Keep Until Better Image Suggested.... No, Keep even IF a better image is suggested. :D
Keep Until Better Image Suggested — no, maybe it doesn't illustrate all of the trope. It is, however, damn funny.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Only if you're American, though. note

Keep except if way better image suggested. This is too funny to replace.
The pic is fantastic and I see no reason to cut it...except that I don't think we have permission to use it. I'm going to temporarily remove it, contact the artist, and try to secure permission.
EDIT: Note's sent...hopefully I'll hear from him soon.

Just because it's fantastic and funny doesn't mean it's relevant.
As I said, despite being literal, the picture doesn't seem to display the "gameplay" aspect that defines the genre.

I like the first pic you've suggested.
And just because it's not 100% relevant to the trope doesn't mean it can't work. In most cases, I'd support using an actual work, but in this one, the only way I'd turn to something else is if the artist either doesn't respond or denies permission.
Backing up Willbyr—if we obtain permission, the pic is humorous enough.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerWell, just because it's literal doesn't mean that it demonstrates the trope.
In fact, I don't think select screens tell what the trope is about!
It may even be a MUGEN game (which generally aren't mascot fighters according to the trope) or any other conventional crossover fighting game.
In fact, it could may as well be "Just A Face And A Caption" if it was a real game!
Besides, according to this article, images that are literal can be misleading and, therefore, not always viable.

While funny, I'm going to have to agree that the proposed mock character selection screen doesn't show the trope at all. It just shows a character selection screen for some kind of a versus game. Considering the trope is about a specific type of fighting game (which is a generally chaotic more-than-two player fighter), it would be better to have an image that showcases said difference.
Check out my fanfiction!I'm gonna have to side with Willbyr on this one, honestly. Pic it too loaded in Rule of Funny to give up, example or no.
Moon◊We got permission from the artist. I uploaded a slightly bigger version of the pic...I'll go ahead and put it back on the page since it was only pulled to resolve the permission issue.

I don't think you guys get it.
Just because it's funny, amazing and literal doesn't mean it demonstrates the trope, as select screens DON'T actually show gameplay at all!
In fact, I think this picture is more like Just A Face And A Caption, as besides being literal, it has NOTHING to do with the work at all!
As I said in my previous post, literal images can be misleading.
Therefore, I propose we either change the image to depict gameplay or DON'T have a picture at all!
See Visual Pun. In some cases, an image doesn't have to show the trope — What Happened to the Mouse?, The Power of Cheese (is the thread for that still open?), Flying Brick, and so on. We know it's not an example, we just think it's too funny to get rid of. There's currently a Wiki Talk thread about clear vs. witty and all.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. The Power of Cheese IP thread is closed.
Yes, we have a preference for funny Visual Pun images where they look well, as in Straw Fan.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanCan you provide me with said thread so that I for myself?
If I see that the thread states it's okay, then I'll stop.
There's Fridge Logic in your statement, though, as this thread states:
"Images based on a Literal-Minded interpretation of the trope's title can be misleading. For example, Pet the Dog is not about petting dogs, it's a metaphor, which is a reason that the page features a kitten instead."
Here. Also, please see the pinned threads in this subforum namely "Too quick pulls".
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIn that case...
It's only witty to those who are Americans, though, as I only recognise two of the resturants the mascots in the picture represents. note
Even when it was pointed it was supposed to be funny I still don't see the picture as funny. note .
Therefore, I still think we might need a different picture.

I'm not American and still find it hilarious.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerWell, I bet you have the branches of those restaurants where you live.
In my country, only two in the list have taken root here, Mc Donalds and KFC.
The others have either tried and failed, or didn't appear in my country at all!

Seconding lu here - I had to look up the girl on the left (we don't have Wendy's in Germany), but the picture is still clear, even without knowing who these characters are.
If you say so.
I want more opinions before I request this thread to be locked.
The trope says specificly that:
"Just because it's a crossover fighting game does not necessarily mean it's a Mascot Fighter. The distinction is in the gameplay (For an example, compare the mechanics of Smash Bros. to the Capcom Vs. series). "
The deviantart mockup of a character select screen, while being literal, doesn't really demonstrate the "gameplay" aspect of this genre.
