"Become a Knight. Save your people. Save your worlds."

Where they were nobody knew. Who they were nobody knew either. Not one person present recognized anyone else. But here they were, together they were, fighting.

It was a land like no other. An asteroid? Were they on a giant rock in space? Where where the star? The pitch black was everywhere above and around, suffocating in its absoluteness. Only the rocky ground differed from the rest of the surroundings.

Who were these people? Everyone saw themselves fighting alongside others. Dressed in strange clothes. A cloak? An plate of armor? Leather boots? And what they fought with! Swords and bow! Axes and spears! A woman ran her blade into a reptilian monster towering over her. A man smashed an axe into a giant slug creature. Someone shot lighting from their fingers. Another hurled balls of fire at flying monsters.

"Knights."

Though they had never actually seen them before. Everyone knew what they were fighting. They'd felt their presence, saw shadows in the corner of their eyes, seen them in dark dreams.

"Nightmares."

A sudden light. A doorway at the end of space, huge and intimating. The outlines of eleven people, if they could truly be called that stood on the other side.

"True Enemy"

The Nightmares and monsters defeated. Everyone paused. Hesitant, but only for a moment. Charge! Onward they went. Towards the door to the light and towards the True Enemy.

The scene changed. A city? And abandon city? Dark and decrepit. Lifeless. But something was there. Going about the city, past its suburbs, into the forest. A cave.

"Become a Knight. Save your people. Save your worlds."

Abandon City of Cerritos
Planet Saffron
September 23, 0031 NY (Nightmare Years)

Cerritos was going to be the next boom town. It was situated right on the river and onto the rocky hills nearby, far off from the original settlements. It's planners had dreamed of it as being the heart of the next set of cities on the continent. With its large hydroelectric dams powering everything with airports and riverboats taking people and products every which way.

Nobody had lived there in over 20 years. What had been the great frontier city of Cerritos was now a ghost town. Homes were empty, vehicles left on the streets, holographic displays that somehow still worked flickered and advertised products from decades ago. A lone cleaning robot struggled in vain to keep the streets clean. Without a human presence, nature was reclaiming the land.

Though "Nature" was probably not the right word. The black, thorned, flowers everyone knew to avoid or destroy appeared on every street. Other plants where nowhere to be seen. Without people, animal noises should have been plentiful but not a sound could be heard for miles in this area.

At least, not until a few minutes ago, when a select group of individuals from across the Baritone Solar System made their way either in vehicle or on foot to this godforsaken area of Saffron. All arriving at roughly the same time. Following the same dream.

Nearly soundlessly, a lean dark hoverbike approached Cerritos at incredible speed, the flying vehicle moving just a few feet off the ground as its driver looked at her goal through the enhanced sensors in her helmet.

It was a foolish trip, she knew. She had better things to do than to chase dreams like these, she knew. But still... hope drove her forward.

Become a Knight

It seemed so foolish whenever she thought about it seriously... like when she gave the reason for her visit of Saffron on the star port, when she asked around for the ruined city, as she bought the items she would need for her little excursion. From a logical point it was pure madness.

However, as she walked the streets of the city... as she let her min rest and allowed herself to simply go with what felt right... Then this was the only course of action that made any sense. Reason had not helped her, her family, or humanity so far. All she had left now was hope. Hope... and a dream.

Become a Knight

Abandoned City of Cerritos Planet Saffron September 23, 0031 NY Now

Jane parked her hoverbike on a little, dark, abandoned plaza... taking helmet off, shaking her head to let free her hair, for a single second to inspect her surrounding with her very own eyes. What she saw promptly made her reconsider her course of action.

