When have you invoked Fanon Discontinuity?

I don't disregard everything an author says, as I said, their interpretation is just as valid as my own, but if it doesn't make sense, or seems stupid, or contradicts the actual text, then I reserve the right to completely ignore them.

Eh, who cares if you interpret a story differently than the author? What does it matter? :/

I vowed, and so did you: Beyond this wall- we would make it through.

Oh, I just remembered, while I've never invoked Discontinuity, I have invoked Ruined FOREVER, though in this case it was less a question of disliking the content (which is still solid) as it is of ethics; the makers of Rune Scape violated their own principles to make a quick buck and in doing so negatively-impacted the game ("buy stuff from us!" updates get priority over new game content updates now), so I decided someone who would do that doesn't deserve my money and canceled my account there.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."

I tend to avoid the episode/manga chapter of Ah My Goddess with the goofy exorcist girl and Belldandy being jealous.

Princess Aurora is underrated, pass it on.

F.E.A.R. 3 didn't happen. At all. I blame Executive Meddling and issues in development (the game was juggled between developers), but still. I can be incredibly forgiving, too. I didn't hate Mass Effect 3's ending.

I assume it might make conversation about the work difficult if the author and everyone else is saying Moby-Dick is some natural and uncontrollable force and that one guy is saying, "No! It actually represents the Republic of Ireland!"

I think of it from the perspective of the author, in that I wouldn't want my work misrepresented, especially if it's for a purpose or position that I am against (e.g.: Bruce Springsteen vs. ultra-conservatives who want to use "Born in the U.S.A." to further their own agenda that is actually the polar opposite of what the song is talking about).

Making your own interpretations for fun or to make a point is all well and good, but not if it's completely contradictory to what a work's entire point is.

The creator has the right to say "Fuck no,that's not what I meant at all".

On Moby Dick, my idea (which I freely admit I swiped from a character in Eric Flint's 1632-verse) is that the eponymous whale is the hero, rather than that idiotic crew-killing fuckwit Ahab.

The clue is in the title of the book, people, 8-)

Kind of subverts all the anti-transcendentalist themes in the book if it's about Moby Dick though.

Possibly. The thing is, the book makes more sense to me as a story about the great white whale. I never liked Ahab. I found the risks he took with the lives of his men to be unforgivable, so I never really bought him as the hero, no matter how good Gregory Peck was in the role.

He's not supposed to be a hero. Heck, he doesn't even get to be the protagonist. Just the main character we follow. His whole nature is supposed to be self destructive and self defeating.

[up]Was gonna say this, but then I figured I probably don't have the authority to having not read the book and not being interested in reading it.

If Ahab wasn't meant to be the designated hero, why did Hollywood pick the very same man that played Atticus Finch to play him in the film, eh?

[up][up][up]The same reason they picked the guy who played Dr. Frasier Crane to be an Affably Evil prospector? Or the guy who played Conan The Barbarian to be The Terminator? Or just Gary Oldman, period?

Personally, Death of the Author gets complicated when the author changes his original intentions for the book. For example, Fahrenheit451.
