Name: Sumire Kanzaki
Source of character: Sakura Taisen
Physical Description: Gravity-defying kimono action!◊

moment. A little on the short side at 5'3", but still can boast a mature physique. Whatever the clothing she dons Sumire's chin length reddish hued brunette hair always has the same lavender headband decorating it. Similar to much of her clothing, her eyes appear at first glance to be purple as well. Always seen dressing in whatever is the most fashionable for a lady of wealth. In battle she dons a suit of purple battle armor with a green-tinted visor similar to this◊
Personality: Supremely confident in her own abilities - be they martial, social or anything else - Sumire easily comes off as arrogant and self-serving. She strongly believes that everyone else should hold themselves up to the same standards as herself; equalling her, in Sumire's mind, is nigh impossible. Despite her high-and-mighty attitude she actually does have empathy for others. Often it is expressed as tough love or veiled in what seems on the surface as a jab, insult or even indifference. Sumire can be very competitive at times when she feels a challenge has been issued. It's usually the case that no such challenge was ever even contemplated by the other party. This is mostly Sumire's determination to prove herself worthy of her own high self opinion.
Powers/Skills/Equipment: While a skilled martial artist (specializing in the Kanzaki family's naginata style) Sumire has no super powers per se. Instead she wields a good deal of 'reiryoku', or spirit energy, which is harnessed by specially designed combat armour. This armour utilizes its wearer's reiryoku to enhance physical strength and agility while also having a flight mode in the form of boot mounted rockets (more or less). The armour is designed to be very durable as well due to the type of more-than-human enemies its pilot goes up against. Included with the armor is a built-in computer system that includes GPS, limited radar, and a net feed that can be displayed in an HUD window. To best utilize her marital skill Sumire wields a complementary naginata when in armour. The weapon uses the same technology as the suit to channel reiryoku in supplement to its razor sharp blade.
Background: As in the canon Sumire grew up the daughter of the CEO of the Kanzaki Industries zaibatsu. Because her parents were always busy with work she was raised mostly by household staff and became self-reliant early on. She began learning to use a naginata at five and eventually was brought in to assist a new company project when her considerable reiryoku was discovered. The new project had discovered a way to harness it as an alternative energy source, but was very experimental. Together with a Chinese specialist Sumire personally helped test the original bulky prototypes of the 'spirit armour'. Sumire had a personal hand in developing the much more mobile personal armour system she now utilizes as well.
While originally intended for use by the JSDF, its cost and economic conditions in Japan ensured no large-scale production was undertaken. A small team was considered by the JSDF command but the search for other potential pilots drew out longer than was thought tolerable. For the forseeable future Sumire is the only pilot of a Kanzaki Industries spirit armour suit. It has been found Sumire needs to undertake creative activity to maintain her reiryoku; this is accomplished by the fact that she is something of an actress as a day job.
Changes from canon: only one spirit armour suit has been produced and is piloted, as opposed to the existance of an Imperial Combat Troupe. In addition, steam technology was changed to experimental modern technology and size of the armour shrunk to a personal level.
Include how the character's backstory has changed (if much) due to growing up in more-or-less mainstream Japan.
Why Sumire is being considered for the team: Despite her 'memorable' personality, Sumire is by all accounts a very competent fighter. Being highly motivated and determined to succeed in any situation also has attracted attention. Her ability to work on a team has been proven during the armour's development process and her acting career. Having access to the spirit armour technology also gives her a leg up, and perhaps even family connections to decision-makers?
