Needs Help: Inherently Funny Words

The page needs fixing or is more appropriate as Just For Fun. It's mostly words one editor thought was funny and decided to add to the list. I don't know how to explain that in more detail.

I can see it being a trope page on its own because there are media where characters In-Universe think a term is humorous, for example "HAWLEY-SMOOT TARIFF". Also, there are some in between... entries where some word or words appear in a piece of media, "noodle incident" from Calvin and Hobbes for instance, that a troper thinks is funny but isn't deemed funny in-universe, that are problematic as well.

Well, I took out the sentence in the introduction that said "Add your favorite funny words here." That may help. The page needs to be scrubbed down to "In-universe examples only"
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.
In other words, started over fro scratch?

Yes. There are In-Universe examples, but currently there's nowhere on the page to even put them.

A scan shows at least one in-universe example:

  • George Carlin once did a routine where he talks about foods he can't eat because they have funny names. "I can't eat *snicker* bananas. And I could never eat *suppressed guffaw* kumquats!"

And "gurt" from Echo Chamber. There are plenty of In-universe Examples. They're just lost in all the "'face' is really funny, especially if you get hit in it" garbage.

Routerie: Pretty much. Scrub the bad wicks, scrub the zero-context and personal opinion non-examples. The description is ok, but could use some tweaking. Make the page In-Universe only. I think if we do that we won't have to go the route of marking it YMMV or dumping it into Just For Fun as a lost cause.

There are In-Universe examples on the page, but because of the way the folders are arranged it's word-first with no good place for work examples. This leads to atrocious Example Indentation, Zero Context Examples, and lots of cases of "hey this is a word i thought would be fun to put on the page at three in the morning" (well, that's exaggerated and there's no First Person on the page, thankfully). It needs to either become a normal trope page with examples sorted by medium, or to have folders for words (though that mightn't cover unusual ones like gurt) which then have only In-Universe examples.

I'd say sort by medium. Maybe some words that have a lot of use across mediums could be separated out by word — I suspect that we could find "kumquat" in almost every medium, for example.

Definitely sort by medium, because otherwise we'd have to duplicate examples that use more than one funny word, like the one I posted above.

If the examples show a particular word is disproportionately common to be funny, we could possibly keep a list of those in the description, so long as it isn't overwhelmingly long.

Sort by medium of course, but I don't know about having a list of words in the description. I imagine either there are so many terms and phrases that a creator deems humorous that there aren't too many that pop up often enough to list, or it'll become something like the examples again.

Sort entries by medium, like it was done for Mondegreen. I don't think that having a list of funny words is required.

I did say "Maybe some words that have a lot of use across mediums could be separated out by word." Note "Maybe" and "some". I'm not suggesting a long list of words, but allowing a word that is a widely-used example across several mediums to be separated out by word will keep the example list from turning into a mish-mash, where the entry in "Comic books" acquires a bunch of sub-bullets list the same word in books and on TV and in the movies, and in webcomics.

I think what might also help is if this was put in as a YMMV entry, since what is funny is a matter of perspective. Especially in regards to foreign language words, since I imagine a number of them are only funny to a non-native speaker.
something something meaningful, deep, something
It might be a lot of work, but personally I think it'd work to have the page separated into two—one regular, foldered page for in-universe examples, and another Just for Fun page that essentially copy-pastes the current lists. With the latter linked to at the end of the page description saying "If you want to add your own examples, go here; this page is for in-universe examples only".

The consensus appears to be in favor of making the actual page about in-universe examples anyway, so I don't see that as much of a problem.

I'm pretty much apathetic towards the survival of the current examples.

I'll second Ingonyama's suggestion.
Bad luck and misfortune will infest your pathetic soul for all eternity.
At the very least the In-Universe (therefore non-YMMV) examples need to be a separate page from the troper opinions, if those are kept at all. They might be fun to keep as a Just for Fun page, but that ain't a trope. "Funny Words" are inherently subjective, not inherently funny.

Not that I don't find some of them funny, mind.

I think we should keep the old examples and move them to a Just for Fun page.

I've started a sandbox to archive them. Help with that would be appreciated!

Split between In-Universe and "troper" things? You have my get-go.

The main page is fine now, and the sandbox can be moved to Just for Fun/ at any point. I think we're done here as soon as that's shifted; wicks aren't an issue.

Sandbox.Inherently Funny Words cutlisted. Just for Fun page created, typed, and indexed, and link to page added to main page. Lock request underway.

The system doesn't know you right now, so no post button for you.
You need to Get Known to get one of those.
