Needs Help: Boys Love Genre

Go To

Currently, Boy's Love and Yaoi are custom-titled to show up as Boys' Love Genre. However, way back when all this was going on with Yuri and everything, it was brought up that the two should really match. They should either be custom-titled to Boy's Love Genre/Girl's Love Genre, or Yaoi Genre/Yuri Genre. At the time, there was a lot going on and tensions were heated, so it was forgotten about.

My vote is just to have Boy's Love and so on custom-titled to Yaoi (genre) to match Yuri Genre. It's the original and more broadly-used term; it only makes sense to have it as the main title.

Thoughts?

Makes sense. I'd prefer Yaoi (genre) over Boy's Love/Boys' Love/whatever.

Bump. I realize this isn't exactly high priority, but it shouldn't take long.

Consistency is good. Sounds fine to me.

Actually I'm pretty sure there's a problem with custom titling what once was "Yaoi" because it was changed by admin decision so we can't do anything about it (it was an issue back when it all got changed because of some indexing problems). I think you may have to get Fast Eddie to take care of that one.

EDIT: Misread your post. Still, we can make an appeal, and then get a response. That's how the system works.

Yeah, It's kinda just bugs meing me.

I mean, it's like we're censoring the word "yaoi" or something.

We don't censor the words "yuri" or "Bara", do we?

[up]IIRC, Fast Eddie is really not a fan of Japanese if there's an English equivalent, and that had a lot to do with the change from "Yaoi" to "Boys' Love Genre". The last appeal was ignored, but if you want to try again it's probably been long enough since then (at least a year).

[up][up]I have no idea what you originally wrote, but in case there was misunderstanding, I wasn't intending to say "don't even bother" or something, just that I do think we will need Fast Eddie on this specifically from what I remember of last time. Of course, I could be mistaken.

I understand how we don't want Japanese words in non-Japanese tropes, that's invoking Fangirl Japanese.

But if it's an Anime Trope, then why not?

I honestly don't care in the slightest what this is called, but I can understand wanting consistency with similar tropes.

Did it have anything to do with problems with advertisers?

Not at all, unless the former name is a porn name.

To be fair I think the crowner should include both sides, i.e. "change A to match B" but also "change B to match A".

[up]Yes. That's my preference. I don't like Gratuitous Japanese in trope names.

What part of "feel free to add more options" was unclear?

Though it's not gratuitous when it's a Japanese genre.

[up] The part where I don't know what a "yuri" is or what a good English name for it would be.

I don't think a name like "yoai" is an improvement, it's substantially less clear than the current name.

[up]I assume you want to change 'manga' to 'Japanese comic' as well?

Look, we are not inventing the term. The term already exist and it is used for exactly what we are defining.

Also, it is clearer. Everyone who already knows the genre will know its name. For who doesn't, however, 'Boy's Love' may mislead them to something more general (any gay romance) or even more specific (pedo gay romance). They would have to learn something new anyway.

Yeah, Yuri is incomprehensible to non-Japanese but Boy's Love sounds like something wider or like shotacon. Plus, it's a Japanese thing.

Yaoi is incomprehensible to non-Japanese speakers, but so is Boys Love. What is boys love? You won't know unless you've already heard of it. Moreover, it's a genre exclusive to Japanese media, and it already has a name. Calling it Boys Love is like calling wasabi Green Sauce.
