"Thank you, Chen" Jet said as he took back the tea cup with his left hand, and taking a big gulp. "And she's right, Tia. I've probably never seen her, but I was never looking before, either. I'll keep a eye out for her from now on, see if we have any similar cases or reports. And if you ever remember something else, need help, or see someone you recognize from back then, take this," he reached his right hand down to his 29's holster... and pulled out a business card from nearby, placing it on the table, "and call me. Doesn't matter if it's three in the morning or three in the afternoon, I always answer my phone. Well," he chuckled, "unless it's the chief. Anyway, I suppose it's past your bedtime, and I have to get going."

As he got up, he added, "Mr. Teilhaber, could you show me to the door?" He asked more seriously than he had been talking earlier, staring into the other man's eyes - or at least pointing his lenses at his general eye area. It was a lot harder to stare people down ever since his recovery.

"I may be gritty, but I like living."

Gum-Girl didn't actually completely run away. She was hiding on top of the warehouse. When Holocaust walked out of it, she dropped a huge heavy block of harden gum on top of him, attempting to slam it into his head at full speed.

"The biggest fucking party ever, that's what. Imagine it. Hundreds and hundreds of people cheering and dancing to my music, your rap, all of them ready to sacrifice themselves for any cause we come up with it, as long as we spin in as being for the music. The largest dance floor EVER! Flashing lights and bumping bass in the biggest, tallest building in Radio City. The most influential people in the city would be there. We party as long as it takes to cause total absolute CHAOS! Uuuugh! It sounds so fucking exciting, right?!?!"

"Whachow!" Holocaust yelled out; he set the building on fire specifically because he knew she was on it! With one arm he blasted the block of gum with fire, and with the other fired the new gun. As it erupted in a shower of steaming adhesive, he nodded in approval. "Thespian knows me, this isn't really my style! Won't stop me from using it."

"Thanks, Mr. Kane," said Tia. "I appreciate your goodwill."
She paused and regarded him. "Mommy always said that you are supposed to help those who help you. So if you need my help, you know how to find me. Mr. Teilhaber won't mind, will you Mr. Teilhaber?"
"Of course not, little one. I have faith in your abilities," said Felix.
"Well, good night, Miss Chen, Mr. Kane," said Tia. She nodded, hopped on the armchair again, and continued to read.
Felix got up with a little effort and escorted Kane and Chen to the door.
"Now, what do you want to tell me out of Tia's earshot?" he asked, regarding the Cyborg detective levelly.

"You can probably guess," replied Jet," that I'm not calling CPS, because I think she's better off here." He leaned in close, "don't do anything to prove me wrong."

He had seen too many cases with older veterans to simply leave leave without warning the man. Then again, considering the girl could cut him in half, it probably wasn't necessary.

"I won't give you a reason to," Felix told Jet mellowly. "After all, I don't keep her here; she's free to go. I just provide her with food and a place to sleep in (she only has one suit of clothes but it's in perfect condition and was so from the time I first saw her). I sometimes talk to her, but I try not to bother her."
He looked back to the salon. "She's like the grandchild I never had — my son left the country a long time ago and I didn't hear from him for a long time. I won't do anything bad to her. At least not on purpose. You can count on that."
He opened the door. "Good night, Miss Reishou. Good night, Detective. If you need anything from me or Tia, drop by. Or you can phone us."
He handed Jet a small note with a telephone number on it. Curiously, it ended in '1138'.

Jerry considered the young woman's, the Black Orchid's, answer. She reminded him of a voice from his past, a hooded man who was roughly his size who could move like a ghost. A grey ghost, if you would. He favored her with a crooked smile. "I know something of 'balance' and the 'hand of justice' business. That's why you helped me, yeah?"

"What we do now is report the missing jewels to the police," Sheathe said. "Have them put out a word to jewelers, pawn shops, etc. to be on the lookout for them, try to convince a few dealers in stolen goods to help keep an eye out. Not much to be done until the jewels or Darktail resurfaces.

"Unless you meant just during the night in general. Me, I'm gonna call it an early evening and head home."

Correct. After all, with his power he could just keep one version of himself on stand by and let the rest get killed. So getting them all might be a problem.

Still, I'd rather not let this drag on for too long. I'm sure you understand why.

The Thespian paused.

I’m stepping off the stage for now. We’ll be in touch.

Tossing the phone into the drawer, he locked it and rose from his seat. He had played enough of the criminal mastermind for the night, the man thought to himself. Taking one quick look over everything to make sure nothing was out of place, Ial Lesson picked up the pieces of his civilian identity and headed out into the night.

"Let's report those jewels, then I'll turn in for the night too." Stalwart said. "We should do this again sometime. Attempt to stop crimes, that is."

