As a reminder for everyone, the necessary actions are:

  • Claim a section, say a particular letter, so that you're not constantly tripping over someone else.
  • Correct any wicks that should point to The Gadfly or another trope.
  • Strip out any references to the types from the former Sliding Scale.
  • Add the example to the appropriate trope page (The Gadfly or Troll most likely). Keeping records in a .txt or similar file and adding a batch would be best, to avoid multiple people trying to edit at the same time.
  • If you come across a Zero Context Example, move it to the discussion page with a note that it can be added back as The Gadfly or Troll as appropriate so long as it has a good description and is also added on the corresponding trope page.
  • Post when you finish a section.

I think it would be better to move unclear examples to the discussion page rather than just delete them. That way, people more familiar with the work would be able to fix them.

Seriously, my avatar comes from the embodiment of the So Bad, It's Good trope.

The problem with that is that it slows down the effort. We've seen in other cleanups that they go best if you make the job easy.

I can try and do that, though.

E and F done.

I've found that if you delete an example with a good edit reason, people more familiar with the work will be sure to put it back with more detail rather than just putting it back as it was. People don't really pay attention to the discussion page unless you specifically say you've moved something there.

Just went through Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni and Umineko No Naku Koro Ni. Updated Shion's status as a gadfly ( normally and purged some of the remnant references to sliding scale of troll cruelty). I do want to discuss some potentially debatable examples with those aware of the works.

1. Lambdadelta. Very morally ambiguous and capricious. Is she a very dark gadfly or a low grade troll?

2. Takano. We find out in the 5th and 6th novels that she intentionally does things to drive people to madness ( Shion in the 5th, Rena in the 6th via document 34) not to mention having the Yaminu do mock hit and runs to further feed their paranoia as seen with Keiichi in the 1st and Rena in the 6th. The anime and I think the manga doesn't make it clear if this is part of her other plots or that she does this for kicks. Is there a TIP that clarifys this issue? Manipulative Bastard or Troll?

-Edit: Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, Kid Icarus Uprising, Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, Lucky Star, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Azumanga Daioh, School Days, and Naruto have been inspected. Glossed over the Disgaea series. We have one low grade example (about Lambadelta's level) and a borderline example between Manipulative Bastard and Troll (has been placed in the Characters Discussion section of Disgaea4).

First example is a troll. She's relatively nice, but when she's screwing with people it's not to be funny. I mean, she's nice relative to someone completely awful, after all.

Second example is probably also troll because it has nothing to do with her actual goals. In the future you should probably leave such questions in the discussion pages, though.

I think we may have a potential problem with the page regarding misuse. This is not from lack of knowledge of difference, but rather on what to do regarding characters who "blur the line". i.e. characters who either blur the line between The Gad Fly and Troll (typically these characters are very morally ambiguous sorts who are either dark gadflies or low grade trolls) or who blur the line between Manipulative Bastard and Troll (this one is arguably much harder to ajudicate properly as there is valid argument for either way). Going to post a topic on this on the Troll discussion page to specifically deal with this issue.

I suspect I may be guilty of this on occasion.

The Sekrit namespace is one the Fast One occasionally uses for admin side projects. We can safely ignore it.
