Basically, it's a cellular automaton with square "cells" in a grid, determined by rather small a set of rules. Cells with fewer than two live neighbours die, those with to or three persist to the next cycle, those with more die and dead cells with three live neighbours are revived. The right starting patterns can yield very interesting results.
