Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):
- B-V
I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

Changed Murdoc from The Anti Hero to The Leader.
Other than the, the Gorillaz example seems fine to me.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Deleted this from Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for shoehorning. The group is split roughly in half trying to conspire against each other.
- Five Bad Band: An odd example in which the Five Bad Band is just as much antagonists to each other as they are to Sora and Riku. The basement dwellers (Vexen, Lexaeus, and Zexion) are actually in opposition to the others and their coup, with Vexen pretending to provide assistance to them. Axel is actually working to counteract Marluxia and Larxene as well, but ends up killing Vexen and Zexion too for reasons disclosed in 358/2 Days.
- Big Bad - Marluxia
- The Dragon - Larxene
- The Brute - Lexaeus
- The Evil Genius - Vexen
- The Dark Chick - Zexion
- Sixth Ranger Traitor - Axel
This one from Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] was also a shoehorn because 4 of the people are technically all the same person, the Evil Genius doesn't do anything related to the trope, and they're part of a group of 13.
- Five Bad Band: The new Organization XIII forms one out of the currently known members.
- Big Bad - Master Xehanort
- The Dragon - Xigbar
- The Evil Genius - Xemnas
- The Brute - Ansem, Seeker of Darkness
- The Dark Chick - Young Xehanort
- Sixth Ranger - Saïx/Isa
- Arguably, Xigbar and Young Xehanort could actually have their positions switched around. Despite revealing he's "half-Xehanort" and being Xehanort/Xemnas' hidden Dragon throughout the series, Xigbar is just as chatty as ever, easily coming across as the least serious member of the group. On the other hand, Young Xehanort, by virtue of being The Heavy, directly breaking Sora's heart at/near the climax of the game, and being the one tasked with gathering together the various incarnations of Xehanort across time in the first place, has the most direct presence of all the villains assembled. It's all a matter of interpretation.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Absolutely. That is dreadful. Cut it with extreme prejudice.
Deleted this from Until Dawn for massive shoehorning issues.
- Five-Man Band: The end of the game has main group of characters fit this dynamic, Matt and Jessica being elsewhere, and Josh either being dead or abducted. Assuming, of course, they're still alive.
- The Hero: Sam. The calm, rational one who makes most of the decisions.
- The Lancer: Mike. His go-it-alone attitude and Hot-Blooded nature contrast with Sam's more logical gentleness, but he gets a lot of results and works with Sam in the end.
- The Smart Guy: Emily. Her 4.0, bitch chops are demonstrated in her escape from the mines.
- The Big Guy: Chris. He's taller than Mike, and the only other person other than Mike or Sam who goes toe-to-toe with Wendigos
- The Chick: Ashley. Meek, sweet, and the only one willing to go and find Jessica, although it's a Wendigo trick.
Had to re-delete the Game Grumps example. Left a note this time to not re-add it.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?If it's the same person it should be reported to Ask The Tropers.
I can't check if it's the same person because Firefox is shit and crashes every time the extended edit history is opened.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? That's a long history but it did open in my Firefox. The accounts responsible for readding it (in chronological order) are ~Saurous, ~animefan2007 and ~animefan09 which don't look like sockpuppets to me (and none is suspended right now).
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDeleted this from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
- Five Bad Band: Master Xehanort creates one with the allies he recruits from different worlds:
- Big Bad/The Evil Genius: Master Xehanort
- The Dragon: Vanitas
- The Brute: Braig
- The Dark Chick: Maleficent
- The Sixth Ranger: Pete, although we see how he came to be Maleficent's henchman.
I believe I came across a really bad mis-used of Five Bad Band and Five-Man Band. I want to know if this is remotely salvageable or should I just erase.
- Five Bad Band:
- Freeza's Forces:
- The Big Bad: Freeza
- The Dragon: Zarbon
- The Evil Genius: Appule
- The Brute: Dodoria
- The Dark Chick: Kewie
- Sixth Ranger Traitor: Vegeta
- The Ginyu Special Force:
- The Big Bad: Captain Ginyu
- The Dragon: Jheese
- The Evil Genius: Butta
- The Brute: Rea Coom
- The Dark Chick: Ghurd
- Babidi's Forces:
- The Big Bad: Babidi
- The Dragon: Majin Boo
- The Evil Genius: Dabura
- The Brute: Yakon
- The Dark Chick: Puipui
- Sixth Ranger Traitor: Majin Vegeta
- Five-Man Band:
- The Z Warriors (Vegeta Saga):
- The Hero: Goku
- The Lancer: Yajirobe
- The Smart Guy: Gohan
- The Big Guy: Piccolo
- The Heart: Kuririn
- Sixth Ranger: Yamcha, Tenshinhan and Chaozu
- Z Warriors (Freeza Saga):
- The Hero: Goku
- The Lancer: Vegeta
- The Smart Guy: Gohan
- The Big Guy: Piccolo
- The Heart: Kuririn
- Z Warriors (Cell Saga):
- The Hero: Goku
- The Lancer: Vegeta
- The Smart Guy: Gohan
- The Big Guy: Piccolo
- The Heart: Kuririn
- Sixth Ranger: Future Trunks
- Z Warriors (Majin Boo Saga):
- The Hero: Goku
- The Lancer: Vegeta
- The Smart Guy: Gohan
- The Big Guy: Piccolo
- The Heart: Kuririn
- Tagalong Kid: Trunks and Goten
- Sixth Ranger: Gotenks and Vegetto
That is really bad. All of it is bad. Delete it as soon as you can.
Except for the Ginyu Force example.
Inexplicable spellings aside, that's a legitimate example.
- The Big Bad: Ginyu (the team is named for him, after all).
- The Dragon: Jeice (he's the one who basically function as Ginyu's second and winds up fighting more than Ginyu)
- The Brute: Raccoom (He... really just is)
- T He Evil Genius: Burter (this is the weakest link, but he notably is the only fighter to rely on anything but power and when they act together is usually the tactician).
- The Dark Chick: Guildo (he's a powerful psychic on a team of bruisers).
Everything else is amazingly bad.