No life but for technological ghosts and the fell black flowers which brought nothing but ruin and despair. Jane promptly put on her helmet again, glad at once for the protective gear she had brought for the occasion. Hard boots with sturdy leggings tucked into them, a tight fitting top covered with a protective vest made of a light, but surprisingly strong material. Over that she wore a long coat, a duster, made of strong fibers to wear as extra protection. Furthermore, renting the hoverbike had given her excuse to get the knee and elbow guards, gloves as well as her useful sturdy visor helmet. To finish the outfit she had a scarf to protect her neck. All of them colored grayish tones of brown or green except for her midnight black helmet.

On it she checked the general map of the Abandoned City which she had bought back in town, using it to plan her route through this ghost town. She didn't know exactly where the building from her dream would be... thus she would need a high vantage point to find the correct place. Jane could use her bike for recognizance of course... but in such a place, one so filled with shadows she would rather walk on her own two feet, looking for any danger that might come before her and her goal. Flying at high speed might make her miss something important... or it might rouse something best left slumbering. One never knew what could happen outside the cities protected by barriers. And should the worst come to pass, she could signal her bike to come as quickly as possible for her.

She carried in many pouches the necessary supplies to survive outside for a few days, some first aid items and on her wrist and helmet she carried the electronic utilities that were indispensable for a human of her time.

For her protection she carried a dependable side-arm pistol and an adaptable hunting rifle slung on her shoulder with a strap.

Thus, taking a deep breath for confidence, Jane started her travel through the ghost town of Cerritos.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

Whoever that that on her home planet, she would have a dream like this? In truth, all she wanted to do now was find her father. He had been gone for so long, disappearing without a trace. Could he have become lost? Could he have succumbed to the Nightmares? No, he was strong, there's no way something like that would ever happen to Sophie's father.

The tired girl continued her walk forward as she finally arrived at the city. She set her bag down as she wiped the sweat off her brow. Traveling was hard work, maybe her father died traveling? Could be a possibility, Sophie thought. What is with this, anyway? Doesn't make much sense for me to be here if I think about it., these kind of thoughts just kept coming up.

Is this even convenient?, she wanted to complain about her legs but more pressing matters were at hand. Mainly why she came all of the way here.

''Best to forget about it and keep going.", the girl picked her bag up and walked through the abandoned streets of the City of Cerritos. There were cars, holograms still working, sidewalks. This place was perfectly livable, so why wasn't anyone living here? The question fell on deaf ears, even in he rown head as she ignored it.

"HEY, anyone around?" she felt stupid for yelling. The city was abandoned, of course no one would be around. "HELLO!"

Driving through a landscape cowered by rocks and small hills in a small, lent hover-car, Adam sighed for what felt like a thousandth time, and for thousandth time asked himself what was he doing here. He spend almost a whole day, trying to secure some kind of transportation in the last city, while everyone he spoke to looked at him like he was insane. Well, he had to admit that it was likely - and he didn't even mentioned those dreams to them. In the end, he secured a small hover-car which looked even worse than he did. Its owner doubtlessly counted on never seeing him or his car again, and was fine with it. He sighed for thousand and first time. As the city of his dreams loomed closer, he was not sure what he was afraid of more: that he would find nothing there and he was simply another nutcase, or that the dreams were true and... something waited for him there. But what? An armor? An ax? He shook his head. No. He was simply insane. Everything would be easier that way.

Soon he arrived to the „prophesied“ city. To put it simply, it was a ruin. The derelict street were littered with a metallic trash, and anything that still seemed to work, was malfunctioning heavily. On a second thought, it is kinda fitting for me. Derelict city for a derelict man He laughed for himself, while his hand brushed over his face. His five-o’clock shadow had somehow transformed into full-blown, unkempt beard when he was not paying attention. He smirked humorlessly and turned off the engines. The hover-car let out a few alarming sounds that either meant that it was safely turned off or that its engine had broken down and it was minutes from exploding. He hastily got out of the car and looked around.

