Why does MS not let you play downloaded games if you're not online?

I don't remember it being like this always either? But say you buy and download a game off XBLA. It works and is great, but next day, let's say you're unable to go online, like your internet is down or something. Well guess what? You can't play the game you downloaded. Just the trial. It's like you're not even buying it anymore, simply a pass to play the full thing. But if you're not online, SORRY, can't play anymore. Or you can, but it's a trial and not what you paid for.

It's been like this for a while(though I don't think it was always, maybe I'm wrong) and it's infuriating to say the least, I paid for it so why the hell should I have to keep paying just to play it? What if I no longer wanted LIVE but still wanted the full game I already paid for? The way it is now, you can't.

Hmm.
Its been a long while since I connected to the internet via my 360, but my Shadow Complex and Symphony of the Night work just fine without online influence.

Yeah, I'm perfectly capable of playing Walking Dead or Splosion Man offline.

Did you transfer any of the games to a new console? Because if you don't transfer the licenses as well, that can stop you playing offline.

Yeah, it's the licenses.

I transferred my profile to a USB drive and brought it over to my buddies', and I could play all his XBLA games fine. Could even earn achievements. Long as I was online. Likewise, he could play all mine. But if we where offline, I could only play mine and he could only play his.

I think it works pretty well honestly. They actually describe the process in a little tooltip before you download something, and it's not legal technobabble!

As for WHY, probably an anti-piracy thing.

Yeah my old 360 burnt out(whose hasn't though lolololol), didn't know about the license thing. How would one even do that? Is it too late for me now?

That kind of sucks :/ 360s were notorious for breaking down so the fact they did this seems kind of well...like seriously? You make a shoddy hardware console and then make it even more difficult for me to replace it effectively?

Raaaaaage.

It's never too late to transfer licenses. Just go to Settings, pick Account, then Billing, then License Transfer. The re-downloading thing can vary- I didn't have to, but then again I also did a hard drive transfer >_>
