Because there should be a topic.

To the uninformed: Masaaki Yuasa is a critically lauded animation director best known for his film Mind Game and the series Kemonozume, Kaiba and The Tatami Galaxy. It's hard to say that he has a "style"—he's done some very different things—but his work can be reasonably easily recognised by its fluid motion, atypical character designs, and total unabashed trippiness.

So, um... yeah. Discuss at will.

Mind Game looks interesting, but can you tell me anything about the plot? Or is that impossible?

Strangely, I have not seen it yet, but The Other Wiki has a pretty thorough plot summary (which you may want only to read the beginning of).

Basic gist seems to be thus: A comic artist meets a childhood friend (with whom he is infatuated) in her parents' restaurant. While talking over dinner, the friend is kidnapped by the yakuza. After that... things get really trippy.

Master Bird
I've come here by means of a google alert set up to his name. I'm not an anime fan, but this guy is a genius. I cant' understand how so few people know his work. Look for Cat Soup on youtube, look for his amazing series Kaiba, and look for Mind Game, of course. I won't try to describe the plot of Mind Game. I don't feel that would be fair to other aspects of the show. The story is good, sure, but the greatest thing about the movie is how everything is done. The animation is unique, cartoony and stylish, the camera angles are interesting and extreme at times. Gee, go check it out yourselves!
kick, punch, it's all in the mind

Cat Soup is one of my favourite short animated films ever. It's just so strange and compelling, very funny yet also very, very sad. Especially the ending. Oh dear God, the ending...

[up] Cat Soup is icky but fascinating, yes.

My fave work of his is Tatami Galaxy. I binged it and it was glorious.
Not Actually Indie
I've seen Mind Game. I haven't watched as many movies as most people, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen another one as weird.

I want to watch The Tatami Galaxy, but I've only seen about half of it, and most of the episodes seem to no longer be available online.

Oh, god, The Tatami Galaxy was freaking awesome.

...I should go rewatch that one right now. Been far too long.
People say I have a problem with authority. I say that authority has a problem with me.

[up][up] Torrents are probably the best option.

It was a wonderful experience.

@Desertopa: You can watch it on Hulu. And you should. It is seriously one of my favourite animated shows of all time.

In related news, Yuasa has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new short with Production I.G.

This shall be glorious.

P.S. I am surprised and delighted that this thread has led people to watch more of this man's oeuvre. I just feel so happy now.

[up] Kickstarter for a short film? Now that's interesting.

He's gonna be a guest director for an upcoming episode of Adventure Time.
With Flickr action!
MIND GAME: A delinquent cartoonist is devastated when his high school crush is marrying someone else, they both get into trouble with the Yakuza, then they and 2 of their friends are run over a bridge..... and into the belly of a whale, where they meet an eccentric old man who's been stuck in their for ages, and they all learn a bit about their lives. ... it's basically a modern-day Japanese Jonah And The Whale, but seeing the movie is required in order to get a grasp on how amazing it is!

[up]Yes, he is directing and writing an upcoming Adventuretime episode. The clip shows that they're still gonna have the English voice actors, and the characters (in the beginning at least) are more or less on-model.

One of his pupils supervised the plant planet episode of Space Dandy.

Sneak peak of the episode.

It really reminds me of Happy Machine so far. Except a lot less depressing.
The system doesn't know you right now, so no post button for you.
You need to Get Known to get one of those.
