Game thread.

Discussion.

This has been on my mind for the past couple of hours and I thought, Might as well give it a try! So here is to hoping this attracts interest!

Elves Versus Dwarves, Magic Versus Science. We've all seen these play out if many a story before. Here is something that happens after those events.

Magic fought Science and lost. Elves and Dwarves and everyone else put aside their differences only to both get defeated. In fact, a lot of races fell before the might of the technological advanced humans from across the great ocean.

That was 70 years ago, when the last of the non-human mystical kingdoms submitted the human nation of Unidos. Eager to exploit the vast new continent, the humans began colonizing and shaping the land in their image. The "primitive" and "lesser races" were now subjugated people. Unidos rule was harsh. All but the most basic of magic was outlawed. Spell books were all burned and treasure troves of knowledge was lost forever. The non-humans had to learn human tongue at the expense of their native language. Everyone had to have a human last name. Culture; art, music, stories, these were all suppressed or outright forbidden. Those who could attend school only learned what Unidos let them, not the history of their own peoples. Dissent was brutally put down. Gradually, the non-humans lost much of what had made them unique. In place, their status and treatment as second class citizens merged them all together into a new, if downtrodden, culture.

Nowadays, human colonists live in splendor, while the non-humans carry out most of the blue-collar jobs such as factory work, service work, mining, menial labor. Change, is in the air however. News that Unidos has bitten off more than it can chew have reached the colonies, the amount of soldiers that normally are around has been reduced. The people are tired of low wages, poor housing, unequal treatment. Leaders among the non-humans have arisen, with grand ideas and even grander words. Some call for reform, others call for revolution. What about you?

Alright, now that that's out of the way, here's whats up. You are on of the human or non-human residence of Saturn City, the huge and bustling metropolis founded by the Unidos human colonists (on top of what used to be an elf city). The setting is roughly early 1900's. You have electricity and radio. There are blimps and planes. OSHA? Whats that?

Tensions are beginning to run high. Something is about to go down. Whether its peaceful or not is up to what your characters do. Despite the name, not everyone is a sorcerer. That usually requires an education. An education probably done in secret. And not every Revolution has to be violent. Tradition dictates you all start at a pub, so that's where our story begins, with dissatisfied non-humans and maybe a rich human sympathizer or two, gathered at the local bar to hear the movers and shakers say their piece. From there you can decide what your character will do, and what they do will have consequences for all of you. Think well before you speak. Or not. Whichever works best for you!

Interested. Probably going to wind up a rich human sympathizer. Though...what are the limits of magic within the setting?

[up][up] As a starting point, yes.

[up]Magic can be learned by anyone and everyone, but it takes a lot of practice and training. The older you are before you start the harder it becomes to learn. Spells branch off from each other into different types and build upon each other, to learn more advance spells you have to know the lesser ones too. This pretty much requires a teacher or textbook, probably both, and constant training.

Are there Half-Human Hybrid types? Given the speciesism/classism thing going on I figured I would ask.

[up]Humans.

  • Name: Illtyd ap Gwythyr [Illtyd Jones]
  • Species: Elf
  • Sex: Male
  • Age: 35
  • Appearance: Young, Short, Long Dark Brown Hair, Green Eyes, which he can use to conceal his ears in need though anyone looking close could still see he is an elf. He has a short scar on his right cheek near his ear, a few more on his arm. Not very obvious but those looking could identify him with it.
  • Occupation: Smuggler, occaisionally thief and other "Odd Jobs of Questionable Legallity". Skilled with easily concealed weapons, such as daggers and revovlers. He is skilled with the bow as well, cherishing it as an ancestral weapon but given it's rather obvious nature, finds little opportunity to use it.
  • History: Illtyd makes his home in the more mountainous regions near the Dwarves where there was a long standing ancestral rivalry, awkwardly quelled by truce and now mutual oppression. Illtyd joined in several Elvish resistance cells from a young age, he's floated between legitimate freedom fighter and when times were tougher, humble thief and criminal. During those tough times, to deal with how low he and his people sank, he turned to the bottle. Previously a light weight, he's developed quite a metabolism for an elf. Presently, he's looking back at resistance work as the Human presence fades and resistance is picking up but he's spent the last few as little more than a petty criminal, usually aiming at Humans but generally doing whatever he needed to get by.
  • Why are you at the pub? Alcoholic.