Of course, the cursed dark flowers were blooming everywhere. Adam cursed under his breath. He was wearing a touristic, ankle high boots, trousers and a shirt, all covered by his trusty, reinforced duster. All of them looked like they had a few better years. Or centuries. Outside of that, he had few random items in a various pockets. And a gun of course. These times, he was taking his gun even to the showers. It was a military side-grade, powerful enough to kill even things bigger than a man with one well-aimed shot. And unlike everything else about him, it was in pristine condition. He might be not taking a proper care of himself, but he was an idiot. Even so, he was still hardly equipped to trek through an abandoned city covered with Dark Hearts. But he had not come from such a distance to simply turn back, just because he lacked proper equipment. Insane, delusional and suicidal! Adam thought with grim amusement, while he ventured deeper into the city.

Cosmo was making his way to the city by bike. Not a hoverbike, or even a motorbike, but a standard steel bicycle. It wasn't flashy, but it beat walking by a mile - many miles, in fact. Plus, it was cheap, which for someone without a lot of extra money, was perfect. He was wearing what he usually wore - a plain pair of canvas cargo pants, a white T-shirt, his work boots, and a ball cap. He had a backpack stuffed with all the supplies he thought he'd need for a couple days out, plus an extra set of clothes. Jutting out of the top zipper was a crowbar he had brought from home for protection.

"Magic cave, " he said to himself. "Come on, magic cave." The dream had clearly shown him a cave, so he was hoping it would be easy to find it.

He passed a hoverbike. "Huh, " he said. Looks like someone else was here, but where were they? He kept on pedaling. A short while later he heard a woman's voice calling out. He couldn't see her, of course, but it also didn't seem to be coming from too far away. He slowed down, and then stopped the bike. "Heh, uh, let's see, erm.... I'M HERE." he replied.

Cerritos.

The town that ghost stories were written about. Many a tale had been twisted about in his own town. Ranging from the believable, how even in the shadows, the ghosts of murderers past haunted the streets. To the slightly less believable, how the biggest Nightmare in the entire sector could be found here, ready to pounce and eat whoever was foolish enough to show up here.

Oh, what am I doing here?

Byron had been asking himself that the entire trip. Something pulled him out here, something grasped at his mind and told him, come, come to me, we have so much to show you, if you just follow the sound of my voice...

People would say Byron was stupid for following this mentality, but when you grew up with Byron, you knew you were stating the obvious. The hardest part about this was leaving his little sisters and brother in the care of his best friend back on Saffron. He didn't wanna go, but...it was just too strong a pull. So, here he was, in the outskirts of the Ghost Town, Cerritos.

He was a big guy, intimidatingly so, but even then he felt some fear going into a nightmare infested place like this. His hair was shaggy and brown, hanging in front of his eyes like a curtain sometimes. His attire consisting solely of a simple cloth shirt and pants. Nothing fancy, but it fit him well. His face curled in a concentrated scowl, his eyes narrowed.

Was he doing the right thing?

Only one way to find out.

Taking a deep breath and steeling himself, he walked into the town.

She heard someone's voice in the distance. It was that of a human male, although she couldn't tell his age just by his yelling. "Hello?" she called out again, looking through the streets to try to find the individual. She sighed in self-dejection, letting her travel bag fall to the ground. "HELLO!" she called again.

Not going to find them.

Sophe picked her back up again and just ran for it. "HELLO, anyone here?" finally, finally that person came into view! What she saw was a man with a tan. He was muscular with short, black hair. In contract to Sophie's own average height, this was quite the find. "Hello there!" she said with a smile and a wave. "What's your name? I'm Sophie Roberts." the lass said, quick to introduce herself.

Adam blinked. He was sure he heard voices. In the city, not in his head. So he was not alone in here after all! With haste, Adam unholstered his gun, and began to sneak to their source. He was not going to risk anything, especially not when there were literally bushes of Dark Hearts growing all over the place. Aaand there they were! A huge, muscular man and a girl. They both looked normal, so he tucked the gun back in its holster, before he straightened and walked out of his hiding place. Oh gods, I need a shave… He thought absentmindedly as he approached them.