He grabbed his weapons, stepped past Sheathe, and launched out of the sewer.

"Good." Jet said firmly as he took the piece of paper. He looked at the number for a moment, and then put it into his pocket. "I'll be seeing you."

He then sighed, because he knew the woman next to him would insist on talking to him as soon as the door closed. Better that than blackmail, he supposed.

Chen smiled as she left. "Goodbye Tia! Say hi to me if you get the chance, okay?" She produced her own card, which was the work number for her conservatory project, and left it just next to Jet's own card. "And thank you for having us, Mr..." Chen giggled nervously as she tried to avoid tripping over the pronunciation. "... Teilhaber. Have a good evening."

When the door closed Chen nodded her head in deference to Jet. "I'm so sorry, officer. I must have forgotten my manners for whatever reason. I hope I haven't inconvenienced you too much this evening?"

Of course...

Taya was beginning to come up with something... First she'd just need to get herself on Multiplayer's radar. Kill off at least one of his clones. Then would come the epic part. She'd need help though...

Any personnel you can lend me? Expendable, I mean? He had already left, so Taya just let the message go to voicemail. She'd need to take care of the opening act, anyways. Wait, why had she just thought with that term? Perhaps Thespian's behavior was contagious. Taya had some of her low grade stuff already stowed into a sack... there, that crate should have them.

Sodium-based, enough power to blow a hole in a concrete wall. These needed some setup due to their size and detonation method, but then, setup was what Taya's 'art' was all about. That would be enough for now. The lot was stored in a tightly sealed bag, which she slung over her shoulder. She grabbed her jacket and made for her car. Every door was locked. All five of them. Nobody would be none the wiser, but a new killer was on the loose. For now. Tomorrow she had a date with a potential cosplayer. Taya hoped the job wouldn't run interference with that.

Taya loaded the bag into her van. She picked through the coordinates, deciding between going after a group for maximal impact or a solo target for simplicity's sake. Ultimately, she decided on the biggest target possible, for several reasons: she wasn't afraid of death anyways, it would be pretty badass to take on a whole bunch at once, and she wanted to go through as many bombs as possible so she didn't have to go back to the warehouse that night... This would have to be an open challenge, which meant...

A quick stopover at her house, a costume from her clothes rack removed. The coordinates Thespian had given her seemed to imply that the group of clones was heading to a specific location. Taya would just have to drive around until she found her mark.

The words coming from the radio made Rosette a bit more aware of her situation... while she trusted Multiman as the man who saved her she didn't let him take her arm again... though she kept walking at his side "Is he... watching...us?"

Home sweet home. Gabe pulled up to a slightly rundown apartment about an hour's drive from work and, as usual, offered up a prayer to any gods who would listen that his car would not break down before he had a chance to sell it for scrap. Which was exactly what he intended to do once he had saved up enough money to buy something a little more fancy. Working for Braeburn wasn't exactly the big time but they weren't exactly making chump change either and, as a department head, Mike knew he was being considered for elevation to full Partner, along with a share in the profits that this entailed.

All in good time, though. First there was the matter of the investigation. Mike opened up the small laptop on his desk and started loading the images. So far he only knew that whatever this man had been murdered by, it as magic, and he had a face. No name, though. He was on no publically available watchlists or criminal registries. As for the murder weapon itself, it was unlikely to be a spell since it had left very visible marks on the body. If the killer were going to use a spell, why bother with physical harm when there are a dozen and one untraceable magicks? As such, Mike narrowed it down to an enchanted weapon of some sort, one that left a visible trace of its effects.

"Weapon drains life out of victim, blood discoloration, pallor", read the post-it note. Mike tacked it to a cork board on the wall. He followed it with a printed photo of the victim. A red string was pinned to the photo, leading to a question mark at the center of the board — the unknown killer.

With that, Mike began going trawling the web, looking for archives of the local newspapers. It was going to be a long night.

"What a coincidence," said Gold Dollar. "I'm just a man doing a job myself. An honest job. Now this little stunt of yours - it'd kill a regular person. I can't have people jumping around landing on other people - it's not good for business, not good for the victim, and not good for you. Could break a leg."

"No, no problem at all," Jet replied. "In fact, if you go home right now, I'll forget all about this."

"Yeah, but that doesn't actually mean anything." Multiplayer explained to Rosette. "That's his power, his only power: omniscience. Sure he can see everything, but he certainly can't affect everything like me."

They were coming up on some apartments. "Which one is yours? Like what's the number?"

James looked at the directions for a bit before nodding and smiling. "Alright, that's not too far."

They group walked for a bit before entering into James's modest vehicle, setting off for Jordan's church.

