I do think that it's at least decent, and I've had some good feedback on it, so I'd really like to at least attempt to see it published - I'm just not sure of how to do so. Does anyone have any advice?

My thanks for any help given! ^_^
