Watch the movie Trekkies and see people don't want to leave that universe and try to live in it 24/7.

As long as you don't hurt people, and you do what you need to to function in society, there is nothing wrong with rejecting regular society and immersing yourself in a fictional verse.

How do you function in society while living in a fantasyland 24/7?

I guess I could never see the appeal of spoilers for spoilers sake because context is everything. There are times where I've read about certain plot elements in advance and said "Wow this sounds really fucking stupid" but then thought it was handled very well in the actual film or TV show.

Even if I were just interested in the Expanded Universe I don't get the appeal of not seeing the movie but still wanting the entire thing spoiled beforehand.

Never mentioned anything about not seeing the movie, either. Just that a lot of us won't JUST see the movie. We'll be fine with spoilers, if we know that they're real.

And it's actually pretty easy to function in society while living in fantasy land 24/7. There's Star Trek groups that do just that. They wear Federation Uniforms whenever their jobs don't require something else, and they live by the Federation's high standards, and once people get used to them they realize they're not any worse than Boy Scout troop leaders.

Never heard of the Bunny-Ears Lawyer trope? It actually works in real life. Especially if your quirk is emulating a group of good guys with a high moral standard and a heavy appreciation for skilled workmanship. As long as you don't shove it down everyone else's throats most people are pretty tolerant. Other than trolls and the insecure, but who the fuck cares about trolls, and insecure people have their own problems.

And there's Star Wars fans wanting to make Jedi an official religion.

Long as they don't expect the actual Force to help them, there's nothing wrong with that. It's not as if real life doesn't already have monasteries and monks who live celibate lives without families. Jedi is based a lot on Buddhism, so when you cut out the Force it really could just be another sect of that. Be at peace and let your emotion flow like an undisturbed river. Away from you.

Uh huh. Sounds like Southerners pretending the Confederacy is still around. I'm sure those people are highly socially adjusted and can deal with the rest of planet Earth - oh, and I'm sure Federation credits are just as valid as Confederate currency.

Well, for those who aren't trolling for trolling's sake (You adapt where adaptation is necessary, they wouldn't be using Fed Creds they'd be using dollars and holding down real jobs), I am going to watch this one. Probably when it comes out on DVD. Not sure I want to deal with the crowds that'll pop up in the theaters.

ETA: Yeah, SNL is a parody show and is invalid as a source for anything true. Come back when you have a slew of articles about real life Trekkies actually trying to buy stuff with nonexistent Fed Creds.

I was just keeping the unilateral bashing of Star Trek balanced by referencing the Jedi movement.

I love Star Trek. Seen every film in opening day. But I'm not going to be a juror at the OJ Simpsons trial dressed in a Starfleet uniform. Nor am I going to have plastic surgery to have Vulcan ears.

At some point, you're going to have to live in the present and in reality. Escapist fiction is escapist. They're intended to be temporary escapism.

Reminds me of the old line: neurotics build castles in the sky. Psychotics live in them.

(The third line is "Psychiatrists collect the rent.")

You missed a line from my first post about the Trekkies. They wear their uniforms whenever their jobs don't require something else. I should clarify that they'll abandon the uniforms whenever real life demands it. Doesn't mean they won't view themselves as Federation citizens.

First a broken ankle, then a plane crash. Is this a cry for help?

In all seriousness, glad he's okay. Doesn't sound like he's hurt too bad.

Yeah, it's true - it's a lead story on the BBC breakfast news strand.

As a complete layperson, he seems to have pulled one heck of a good landing for the circumstances - on a golf course and with a ballsed up engine.

Thank crap he managed to walk away. I don't think us nerds could get over losing Spock and Han Solo within a week of each other.

This isn't even his first crash. He downed a helicopter he was piloting back in '99.

Moral of the story, don't let Harrison Ford near the pilot's seat.

I doubt the family of the young guy who was lost in the woods until Harrison Ford saved him would agree with you on that one.

Actually, people interviewed after the crash said he does the most thorough pre-flight safety checks on the planet. And look at it this way: Sullenberger had the gorramn Hudson Bay that he could glide onto and have a measure of buoyancy; Ford had a golf course and his plane came to a rest some 30 feet from a house. As far as I'm concerned, Harrison Ford is the best pilot on the planet.
