The Ponytail Shape Equation is a fourth-order nonlinear differential equation predicting the general shape of a ponytail given the length and arbitrary curliness of the hairs. (By comparison, the Friedmann equations describing the expansion of the universe under the principles of general relativity are only second-order.)

Researchers found, however, that the second and fourth derivative terms could be safely ignored with no loss of accuracy. The remaining equation has an exact solution, which still provides an excellent fit to observed ponytails.

In 1784, Chunosuke Matsuyama and 43 companions were shipwrecked while hunting sunken treasure. They were never seen again, and nothing was learned of their fate for 150 years, when a message Chunosuke had carved on strips of coconut and placed in a bottle washed ashore in his hometown. The crew were unable to find supplies and slowly died of dehydration until he was the last alive.