"Hey there! Who are you two? And what are you doing here?"

Jerome let the lonely wind whip past his face as he strode toward the city limits. It was an all too familiar sensation - both his home in the mountains of Seralon and the aftermath of a battle were home to such winds and his thoughts. He wondered briefly why he had come out here, to an abandoned city at the behest of a confusing, multifaceted dream. What did it all mean, and why did he, at the close of his life, get to view it? He held on to the idea that the chance for enlightenment and to stop the Nightmares and Dark Hearts had come. In his most recent darkest days it occasionally felt like it was all that kept him going.

It had not taken long to pack his worldly possessions, for they were few in number. An old man like himself - especially a recluse - had little need for the material. Unlike many of the others who headed for Cerritos, Jerome had hiked - he was used to strenuous activity, and he had felt that a vehicle would have been too conspicuous. Why he felt the need for secrecy, he did not know. Perhaps he was worried someone would follow him and get caught up in a dangerous situation.

His expression hardened as he noticed the malignant plants threading through the abandoned streets. Were they behind the current state of the city? Once it would have been bustling, but now... Jerome shook his head. He would need to be careful here, as his clothes did little more than protect him from the elements. Slowly, he made his way through the streets, hoping to find what he had been looking for.

Sophie Roberts — With Cosmo and Adam, Abandoned City of Cerritos

"I actually had a dream and stuff." talk about a simplistic answer if there ever was one. "I'm also looking for my father, even though..." she said, knowing the chances of finding that man were low. Despite her cynical outlook, she still had hope. A rather big contradiction from her head to her heart, not one easily overcome either. Sophie's head turned in the direction of a second newcomer. "Oh, hello there. I'm Sophie Roberts, seventeen years old. Who are you?" she said so with a smile.

An old man out of nowhere? That's always a good sign..., she thought to herself, putting on a fake smile.

Jerome looked over the strangers - what were they doing here? Granted, the dream showed him multiple people, rather than him alone, but that did nothing to soften the surprise. It quickly gave way to concern, however. If they didn't watch themselves, they might fall prey to the plants that seemed to infest the city. "Greetings! You can call me Jerome Perrault."

The old man almost seemed to stroll toward Sophie, as though he were doing nothing more dangerous than taking a walk in the park. "Forgive me for prying, but what're you and your friend doing here? This place seems a little dangerous to go exploring without a reason."

A spark of a thought raced through him. Perhaps they were some of the people he saw in his dream? It was a fascinating possibility, but he could not jump to conclusions. Real life was not a story, mysterious dreams or no. But then again, truth was often stranger than fiction.

"HEY, anyone around? HELLO!"

Sophie's voiced echoed loud and clear across the abandon city. Besides Adam and Cosmo, everyone in the city could hear the girl's shout. Everyone and everything. The weather had not been very lively to begin with, still cloudy in the middle of the day, but without warning the sky grew much darker. Street lights that still worked flickered on, thinking it was night. By all appearance a heavy rain storm could begin at any second. The Dark Hearts rustled despite no wind to move them.

Of greater concern to the adventurers was the unnatural chill that caused everyone no matter what they were wearing to shiver. Out of the corner of their eyes, they could make out figures. Inhuman outlines slowly making their way towards them. Attempting to look at them directly was useless as they disappeared almost immediately.

Something pushed at Jane's back.

The Dark Hearts near Byron suddenly came to life. Thorns shot from the plants in his direction.

If Jerome's hearing had not got worse with age he might have heard something like snickering above him. If he followed that laughter upwards then he would also notice the streetlight was about to fall on him.

Adam had not finished crossing the distance to Sophie and Cosmo before the ground below them began shaking. The concrete split and was shoved upwards. Fissures divided the two from Adam. Waterlines from below broke and gushers erupted onto the surface. When the freak disaster ceased, out of the corner of their eyes, the three could make out Nightmares approaching.