Sheathe climbed after Stalwart and headed back to the museum. Darktail's smashing of the jewelry case had alerted the police; quite a few cars had already arrived. The superheroine told them her piece before driving off on her motorcycle, done for the night.

Chen smiled slightly. "Of course, officer. I know Tia is in the right hands." Chen nodded and made her way from the building alone. It was one of the rare times when she didn't have control of a situation. In the future, she'd have to be more careful to avoid stepping on anybody's toes. Home was quite a ways away, she realized. Sighing, she looked around for the nearest bus stop.

"Good. And, well, be safe," Jet said as he started to quickly walk away, back towards the crime scene. Outside the building, he glanced around for a second before getting into his car and driving off, resuming his night patrol.

Capes he thought to himself.

"Correct. Were you to fall, it would create an imbalance in this city's struggle of good and evil," said 1138-a. "I doubt those petty thieves' lives would have sufficed to balance the scales again."
She finished cleaning the dagger and sheathed it, putting the cloth in a pocket. She regarded Jerry levelly, obviously waiting for him to do something.

Later that evening

Tia yawned. She marked the place she was in and closed her book. Felix was sitting in the salon, too; he was smoking a pipe and thinking, stroking his moustache absentmindedly.
"I am going to bed," said Tia.
Felix roused himself.
"What? Oh, I'll bring your blanket," he said. He got up and went to another room. After a few minutes he returned with a large, white blanket. Tia sat down in the same armchair; she leaned back, and he covered her.
"Good night, little one," he said, caressing her hair.
"Good night, Mr. Teilhaber," she said. She turned on her side and was almost instantly asleep. Felix nodded, a smile softening his wizened face, and went away, turning the light off as he did so.
You don't have anything to worry about, Mr. Detective, he thought, I'd sooner lose my other leg than hurt that girl.

"Ummm... Actually, I thought they weren't thieves, at first."

"The first time I pulled something like that, I got cussed out by some big wig in a floaty chair for messing with his 'exercises.'" Jerry stuck his tongue out. "So when I found these yahoos," he toed the unconscious form of the thief with the broken nightvision goggles.. "I followed them since "they stepped out of their van." The eyes behind the ruby mask hardened. "When they knifed that guard making the rounds, all bets were off."

The well-dressed avenger met where he thought were the Black Orchid's eyes. "Far as I can tell, I don't like the twenty-first century. I think it just made what was wrong with the last one worse."

Multiplayer walked Rosette the rest of the way home, having quiet and presumably relationship-building smalltalk on the way. The carful of Ricks dropped off three with guns to guard Rosette's apartment while the fourth drove to a nearby drugstore for a first-aid kit. The Rick that walked her home fixed up Rosette's wounds with minimal fuss, and decided to stay there on the couch, a gun within arm's reach. The jewelry store Ricks walked home, along with the rest of the Ricks left in the car.

So let's recap:

  • One Rick at the home apartment, chilling all night.
  • One Rick walking home after failing to catch Maria
  • Two Ricks walking home after stashing their spoils from the jewelry store
  • One Rick, one of the two pretending to be dock workers, protecting Rosette
  • The other Rick, in a stolen car with two others, driving home as well
This brings us to a grand total of eight Ricks for the night.

The Black Orchid nodded. She went to the edge of the building and jumped to the next one. Soon she vanished into the shadows.
She made her way toward her hideout — a small, nondescript apartment not far from her sister's tea shop. She opened the various traps and locks, entered, closed them behind her, and went to the bedroom. The bed, as usual, was damp. She took her armour off; she wore a bodysuit beneath it. She took it off, too, and lied down in the bed. Soon she was asleep, or whatever passed for sleep for an animated plant.

He turned to watch her go, with no response whatsoever. He cupped a gloved hand to his mouth and breathed.

"Was it my breath?" Jerry shouted after her disappearing form. The Gentleman Avenger (the 18th, in fact) sighed again and sat upon the stomach of one of the unconscious thugs, his exertions finally getting to him.

It was true, the part about not liking the twenty-first century. He grew up in a time when science was the hope of tomorrow, when it was the touted as the answer to all man's ills. And he'd seen its potential, even though he could barely understand what made it so special.

Jerry Kings remembered when progress made people feel wonder.

He sighed one more time, before rising from his seat. He couldn't sit there forever. Still too much to do.

The Gentleman Avenger took a running leap of the edge, drawing his grappling gun as he ran. Before long, he was doing what he did best, running through rooftops and swinging through buildings. To find his way home.

"...And yet, even though I do enjoy this line of work, it will not come free. For such a large scale operation, I expect...twenty persons, of good health with no magical background. Nothing less."
