The description for this trope is video game specific. However, the trope name is much more broad, and sound-coding appears in all media (Scare Chord or Leitmotif would be subtropes, for example).

I suggest we give this the same treatment we gave Color-Coded for Your Convenience: transplant this trope to something with a narrower name and make this a broad, multi-media supertrope.

And whatever we do, flesh out the description, because it reads like a laconic.

Sounds like a plan to me. We need to reactivate the SE thread bout unnecessarily medium specific tropes.

44 wicks and 9 inbounds, for the record. And as a snowclone of Color-Coded for Your Convenience, I have some underuse concerns.

I brought it up in that thread, but because it was a transplant and not just a broadening, it was concluded to be a TRS issue.

If it's the same as Color-Coded for Your Convenience but with sound, I see no reason why a snowclone would necessarily be a bad thing.

Okay, not much interest here. The only thing that's really a choice is whether we keep the current name for the supertrope or rename it, assuming we do anything. So, crowner time.

The options here are mutually exclusive - need more votes here.

For those voting against the snowclone, keep in mind that snowclones are not necessarily bad. In this case, it is related to the trope it's snowcloning off of and works as a name by itself without understanding Color-Coded for Your Convenience.

I just don't like the snowcloned name — not because I hate snowclones, but because "sound-coded" is just a terrible phrase, to my ears.

By the way, how is this trope distinct from Signature Sound Effect? Doesn't that already cover video game enemies that have a specific, highly-recognizable sound? The trope says "not to be confused with Signature Sound Effect" but does not explain in what way they are different.

Signature Sound Effect is sound effects that are associated with a single character (Mario's jump sound, moogles' kupo sound effect, etc). Sound-Coded for Your Convenience is things that are sound-coded so that you can tell them apart (two powerups making different noises so you can tell what you got, using a sound effect in a game of hot-and-cold, etc). They can overlap, I suppose, but they don't seem very similar to me.

[up]Maybe SSE needs some cleanup, then. A number of examples are not specific to a given character — the first example talks about monsters in DOOM with unique sound effects, and others mention the lightsaber noise, the entire Hanna-Barbara sound library (!), and the sound Babylon 5 handguns (PPGs) make when powering up or down.

Ah, my bad, apparently it also covers signature sound effects to a series. Still, it's not about sounds being used to tell things apart or convey more information, it's about sounds that reoccur so often within a series that they're instantly associated with that series.

Ah — I see. The Mario Coin Sound or Jump Sound doesn't tell you much of anything, but it's unique to those games. Got it.

Bumping this. To be honest, what is the difference between the crowner options except for the wording?

Gentleman Troper!
The difference is that the bottom option assumes that the supertrope will be named Sound-Coded for Your Convenience, and the top option leaves the name open.
Special trousers. Very heroic.

I'd prefer to use Sound Coded Blah for the supertrope, on the line of Color-Coded for Your Convenience.

The plain and boring Video Gamesound Code is the first thought for the video game trope.

Ok, supertrope YKTTW here and the Alt Names crowner here

Bumping this for votes, as the crowner icon isn't showing up.

Also, on the YKTTW someone has given objections to the current name of the YKTTW.

I'm proposing Sound Effect Cue as a title, since — if I understand the trope correctly — the idea is that a bit of sound or music gives you a heads up as to what's coming. Is this correct? If not, then I'll just shuffle back into my corner.

The problem with that is that this is a video game specific trope.

I gave a new suggestion in the YKTTW discussion. Still too excessive? I can start over and try again.

Sounds Suspicious For Your Speculation? It's a snowclone, yeah, but with a better sounding than the original... (I am not very familiar with where to propose alternative names, and I'm assuming this is the correct place for that.)

How about "Convenient Sound Classification"? The trope description sounds to me like "sounds indicate something about a character or event".

Bumping this to get more votes and hopefully feedback on the description in the YKTTW.

Alternative Titles: Sound Coded For Your Convenience
4th Jan '13 3:44:11 AM
Vote up names you like, vote down names you don't. Whether or not the title will actually be changed is determined with a different kind of crowner (the Single Proposition crowner). This one just collects and ranks alternative titles.
At issue:
Previous Crowner decided to rename Sound Coded For Your Convenience. This crowner is for finding names for the video game specific trope.