No dream this time. For an instant everyone had the same vision. The cave. A glow from inside. There was directions. The Plaza. Go to the plaza. Follow the river that ran down the center. Into the forest. Into the cave.

Finally, after going up many flights of stairs, climbing through a broken down wall and then up a ladder, Jane sat down on the highest vantage point she could find in the area. She allowed herself a moment to take off her helmet, drink some water from her reserves and then took a look around her surroundings.

Lifting her rifle she looked down the scope as if it were a telescope to check places of interest at different zoom levels. However, before she glanced at the scenery she saw on her dreams she spotted something else of interest.

Some distance away... movement. Zooming as far as her digital scope would allow her she took sight of a group of people... And quite a disparate group they were. No uniforms, so they were not part of the military or law enforcement... or at least they didn't seem that way. Furthermore their outfits were not alike in either look or function...

Jane remember what brought her here... how in her dreams she was not alone, could this be other people who had similar dreams? Possible, maybe even likely.

However, at the moment Jane knew nothing of them... could be a secretive group out for a meeting in a deserted place. For now Jane decided to stay still and keep observing them.

His instincts took over, and Adam rolled behind a cover of a crashed hover car, gun already in his hand, before he even realized what was happening. He cursed. Nightmares were approaching. What the hell he could…

The cave. A glow from inside. The there was direction. The Plaza. Go to the plaza. Follow the river that ran down the center. Into the forest. Into the cave.

Ah.... He blinked. He had to go to the plaza - He was following the dreams until now, he was not going to turn his back, when they changed into visions. But.. He could hardly leave two strangers at the mercy of the Nightmares. Taking a deep breath he rolled out of cover and popped two shots in the direction of strange, indistinct shapes. He was yelling too.

"Here you bastards! Come and get me!!!"

He was not trying to hurt them, of course, merely grabbing their attention and distracting them from the girl and a huge man. He didn't wait to see how successful he was - so or so, now was the right time to run away . With a frantic speed, he turned away, and began his furious escape through the derelict streets. There somewhere, in front of him was the plaza. And there...a forest? And....a cave?. He just hoped there was something there that could help him against Nightmares.

The entirety of the conversation had been cut short by the sudden disaster that occured. "W-what the?" she saw the vision. The plaza, the river, into the forest and then a cavern. A light? To the plaza.

His voice came out in a loud shout that echoed around him, endlessly. Thankfully his instincts from all of his training kicked in and he dove onto his stomach, heading the thorns whistling above him in loud, shrill whistles. If those had hit him...well, his adventure would be well over before it started eh?

Great, that meant the Nightmares were coming. A good as fighter as he was, there was no way he was gonna handle those with his own bare hands. He glanced around to see if there was something he could use as a make shift weapon, but alas. Not even the big, heavy blunt things he liked.

Something told him about the Plaza. The plaza would help. So, steeling himself and taking a deep breath, he rose to his feet and quickly ran down the path, his heavy feet stomping on the concrete and shadow plants below his heels. Whatever was there would help him.

Out of the corner of his eye...did he see people?

Well... that was weird thought Cosmo. And then he noticed the girl running away. He started pedaling again to catch up with her, and shouted when he got near, "Hey! What do you mean dream? Like with caves?"

He supposed that if one person was going to get a crazy magical dream telling them to go to some cave in a ghost town, then maybe the dream wasn't picky and presented itself to multiple people.

Jerome let a frown develop as he saw the changing conditions; he had never seen the weather change that quickly in all his years. Something was up, a suspicion encouraged by the unnatural chill that seeped into his bones.

The hermit's features lit up with alarm as he heard the snickering and traced it back to the source. With a grunt of exertion, the old man dived away from the falling lamp post, wincing as he scraped across the ground (and luckily avoided blundering right into any danger). Getting up and checking himself over, he thanked his lucky stars that he had been alert enough to recognise the danger. Such feelings were short lived, however, as a vision flashed before his eyes.

