Soo, after finishing Barrayar yesterday, I was a bit...uncertain about the coming POV change from Cordelia to Miles.

9% into the The Young Miles Omnibus, he has me cheering in his corner :)

[up]Yup. The wee hyperactive short ass is a very engaging character isn't he? I don't think he really knows what limits are. (edited to add "Yet!")

Exemplified when he steals his first horse, mere days after getting his body casts off. Good job it was his grandpaws, eh?grin

[up][up]I don't like Piotr. But I can understand him. This scares me more than I would like to admit to. I love Aral and Cordelia. It is a great pity that the old man is dead now. I just hope that Miles can learn to be happy again. Not that his wife Ekaterin is the kind of woman who would put up with him wallowing too long in his grief. Cordelia also needs someone in her life, not as a replacement for Aral, but as a chance for further happiness.

[up]Finished yet? :P

I am wondering how long the time-skip between the end of Cryoburn and the beginning of the next novel in the series is going to be? I would love to see the new Count Vorkosigan being driven out of his post father's death induced lethargy *if any* by a rumbunctious load of kids. [down] If you mean Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, I have already read it. At least twice, 8-)

For those not into buying e-arcs, the final version of Captain Vorpatril's Alliance is now available for purchase as an ebook.

Any significant differences, I wonder?

^ Other than fixing typos and grammar issues (all minor, what little I can recall of the preview chapters, which are always from the e-arc version even if there is a final release available; don't ask me why, I dunno), not so far in my read from the beginning (instead of skipping the teaser chapters as "read them already").

Ethan of Athos read. Labyrinths next :)

I wonder if there is a Spear Counterpart for Athos somewhere...And if yes, how'd it played out of they met...

Ehm. Yes I do. oops.

In other news....the E-Arc for the next Honor Harrington is out (didn't seet it until now)...haven't started the next Vorkosigan yet so I'm kinda torn if I should read Shadow of Freedom first and then resume my Vorkosigan readup (until the next scheduled break for Cold Days)

hmm ^^

Weber's jumped the shark with Harrington, while Bujold is still hitting hard.

Weber's problem is that he's never allowed Harrington to grow as a person, even though he's been realistic about a career progression. So now you have a boring character — too senior now to see much action, yet not sophisticated enough to function as a politician. Ain't much in the way of good story to come from that.

Two problems: Weber's only good at the military stuff, not the political stuff (it's embarrassingly bad for anyone who's not a blinkered Republican), and Harrington's too much the Author's Pet.

Both flaws Bujold doesn't allow herself.

YMMV on that, i still enjoy them. *shrugs*

And just for the record, a "blinkering republican" I am not....

I just have different tastes than you, so how abot we're respectfull about that to each other and not restart the off topic discussion from a few pages back.

[up][up][up]Thing is societies composed only of women have been done a lot more than their opposite. I suspect that's at least partly why Bujold did Ethan of Athos.

3 of 4: you mistake me. I've enjoyed most of Weber's work. I've just enjoyed it despite its flaws.

And quite often what we enjoy depends on what flaws happen to personally bother us and what don't, and that's different for everyone.

I haven't read any of the Weber books so I don't have a dog in this particular fight, 8-)

Anyone concur in my view that we may get the next book, set chronologically after Cryoburn either late next year or midway through the following one?
123 Knightof Lsama, Sun, 21st Oct '12 3:09:52 PM from The Sea of Chaos
[up] A friend on the Lois Mc Master Bujold Mailing list says its highly unlikely. Word is that her muse currently isn't the mood for more Vorkosigan Saga books and that we only got "Captain Vorpatril's Alliance" because fan demand was so high and that any attempts to force it will probably result in the series crashing and burning in a wreck from which there will be no survivors.

While I wouldn't mind more Vorkosigan books, if she is worn out writing the series I can understand and accept her not continuing.

It's possibly not rational, but I'd rather a series end than continue on past the end of good ideas and become a Franchise Zombie.

Oh bugger. I know what you guys are saying is right, but Miles and his family deserve better. I hope that Mrs Bujold comes back refreshed with some new ideas at some future point.