Name: Rudolph Sipher

Species: Human

Sex: Male

Age: 18

Appearance: Young, medium height with medium length black hair and brown eyes, pale skinned.

Occupation:Student, Non-human sympathizer and apprentice sorceror.

History: The child of a wealthy human family who found it hard to view non-humans as anything but a different sort of person and was often confused and disgusted by the unfair treatment they recieved. He had access to several tomes of magic that his family had stolen during the process of purging magical knowledge and passed down as curiosities and "trophies" of sorts. He eventually managed to find a teacher as well a few years ago, though looking nearly cost him his head a few times due to his previously naive and careless manner.

Why are you at the pub? Trying to find out more about the growing non-human political movements.

[up][up][up][up] Sure.

Nuts I totally forgot about races.

THE LIST OF PLAYABLE RACES!

Here is a list of all the peoples of the continent.

Human: You already know what these are. These guys are the rich privileged elite, unless you're a soldier who go sent here, in which case you probably aren't rich. Businessmen, landowners, teachers, doctors, police officers, lawyers, government official and stuff like that make up these people.

Elf: The longest living and most graceful of species. Tall, pointy ears, the usual. There's a good chance you might have been around to remember the pre-human days and still know magic. Your people are used to fresh and clean air and have an affinity for nature. The city isn't good for you well-being really, but a job is a job.

Dwarf: Stout and strong. Dwarves are probably the most common race found in the city. They are the most like humans and have adapted better then most to the human cities. an exceptionally tall one might even pass as a short human.

Goblin: Short and scaly. Nimble little green or gray guys with big eyes. They used to live in the darkest places of the continent until the humans uprooted them. Now they inhabit the lower portions of the city. Being the farthest from human, they tend to get the short end of the stick in just about everything.

Orc: Larger and stronger then the others mentioned. The muscular and tusk toothed orcs held out the longest against the humans, and had to travel farthest to get to the city looking for work. Surprisingly music inclined.

Centaur: Formally tribal people who roamed the plains. These half-man half-horse people face more discrimination than most since their body structure isn't well suited for how humans build everything. As a result, they mostly work outdoors. Non-human structures try to go out of their way to make things easier for their four legged comrades.

Minotaur: The other large species living in Saturn City. These guys actually come from a nearby island and mostly work on the docks. Despite their fearsome appearance and general low patience, they are entirely vegetarian.

THE LIST OF NON PLAYABLE RACES!

These guys appear in the story but for now at least, I'm not letting anyone play as them.

Dryad: Elemental wood people who live in trees. City life is almost fatal for them outside the local parks. Humans actually consider them more pest than people.

Dragon: Large winged reptiles who breath fire. They are on the other side of the continent and have no effect on this current story.

Fey/Fairy: These guys don't actually appear. The Fair Folk. Their weird ways, great powers and Blue-and-Orange Morality made them more trouble then they were worth and the humans wiped them all out decades ago.

Name: Derrick Allister

Species: Half-Orc

Sex: Male

Age: 32

Appearance: Here

Occupation: Factory manager

History: Born in a small village from a human father and an orc mother, Derrick was an abomination in the eyes of the other villagers, and his parents were equally despised for marrying. Despite the endless torment and bullying he received throughout his childhood, Derrick never resorted to violence or revenge, and he quickly conformed to human social behavior. Eventually, other humans recognized his good behavior and willingness to learn, so he was allowed to attend school at a very early age, where he received a modest education, though he still received no end of bullying and mistreatment by the human students and staff.

Eventually, Derrick left the village and boarded a train to Saturn City in search of new opportunities. Despite his credentials, Derrick was turned down from most jobs due to his race, except for a managerial position at one of Saturn City's many factories. Though his job was relatively comfortable and his staff were cooperative, he noticed that most of the employees at the factory were practically slaves, working incredibly long shifts in dangerous and filthy conditions for barely any money. When he informed the factory owner about this, he was immediately fired. Fearing the worst for his career, Derrick began gambling and smoking tobacco.

Why are you at the pub?: Depressed about getting fired.

Perhaps. Still sounds painful and probably involves birth complications unless the mother is a centaur instead of the father being the centaur.

I figure you can either make the mother a Centaur or, if you want to sadden your back story have the human mother die in childbirth.

On a seperate issue are there alchemists or were they purged too?
