Hello, fellow tropers! Long-time lurker, first-time user. Here's the situation: we're trying to start a readers' theater here and we need some good dialogue to pull from. Add this to my personal mission to show that video games are more than senseless violence and you have why I'm here: what are some monologues and dialogue from video games we can use? I either need some transcripts or You Tube clips. Don't just say "that one scene from MGS". If you guys are helpful and this gets off the ground, I'll see about putting clips of the performances on You Tube.

Edit: ANY good dialogue. I'm looking for a good range of things. All contributions are appreciated!

Are you looking for emotional dialogue? Philosophical dialogue? Funny dialogue? Or just "good dialogue" in general?

Regardless of the answer, I've always thought the opening/closing monologue from the Fallout New Vegas DLC Dead Money was amazing. May not be as effective if you haven't played the DLC, but eh. Have a Youtube video and transcript.

Relevant part starts at around 3:40.

You've heard of the Sierra Madre casino. We all have, the legends, the curses. Some foolishness about it lying in the middle of a city of the dead, a city of ghosts, beneath a blood-red cloud. A bright, shining monument, reaching out, luring treasure hunters to their doom. A promise that you can change your fortunes, begin again. Finding it, though, that's not the hard part. It's letting go.

This has always been a personal favourite of mine. I don't know why, but there's just something about the lines, the way Raziel and Kain speak them and the overall mood of this scene which I just love. It's like it all just comes together to create something brilliant.

I guess we could go... wherever we please.

I said this when a similar topic came up on the forums, but I'd have to say that Kreia is easily one of the best written characters in a video game I've ever come across. She remains inscrutable at all times, making lies sound like truth and vice-versa. When she decides to deliver a tounge lashing, she really goes for it - and what's more, you end up agreeing with her by the end of it.

It was tough picking out one moment, as I could easily have said any scene with her involved. However, this particular moment (the same one I used in the previous thread, in fact!) still stands out to me, although it contains spoilers and cut content:

Here's an equivalent light side version, though again it contains spoilers and cut content. The woman herself only appears two minutes or so into it, but the context helps a lot.

You can probably find more quotes online, or on the page for KOTOR on this very wiki.

The ending for the Old World Blues DLC:

Starting at 9:50:

Doctor Mobius: There is an expression in the Wasteland: "Old World Blues."

Doctor Klein: It refers to those so obsessed with the past they can't see the present, much less the future, for what it is.

Doctor Dala: They stare into the what-was, eyes like pilot lights, guttering and spent, as the realities of their world continue on around them.

Doctor 0: Science is a long, steady progression into the future. What may seem a sudden event often isn't felt for years, even centuries, to come.

Doctor Mobius: In the times following the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, however, Old World Blues took on a new meaning.

Doctor Klein: Where once it was viewed as a form of sadness, nostalgia, it became an expression describing the potential for the future.

Doctor Dala: It can be easy to see Science as evil, technology unchecked as the source of all ills, all misfortunes.

The Courier's Brain: With the Courier at the helm, Science became a beacon for the future. There was Old World Blues, and New World Hope. And hope ruled the day at Big MT.

I'm tempted to say Portal2's dialogue for the tongue-in-cheek/irony in practically everything you hear the ([[Heroic Mime other) characters saying that makes the utterly absurd horrifying/tragic situations feel very light hearted, but I'm not sure if one sided dialogue (I'm pretty sure one sided dialogue isn't what a soliloquy/monologue is) actually counts for what you're looking for.

Holy Grail, huh? Cool story, bro.

Besides Portal 2, there's Spec Ops The Line, full of really good quotes like "You're here because you're trying to be something you're not: a hero."

I can't say much else, though, because of spoilers.

Kid Icarus: Uprising has a really good script. It has a huge quotes page, too.

I've always liked Star Fox 64's dialogue. It's Star Wars-ish in a way. You know everyone's roles when you hear them, but they ooze enough personality when they speak, and the way they hint at things makes you feel like you've known them for the longest time, despite this game only being one mission of theirs.

Good work so far, everyone!

Further clarification: Part of the idea is to show that video games aren't for the mindless, and that there are well-acted and well-written parts to some of them that people who write video games off as mere playthings are missing out on.

But there's room for fun stuff too! I'd love to do something with Phoenix Wright. Anyone have some really good cases for me to check out?

Oh, and I think it would work better if we had longer monologues/dialogues to work with. I liked some of the stuff from Kid Icarus, but a lot of it's brief exchanges. I know Metal Gear has some good long conversations. Does anyone know of somewhere that would have good transcripts of some of the best parts?

All of Metal gear Solid. All of them. They're full of amazing dialog. You kind of need to know the characters to really "get" it though. This one is more comedic and holds up on it's own though:

[up]Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! Kid Icarus Uprising has mainly a humourous cast, but any scene with Medusa will be some pretty heavy shit.

Um, guys? While I can't say whether or not Uprising has good dialogue since I haven't played or watched it on Youtube, perhaps you should find some examples.

Medusa: I find it very ironic that you would call yourself the "goddess of light". After all, it was you who turned me into a monster! It was you who hunted me down!
Palutena: Don't blame me for that. I only reflected in your appearance what I saw in your heart.
Medusa: And what about your heart? I can only imagine what resides there.
Palutena: Why imagine it? Don't you have the power to make it a reality?
Medusa: Why bother? We both know it would be some sort of hideous creature.
Pit: You shut your mouth, Medusa! Lady Palutena is nothing like you! Who turns people to stone and poisons the rivers? Who reduces cities to rubble? And who is leading the Underworld destruction of the land and heavens? Not Lady Palutena! You're the one responsible for all this, Medusa! But what I don't understand is how you managed to resurrect yourself in the first place!
Medusa: I suppose... I don't understand how that happened, either.
Pit: Don't play dumb with me, Medusa!
Medusa: I... I don't remember what happened! My memories aren't what they were.
Palutena: You're slipping, Medusa. Your mind isn't all there anymore. And I can sense your life force is weaker than it used to be. Twinbellows, Hewdraw, Pandora, and Thanatos have all been defeated. But if you withdraw your forces, and remain in this castle, I will spare you.
Medusa: Enough! It doesn't matter how I returned. What matters is why. To exact revenge on you. Turning your little angel into stone is a nice first step...
Pit: Threaten all you want, Medusa! You don't scare me. I will defeat you. I'll return to Skyworld victorious!

And...

Medusa: I can sense you getting closer, Pit!
Pit: There's nowhere left for you to run!
Medusa: Y'know, I'm very much looking forward to your arrival. I feel like Rapunzel waiting for her prince.
Pit: Sorry to break it to you, but those aren't exactly golden locks on your head.
Medusa: And you're not exactly a brave hero. Yet somehow, the thought of our confrontation fills me with anticipation. So hurry to me, Pit. I'll strip you of your wings and sever you from the heavens forever!

Keep 'em coming! Just a caveat: we're not physically acting these out and can't do much in the way of props, so we can't have someone fall off of something or get beat with a golf club. sad

Still looking for scenes from Metal Gear and Ace Attorney. I've found some transcripts for Metal Gear, but they're only parts of larger conversations. I found the script for Ace Attorney 1 and am wondering if there are any other cases to check out.