A cave in a forest... Jerome shook his head to clear it. First thing was first - he had to get to the plaza. Running as fast as his aged body could carry him, Jerome headed straight for the plaza, noting that the others were heading in the same direction. How strange.

Cerritos Plaza

The Nightmares were acting in concert. Unusual for them, the monsters rarely went out of their way to group together deliberately - a person was just unlucky if he happened to wander into a place where a lot of them were.

Those who made it to the plaza would find that it was in the center of the city, separated into two halves by the river. Three bridges spanned the water, the center one of them having collapsed. Stands and stalls that would have been selling goods were vacant, nothing save expired food and out-dated junk sat on the shelves. Where trees and gardens would have been to beautify the city's center were now empty plots of dry and cracked ground or Dark Hearts growing like weeds.

There were people already there. Two people actually. One looked like he had only recently arrived, clean pants and a large bright orange overcoat that stuck out like a sore thumb in the dreary surroundings. The other was carrying a short knife and clearly had been in the city for a while. Faded and torn clothing were his garments. His face was unshaven and dirt and grim covered his skin.

Unprotected skin. Anyone coming into the plaza (or looking through a scope) could see the second man had green tendrils growing out of his body, vines wrapped around his limbs, thorns latching into him. Out of the back of his neck grew a large black flower.

Getting closer, those coming into the plaza could hear the two conversing. "Hey, man, can't we take this out?" The orange clothed man was backing away from the Dark Heart host slowly, his arms raised in surrender.

"No Knights. Only Nightmares. No Knights. Only Nightmares!" the Dark Heart man shouted before swinging at the other with his blade. Orange Coat jumped away, only to stumble when he landed. He screamed in pain as his left leg gave out from under him. Blood soaked his pant leg. Something had bit him. Behind him, something invisible snickered with terrible amusement.

"Help!" he shouted, not knowing if anyone would even be nearby. "Help me!"

The Dark Heart host pounced on him.

"Huh? Yeah, how did you know!?" Sophe yelled at the top of her lungs before she finally came to the plaza. A man in an orange coat being attacked by a Dark Heart. The two were having a conversation then, all of a sudden, he had been attacked. Sophe clenched her eyes in pain as she ran as fast as she could.

Keep running Sophie, keep running! Don't stop, don't stop! her lungs burned as she forced her body into overdrive. Each breath singed, each breath brought about pain. She had to keep running! Her eyes traced along to find the river that ran down the center.

"FOLLOW ME!" she shouted to Cosmo. If she was right, it led into the forest and into a cave, just as the dream had dictated.

Adam slowly jogged onto the plaza. He intended to take the long way around, to lose any Nightmares that were following him, but soon realized that they ignored him and simply used the most direct route. Despite running most of the way, he was not even breathing heavily. Scruffy exterior or not, he was still in top form. He had to be, to serve as a law enforcer in such times.

Upon arriving in plaza he saw…a guy in orange coat being assaulted by a Dark Heart host. And passing him by were the two people he met earlier. Well, the good news were that they survived, and the bad news that they probably brought the whole host of Nightmares their way. Despite that, there was no way he would not help that guy.

Crouching, he took a careful aim, and took a single shot, intending to hit the Dark Heart host mid-plunge.

The Maid
Jane saw the chaos unleashed on the whole city, felt a chill going down her spine as the darkness started to spread through the city. Still, there was hope as she saw another vision, of a plaza where they could escape. She was further comforted by seeing how all the others who had come to this city seemed to have the same idea and started running towards it.

Still, she couldn't run just yet. Her sense of duty wouldn't let her just yet. She looked down her scope once more and then started shooting at anythinv she could see that was not human. Her last shot was aimed straight at the head of the of the man who was attacking the person in the lorange coat. After giving all of her coverage fire she shifted her rifle into a shotgun-like short range mode and then tried to make her way down the building, jumping down the broken flight of stairs and then running with all her strength knowing her sniping would have drawn a lot of attention.
If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.
