(I didn't find a thread for this in a quick search; my apologies if I simply searched poorly.) I'm glad to report that By Moon Alone, a webcomic that I've rather enjoyed thus far, has, I believe, recently returned from a long hiatus. For those who haven't encountered this webcomic before (and presuming that I'm remembering the story thus far correctly), By Moon Alone is the story of two young celestials, a boy and a girl, in afantasy world filled with monsters and magic. It is also the story of a girl in what seems to be our world, and a young boy who is her friend, telling her the stories of the celestials. Link to the first page. Link to the current page at time of writing. To start the discussion, what do you think of the idea that the boy and girl in "our world" might in some way truly be the boy and girl in the fantasy world - not simply imagined avatars, but incarnations, perhaps? There have, I seem to recall, been suggestions (here, for example) that more is going on that seems on the surface...
Not Actually Indie
I remember this from years back. I think it must have been on my favorites list on my old computer, but I didn't transfer over most of them, including all the ones that weren't updating at the time, so I'd pretty much forgotten about it. It seemed very good though.
...eventually, we will reach a maximum entropy state where nobody has their own socks or underwear, or knows who to ask to get them back.
Avvie-free for life!
I only skimmed a few sections but right from his first appearance Daniel seems to have something going on under the surface. The two worlds are definitely connected in some way.
A new page: the chapter four cover, and a rather odd-looking creature.
New page. It seems that Sola isn't quite as undefeatable as she seemed, and a new character appears.
New page (and a shout-out to this thread in the news post. ^_^) I think that this new Celestial's weapons are a little fishy. Would more such puns be out of line? I don't know whether tropers here spare the rod, or whether I'd be let off the hook... :P (Don't worry, I'm not just trying to bait you. :P) On another note (pun half-intended), has anyone listened to the musical fan-piece, created that the artist linked to in an earlier status update (posted before the return from hiatus)? If you haven't, I really do recommend it - it seems to me to fit very well with the feel of the comic: sweet, adventurous, but hinting at something deeper.
New page. And this is how tiny fish minions are useful in bringing down enormous metal-clad creatures.
I have a hard time figuring out what goes on in this comic. I mean the whole real or imaginary duplicity is great but it makes me feel like I'm still just in an introductory stage for the story. I'd say this is the kind of story that works its way up to small twists and now that I think about it maybe it's going to stay this way, no big revealtion in the end just pieces of info that the reader can piece together if they want, but any resolution may be small and not worry much about answering everything in the end. It takes some guts to try this in a webcomic format, since it's so much build up that goes against the small updates format and you can't even be sure if there WILL be ending.
Hmm... I could see that being the case, but my own intuition is that it's leading somewhere. I could see these two strands continuing to develop, coming together, and then leading to a conjoined final chapter or two after whatever revelation (or set thereof) joins them. For example, I could see the "real world" arc continuing to drop hints about Melanie, developing its mysteries and showing at last the shadow of a full revelation. Concurrent with this, we might follow Sola's story and find it leading at the end to her being shoved into another world. Thus at last the revelation that the girl is Sola, some further revelation that allows her to take action, followed by a final chapter that involves her facing whatever holds her in the "real world". (Of course, the actual events could be completely different; the form is what I'm primarily attempting to convey. The above is in line with my current guess (in particular that Melanie is Sola and Daniel Lune).)
New page. (It's a pity that the little pieces of text beside the front-page link to new pages don't seem to be available for archived pages; I almost linked to the front page in order that said text not be missed, but realised that doing so would leave the link pointing to the wrong place once the next page was posted. :/)
Another new page, and perhaps a new convolution... Is the boy drawing from memory, perhaps of stories told to him, rom imagination, or from some other source of inspiration? What does this mean for Sola's story...?
Avvie-free for life!
Haha. "Silence is golden." indeed.
New page. We get some more information about the setting, including the tidbit that the traders are apparently more interested in trading for jars than gold, and something in the boy's drawing surprises (perhaps shocks?) the Keeper. As to the text on the main page: If it hasn't been mentioned before, we learn the name of the nation/group/whatever that sent the golem-like creature, and, perhaps more importantly, that the powers of the Sun Child are waning, and that a new Sun Aspirant is expected to rise - and that the sequence drawn by the child might be seen as not merely a challenge, but treason...
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."
It seems that they may have an unseen visitor... (I recommend reading the front-page text for clarification.)
What's that thing in the last panel supposed to be? I figure it's the observer, but can't tell what it is supposed to look like.
From what I recall of the front-page text-sections (it really is a pity that those don't seem to be included in the page; does anyone know whether they're archived anywhere? :/) it seems to be implied to be something dead/undead. From the current-at-time-of-writing text-block:
Perhaps its purpose is not malevolence but mere observation. Sometimes the lost comes back to regain its bearing; the desert is full of lost things. And dead things too.
