Yeah, I'm having not so much one of those emo moments I'm notorious for having, where I freak out over something that doesn't matter, but I'm instead freaking out over something that people have thought matters since the invention of photography.

I was at a comic book convention, Supernova, where I met Joe Kubert where while he signed a graphic novel I liked the look of that he did, gave me advice on whether I should go to art school or not. I told him the gist of why they accepted me in, that I wrote a book in high school and illustrated it and that's why I was given a shot at admission, and he told me to go for it. He let me take a photo of him signing a comic, and round about the time I found out Joe Kubert up and died, I rediscovered the photograph on my hard drive with barely any degradation of the image to speak of, as if it had never been copied at all. And that much was true, unlike other photographs I'd made and used back in my JPG only budget camera days, this one was pristine because no other copies of it existed on my hard drive.

It was like it was brand new, and it's been creeping me out. I loved the comic I got him to sign, and wouldn't want to sell it for any amount of money right now because you know what happened when Michael Jackson died, profiteers show up and mark up the merch and it just feels wrong. Me, I'm keeping that graphic novel, and I'm keeping this photograph.

But on one condition. If Joe Kubert's family want me to upload it via Creative Commons to Wikipedia or something, I feel instead of selling the copyright to the photograph, it would belong to anybody who wanted to know what Joe Kubert looked like in his twilight years. Wikipedia is where I think this sort of dead celebrity photo belongs, not hoarded away on some autistic nerd's hard drive where it only survived because of his backing up data obsession so nothing's lost.

I'll upload the thing to Tumblr soon enough, if anybody wants to see it. There's dignity in that shot I took, I can tell you that. It's the image of a man in his element. No decline in a hospital bed, no decay of mind or ability to do what he loved. He just looks like he would have looked as his usual old man self. And it's kinda making me misty eyed that a lot of comic nerds would have killed to have shook his hand like I did yet they never got the chance.

What to do?

I think your plan sounds absolutely wonderful.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.