Bigotry in the name of inclusion is still bigotry.Thank you. Will make the proper edits.
I'd like to nominate these examples from Starcraft II. The current page lists Wings of Liberty, but as it has two people sharing The Smart Guy, I'm not sure if it qualifies or not. The other two games in the trilogy, though, their heroes fit the dynamic much easier.
Heart of the Swarm
- The Leader: Kerrigan, the leader of the Swarm.
- The Lancer: Zagara, Kerrigan's first Broodmother conscripted and bred to take over the Swarm one day.
- The Big Guy: Dehaka, a primal Zerg with no psionic powers but considerable brute strength.
- The Smart Guy: Abathur, biologist in charge of engineering the Swarm's evolutions.
- The Chick: Izsha, the adjutant-equivalent through which Kerrigan speaks to the rest of the Swarm and receives advice on reuniting them and understanding them.
- The Sixth Ranger: Alexei Stukov, not a part of the Swarm but an outsider ally to Kerrigan who commands his own forces.
Legacy of the Void
- The Leader: Artanis, Hierarch of the Daelaam, the unified protoss.
- The Lancer: Vorazun, Matriarch of the Dark Templar and Artanis' foil in political debates.
- The Big Guy: Alarak, violent Blood Knight who prefers the direct and violent way to end problems.
- The Smart Guy: Karax, the phase-smith who oversees the ship's systems, and gives Artanis objectives to boost its power.
- The Chick: Rohana, deeply rooted in the traditions and memories of her people, and usually advises Artanis to stick to them as well.
- The Sixth Ranger: "Fenix," an outsider due to being a robot that is distrusted by the others, and the only one not a true protoss.
Does Star Wars have a Five Bad Band at all? Several are listed on Five Bad Band/Film but none of them look any good.
Deleted from Kingdom Hearts.
- Five Bad Band: The Disney villains form one:
- Big Bad - Maleficent.
- The Dragon - Captain Hook.
- The Brute - Oogie Boogie.
- The Evil Genius - Jafar.
- The Dark Chick - Ursula.
- Sixth Ranger - Riku.
- Sixth Ranger Traitor - Hades.
- The Man Behind the Man - Xehanort's Heartless.
Also deleted this from Kingdom Hearts: Disney Villains.
- Five Bad Band: During the first game, they roughly correlate to one.
- Big Bad: Maleficent
- The Dragon: Jafar, then Hook, then Riku. Pete is an off-screen example during the first game.
- The Brute: Oogie Boogie, the least intelligent of the bunch.
- The Evil Genius: Ursula, though Jafar also counts.
- Sixth Ranger Traitor: Hades, who pretty casually abandons the villains and takes matters into his own hands upon Maleficent's defeat.
- Tagalong Kid: Riku at first.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? The Star Wars examples look like a bad case of shoehorning to me. You'd need to be a hardcore fan to even know who some of those characters are.
The Star Craft ones look alright, but remove the Sixth Ranger because it's not part of the band.
Legacy of the Void fits. I'm not as sold on the first example, though.
Also, I have to wonder - how many examples of Five Bad Band actually exist? Sometimes it feels like it's more a construct of this site than a real trope in media, particularly given how fuzzily The Dark Chick (the only member role that isn't common in general villain groups) is defined.

That... is a very good point, honestly. Mentally replacing "The Dark Chick" with "The weird one" does seem to work for me, at least.
Yeah, there was some discussion on the A New Hope example on the discussion page. It was still tremendous shoehorning.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I also agree. Perhaps an attempt at a trope Evil Counterpart gone horribly wrong?
since the original trope has Gone Horribly Wrong, How Could This POSSIBLY Happen? /s Yeah, the original trope is locked and being cleaned, so this one may need the same treatment.

Seconded.
