Misused: Troll get usage counts

As a reminder for everyone, the necessary actions are:
  • Claim a section, say a particular letter, so that you're not constantly tripping over someone else.
  • Correct any wicks that should point to The Gadfly or another trope.
  • Strip out any references to the types from the former Sliding Scale.
  • Add the example to the appropriate trope page (The Gadfly or Troll most likely). Keeping records in a .txt or similar file and adding a batch would be best, to avoid multiple people trying to edit at the same time.
  • If you come across a Zero-Context Example, move it to the discussion page with a note that it can be added back as The Gadfly or Troll as appropriate so long as it has a good description and is also added on the corresponding trope page.
  • Post when you finish a section.

There are a couple of empty folders. What's up with that?

On the sandbox? I don't know, I simply assumed we'd be moving the new description in to replace the old one while leaving the examples.

That works for me. Should we just ask in the Edit Request For Locked Pages Thread?

I suppose we could. Ironeye agreed to unlocking the article for a test run as well.

Let's do it. Article should be unlocked by the time you read this. I'll copy over the new description.
I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

Alright, our next steps:
  • Move over any examples from the sandbox that aren't already on the page.
  • Check to the wicks to make sure they're appropriate for the new description
  • Tweak the description on The Gadfly and Manipulative Bastard as necessary to match the new definition.
I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.
What about the current examples on Troll?

Hmmm, subtrope for Internet Troll? Otherwise, minor rewrites to emphasize the personality traits.

The folders in the sand box would be mine. I thought we were going to port over examples from the original page (the ones that fit the new description anyway) into the new one before doing the final update. Those folders are there for future preparations accounting for any possible medium with examples just in case the page gets very large (i.e. having the contingencies already in place to head off any problems in advance if you will).

From what I see with the old troll page, there are several examples that are more appropriately under visual novels, and a few more correctly under The Gad Fly. Going to be dealing with those soon.

-Edit: Cut Petula on grounds that she is a gad fly not a troll. Did a lot of port work. Depending on which direction the porting is, much should be ready to go. Haven't touched some examples since I can't make a proper judgement call on them.

This is 1984 wicks. How many people are willing to help?

Also, The Gadfly is poorly distinguished from Troll in examples.

With respect of the trope distinctions, do we agree on X's goal being:

Agreed.

Edit: Just axed some examples that are more accurately called troll (Izaya).

I'm a bit busy until this weekend, but then I'll be able to help in a more significant capacity.

I'll start tomorrow unless something intervenes (like possibly Asian Gal with White Guy)

I'll take A, then.

Took A, but with a combined cleanup + crosswicking effort we'll need more hands working here.

Also, what is a txt. file?

edited 18th Jan '13 4:39:07 AM by SeptimusHeap

.txt is just a word processing file that doesn't allow formatting. It's good for copying text into or out of wiki pages. But .doc and .rtf work too, as long as you don't let the program macro something.

I'll get C.

Edit: Yeah... It's being used a ton as fanspeak. Is this really a problem that's going to go away with time?

Edit 2: Done, but I am really not very confident with the job I did. It's hard to tell what's a proper example, what should go on The Gadfly, what is flat misuse or Trolling Creator or Manipulative Bastard or whatever.

My own conjecture is that since we are on the Internet here, most editors will have "maliciousness" in mind when they say "troll".

Plenty of examples didn't. Some did, but just as many talked about how funny it was. The Homestuck trolls had their species potholed, wrestlers who played the heel had it listed, there was significant usage flat out wrong (such as Alfred from Batman) and more. People are potholing to troll for everything.

I think that this is a case for an "delete anything that doesn't fit either Troll or The Gadfly" approach.

Indeed. Wipe anything that isn't clearly an example of The Gadfly, Troll, or Manipulative Bastard.

Looking at Skyfall: What about someone who is a Manipulative Bastard, but loves to mock those has lead on? I would think he still qualifies, as his manipulation has a goal but he still shows malice, and it's part of his character. (Whereas Kyubey, for instance, is never shown to enjoy what he does, furthering his lack of human emotions.)
