You might run into some error message or other about the archive header being broken when you try to extract the cd. Ignore it like the whispers of those that say Miles Naismith Vorkosigan is a Mary Sue. Drown them out with the cry of, "I'mma going to extract it anyway, sucka!"

And mount the .iso you end up with with something like Magic Iso.

http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm

works fairly well.

I'm ignoring cries of mary sue most of the time, don't worry :/ Sadly it's kinda practice to declare any character which isn't an Anti-Hero on my World of Warcraft server as such, so I'm by now somewhat suspicious about its use.

More often than not, using it in a serious, non-ironic manner has proven to be a sign the person using it isn't someone whose opinion should matter to me, from experience around the internet.

(Tangentially, at one DragonCon I did see a young lady whose costume was one of those sign boards you wear that said "I'm a Mary Sue" or somesuch. I think I got a photo of it, but I'll dig through my old DC pics later.)

My favorite book for introducing people to the series is Brothers In Arms. It's early enough in the series that you don't get major spoilers, but late enough that you start to get an idea of just how good the writing gets later in the series. Not that the earlier books were bad, of course, but Bujold grew a lot as a writer between The Warrior's Apprentice and Brothers In Arms.

If it's someone I already know will like the whole series, I'll probably recommend starting either at the very beginning, or with The Warrior's Apprentice, but for most people, I think BIA is an excellent introduction.

When discussing favorites, though, I'm disappointed that more people haven't mentioned Mirror Dance. It's not necessarily my very favorite (not sure I have one of those), but it's definitely in my top three, or maybe four. The one-two punch of Mirror Dance and Memory is what convinced me I was reading something way above the level of most space opera. :)
"Existential Despair" is an oxymoron.

Mirror Dance isn't seen as pivotal in the saga as Memory, which is why it doesn't seem to get a lot of push from fans. But it is the book where I really started to like Mark, who is as I said my favourite character out of the entire legion of them other than Miles himself.

The way Mark takes down Ryoval really pisses me off that no-one has seen fit to filmize or animize the books yet. unarmed, bound and beaten the shit out of and he still destroys the fuck. Awesome.

Update: Decided at 1 AM to read the first few chapters. Bad Idea. Shards of Honor finished at 5:50 AM....

[up]Heh. I know that feeling. Baen did it to me again when I got Eric Flint's 1635-Eastern Front cd.

When do you folks think we are going to get the first Count Miles Naismith Vorkosigan book?

Hmm, I'm not sure. I hope soon.

Miles wasn't dealing with things well when we left him.

Actually, I'm of the opinion that post-Cryoburn would be a good point to time-skip and focus the story on one of Miles and Ekaterina's children.

I'm also of the opinions that making one of their daughters just a military mad as Miles when he was younger would be the perfect karmic retribution for all the grief that Miles gave his parents.

There's going to be a bunch of children, not just Miles'. Could be interesting.

Yup. I am a bit ambivalent on the time skip thing, though. There are times when they work, such as in the Lion King, and there are times when they don't, and the biggest one I have problems with would cause accusations of blasphemy.

The gap between Captain Vorpatril's Alliance and Cryoburn is about as far as I can go with.
89 Knightof Lsama, Sat, 1st Sep '12 5:07:02 AM from The Sea of Chaos
Captain Vorpatril's Alliance is set between Diplomatic Immunity and Cryoburn from everything I've heard so time skip isn't really the right word. If anything its filling the gap between previous books rather than a time skip.

There is a seven year gap (minimum) between CVA and Cryoburn. That is a time skip in anyone's language.

Not given the way Bujold writes; there's no reason to think she won't write more books in that gap.

One lives in hope. I only started reading the books when I got the Cryoburn cd, I never had to deal with the gap in time it took for her to finish all the books up to that point, and I just hope that I don't have to wait much longer for another title.

She seems to average about one book a year, though she has another world she writes in too, and that can delay a Vorkosigan book.

The Chalion books? Yeah, them's good readin' as well, but I must admit I prefer the Vorkosigan books.

Yes, those are the ones, and I agree that I prefer the Vor books, but authors need to do their own things; and we can but hope.

There's both the Chalion books and the Wide Green World/Sharing Knife series. I like the first Chalion book and third Sharing Knife book better than anything in the Vor Saga since Memory, and the rest of both series are kind of hit and miss IMO. But almost anything she wants to write next I will read.

Agreed, sort of. If it is another Vorkosigan Saga book, I would probably plump for the eARC version, as I did for CVA. If it was a Challionverse book, I would probably wait until the retail ebook version came out.

Something brought up on the Vorkosigan Wiki Beta Colony talk page here.

Thoughts?

Oh, I'm absolutely sure not everything is fine in the Betan "paradise". On the other hand, for most I'm sure it's a pretty open and free life — but because such a "nice" society's control mechanisms have a little more finesse doesn't mean they aren't there.

I suspect, politically, they probably have a legislative body with lots of factions and weak, coalition governments. This is probably why you can't find many voters for the president; his faction isn't huge, but he's good at the backroom dealing that builds governing coalitions.

What happens to people uncomfortable with the sexual mores of Beta Colony? If they're foreigners, they don't have to follow them, just not be intolerant of them. If they're a citizen, though, I suspect it's considered a deficiency in need of a psychiatrist to "get over those archaic inhibitions" or the like. We already saw with Cordelia that they're a little over-keen on psychiatric intervention.

I don't buy that sex tourism is a big industry — it's just one that fascinates visitors from prudish cultures such as Barrayar! So we get more attention on it than it probably really deserves.

I suspect they do get by mostly on tech and trade, as stated.

I suspect that the quotas on Betans in the Survey are specifically to prevent it being majority non-native; Betans are rather risk-averse and happy to exist in their safe bubble, for the most part.

I have a lot going on in my life just now so I can't give a real response to that post yet. I need all my braincells firing to do a decent job of it so I will have to give it a miss for now. It is interesting, though.
