Right, I'm not sure if everyone ended up getting the memo on this, so for starters, here's IGN's article on it. Note CraftDinur's wall-of-text comment below.

I'm poking around all over trying to figure out what exactly is going on, and it looks like the original devs are no longer involved with Ace of Spades itself. Additionally, Jagex plans on taking down the free version - and the servers along with it - ahead of their (rewritten) openGL version on Steam, referring to the free version as a prototype.

Now, from what I understand, Jagex is basically responsible for the current RuneScape being... well, whatever it is now.

Jagex is responsible for the creation, development, running and updating of Runescape since it's original launch in 2001, yes. I'll go read the article now, just felt like saying that first.
