Yes, it's real. Also unsure if this should go in Western Animation or comics.

Underground was my favorite of the three Sonic cartoons, so I can't wait to see what's in store.

Granted the show itself was too, so no real loss.

Isn't that the godawful Sonic show where he's got siblings and they fight with music???

...Dear god, why would anyone return to that.

Remember, this is Archie comics we're talking about. A comic company that hasn't meant anything for at least thirty years.

|I think the company one does about three comics, none of which would be misssed upon their disapperance.

Maybe it's like when your sister wakes you up by going downstairs to the piano and playing an annoying jingle, but doesn't play the last two notes, so you climb out of bed grumbling obscenities to do it yourself.

@maxwellelvis: It depends really. I think Ian is a lot better suited to writing light hearted stories than trying to make tight, dramatic ones. His work on Sonic X was better than the anime itself at points.

I've not seen much of Underground, though it seemed to be a lot more on the cheesy, comical side than Sat Am was, am I right?

That's...not really saying much.

Hell, you could be better than the anime by default just by deleting Chris.

Fucking Chris.

Underground was a mix of lighthearted and serious, with music and occasional 3-part story arcs. It also had Knuckles and Athair, from the comics.

[up][up][up]And yet he insists on writing drama.

[up][up][up]Sonic X did have other big problems aside from Chris, a bland Sonic, Knuckles' Designated Monkey status, the usually boring action scenes. I'll give credit that the comic got rid of most of those at least. It's not a work of art, but it's harmless light hearted stories that are executed well enough, compared to the mainstream comics pretentious attempts at drama and intensity that usually make me want to bang my head on the desk.

It also doesn't have the Freedom Fighters in it. Don't get me wrong, while I don't hate them, neither Ian, or almost writer outside the first season of Sonic Sat Am has managed to develop them well. Hopefully he might do a better job with the siblings.

Which is funny, because the games those lighthearted stories were based on were pretentious attempts at drama and intensity that are fully head-desk-worthy, whereas the original games that the current pretentious comics are based on were lighthearted fluff.

And at the center of the circle is Ken Penders with mismatched and bowed legs, man hands, bizarre eyelids that work like eyebrows, and a neverending hurricane of unwarranted self-importance.

Archie's Sonic comic. I really have slacked on getting back to that. I forgot to renew my subscription sometime after issue 207 or 221 or something and have been really slow to fill in the gap between now and then. Anything big I've missed there?

[up]Most of the Satam characters have been Put on a Bus. Sally is robotocized and now a prominant villain, Antoine got injured and is in a coma, Bunnie got derobotocized and has ran off to do...something that we still have no idea what while Snively has been left to rot in a prison egg by the doctor. Rotor is the only one having a prominant role by training some substitutes (including Big, Cream and a rebuilt Heavy and Bomb wink) but since he's as bland as always there's not much to say about it otherwise.

You also missed the Genesis arc, which was basically a one off reboot with the Satam crew in the early games universe (supposedly to wean you a little for their absence afterwards).

Most of this was kinda boring in execution though. I hope Ian can make the Underground cast much more vibrant than he did with Satam.

[up]What the f...

All I remember from the last issue I read was the introduction of the Iron Queen and Espio going off to be a ninja or something. Now all of THAT?!?? I...wow. Comics, amirite?

[up]For some reason it sounds a lot more dramatic being told it than reading it, though it may be just because I find the comic versions of the Freedom Fighters so bland I don't really find myself missing them.

Even the current stories are just somewhat repetitive battle scenes, likely because they rushed through these big plot points with so little emotional value they're just killing time till the next big millstone.

I actually always really enjoyed how they were characterized (for the most part), although it has been a couple years or so since I've read the comic, as I've mentioned, and I did start reading them (and somehow managed to amass nearly every single issue, including one or two of the miniseries and most if not all of the specials, though the spinoffs I don't have much of) up until the point where I stopped) about a decade ago, so maybe it's just nostalgia talking here.

I only really liked how they were written in Sonic Sat Am, and even then only really the first season before the heavy Flanderization and Spotlight Stealing kicked in, largely because the show managed to maintain a sense of drama and darkness while still giving the characters quirky and vibrant defining traits. In the comics, as the darker stories took off, they became more and more nuanced into generic action hero types and don't really seem to hold a story up well. Even in comical stories they feel like Everymen. One of my problems with the comics is they so rarely feel character driven, and more like pretentious twists and drama are completely driving the plot forward than how the cast behave, outside when they angst of course.

The Sonic X comic was ironically the opposite, bare bones plots that mostly just involved the wacky cast doing crazy stuff, though I can enjoy the former a lot more than the latter.

[up]Heh, you should see the first 20 or so issues of the StH comic. They're pretty much Sonic the Hedgehog: The Sitcom + a little bit of action. It's amazing to think about the huge tonal shift the series has taken. It's like comparing Sonic The Hedgehog with…erm, Sonic the Hedgehog.
