Still no topic on this? LOL

This has got to be the dark horse of the season, considering nobody really thought it would be this good. The premise of the show is quite ridiculous that it's ridiculously done well, and is quite ridiculous (as in being a comedy, not as being from beyond reason).

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.

For some reason I just can't buy the giant syringe. Everything else, sure, whatever, fiction, but the giant syringe is crossing a line. Why the heck does a god of misfortune (who is herself unfortunate for whatever reason) need to physically stab someone (who is naturally lucky in terms of avoiding these things) in order to do her job? Something's gone terribly, terribly wrong in the design stage of this operation. Frankly, I can't see how this department gets anything done. Or even begins to get near to the point where something might get done.

I can accept the lack of omnipotence. I mean, they're just kami. Not like they're laws of physics. If I can accept someone outwitting a personification of death, I can accept someone outwitting a personification of misfortune. But she doesn't even need to outwit her. She just needs to exist. The hard counter to gods of misfortune are the very people they're meant to target. And her only options are to set silly Doraemon parody traps?

This really annoys me. Possibly because I read too much Touhou. In there, when someone snubs their nose at the powers that be you at least get the impression that it's kind of badass.

Hadn't even considered the powers. Really I'd say whatever arbitrary rules the show decides to set in place should be fine provided they can make them work.

If you consider that this kami is probably a little incompetent, it's not much more implausible than something like Soul Eater.

But I found it overdone in places. Not terribly original, and not terribly funny, to me at least.

I don't think I'll keep watching but it's not a terrible show.

[up][up]It's not really that you "read too much Touhou" but more of the fact that you imply there that "The Touhou way is the only way, and it's the best way, so if it isn't like Touhou, then it's s**t."

...that's an odd interpretation of my comment. Well, I won't deny it because I think it's true to a certain extent, although it's an impulse I consciously fight.

Yes, I acknowledge that it's a comedy. In comedy, things can just happen because it's funny. However, watching someone dodge a syringe is not particularly funny. It's like Chess with Death, except you took out the chess and replaced it with Tom And Jerry. Would it be funny to watch a cartoon mouse fight off the grim reaper for 24 minutes by constantly running into small holes? ...possibly.

I guess my main problem is that it seems inconsistent with her characterization. The kami is portrayed as lazy and reluctant. She just wants to get this job over with. She's hoping that her appeal to the target's better nature will work, but not relying on it. That being the case, why does she choose a tactic that literally cannot work? She's not stupid. She knows how these things work, at least on a layman level. Even if she can't immediately come up with a solution, putting it off for a while is also a course of action. The only possible reasons for her failure are a) success is absolutely impossible from the premise, no matter what methods she uses, in which case why does such an organization even exist, or b) the writers thought it would be funnier, in which case she's holding the Idiot Ball. Either way, the premise, even for a "zany comedy" is a bit insulting.

Inconsistent? Not realy. That Ojou has unnaturaly hight amount of luck. Enough to overpower God of misfortune, that is basic plot and I am pretty sure there is somenoes plan behind that anyway.

Also what are siringes for? For extraction fluids from human body. So using that for extraction of luck is reasonable and far simplier than use of for example catheterisation.

[up][up]Why would her failure with Sakura mean that the organization shouldn't exist in the first place? Did you just ignore the fact that Sakura is a one-of-a-kind human?

She's not one-of-a-kind. She's unusually lucky. She'd have been way more surprised if she was one-of-a-kind. Also, she can read the exact amount of luck with her little scouter thing. I'm not expecting her to be able to calculate hit rates based on that or whatever, but if it was out of her league she would have known beforehand.

That was actually a pretty funny premiere. Feels like The Roadrunner Show, actually, what with our God of Misfortune using her various ACME products Gadgets of Misfortune to drain luck from Ichiko, and constantly failing. The characters are fun to watch so far.

So, while not great, it's certainly a solid enough first episode that I'm going to keep watching.

[up][up] There's no denying that there's lots of fridge logic about this show. Like why the god doesn't just drain luck from Ichiko in her sleep or something. Basically, a heavy dose of MST 3 K Mantra would help a lot.

I think the main explanation is covered by reading the tvtropes wiki page about the manga. Namely, this is gonna be like Excel Saga in that the 4th wall barely exists.

The protagonist could come off as quite unappealing to some. The deulogonist seems a lot more sympathetic and entertaining to watch. Will keep tabs on this show...

Well, from an existentialist point of view, I can hardly argue with Ichiko's reasoning. I know I'd sure as hell be taking the same stance if I was in her position.

  • Her teeth and eyes pop out? This IS a Looney Tunes cartoon!
  • I love how Momiji can lie under the bridge and people just think she's a hobo! Clever way to avoid suspicion (.... other people can see her, right?). Also just noticed she only has one shoe!
  • Oh goodness, more wid the anime references! Oy!
  • "OH MAMA!"
  • Wow. Who's idea was it to make him a black guy? Not that I'm complaining. He's cool.
  • And a proud pervert.
  • Awwwwwwww crap she summoned Pokemon.
  • I'm gonna need to rewatch this just to catch all the visual jokes that go by in split seconds.
