Anglo saxon armour:
my question is what were the main types of armour for anglo saxons and vikings. i know that chainmail and boiled leather were two, along with some pretty cool helmets, but what else did they have?
His Royal HighnessNot an expert in any way, but I guess the common Saxon or Viking had no more armour than his ordinary shirt and a helmet made out of iron or leather, bering poor farmers. The main defense for these guys was their big shield. You know the Shield Wall being their main way of fighting.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!!!
Jolly Good ShowA bit of Scalemail for the EXCEPTIONALLY rich men, but that would be only post 9th Century, at the earliest. Besides that, it was typically chainmail, boiled leather, padded jerkins (gambesons). Bits and pieces of very rudimentary plate armour was possible (usually just a leather boot with metal plates attached). Chainmail was extremely rare for anyone who wasn't a Thegn (a Noble), but everyone had a shield. Armour really wasn't that necessary for them, as most melee weapons could crack through chainmail with a decent swing. A shield? Not so much.

Vikings wore mostly ring mail, leather, gambeson, lamellar made from horn plaques, and sometimes scale mail. Viking Answer lady has some good info Wikipedia page for Vikings Anglo Saxon Stuff BBC UK page on vikings
