So I now have an ultimatum: I have a month to find a job or I'm getting kicked out of the house. This is 100% not a joke. Brilliant. I am now basically structuring my entire life around applying for as many jobs as possible, and per some rough math, I'm hoping I can manage around 2000 applications by the end of the month, which based on my own understanding of things gives me a decent shot at getting like a single in person interview because fuck my life. I honestly don't know what I'll do if this doesn't work, which it probably won't because I can't see anything good ever happening to me. So you probably won't see me around tvtropes for like a month. If ever again.

That's the problem.... knowhere wants to hire someone who doesn't have years of fucking shelf stacking expirence or answering phones and asking "have you tried turning it off and on again?", or my personal favourite, wanting several years expirence with software that has not even been out that long! it's just a load of fucking bullshit these days.... I'm lucky in that my parents know how hard it can be, what with them going into the job market in the 80's at the height of Thatcher, and things right now are even worse job wise...

I just found some new options for jobs. Among them are working at either Del Taco, Sonic, or a Food Service Worker at my local school district.

School districts are more likely to be unionized, with both the good and bad sides of that.

Need an opinion folks.

I may be having to work for a NGO since it's the only choice I got to build up work experience or work in a company that handles lottery (aside from my dad managing most of it) and risk being called out for nepotism. That and the majority of my university studies (Pol Sci) is not suited for it IMO.

[up] If you're looking for opinions, what does your family think would be a good idea?

IMHO, the lottery job might be an issue down the road. Like, if you put that job on the resume, a future employer might point out the possible nepotism and challenge you to defend yourself. OTOH, I'm assuming the NGO offers less money?

Maybe. I've sent in an email ahead to see if they provide some form of allowance.

My older brother mentioned working with the lottery company. My old man said that he doesn't mind me building my own career... I was only concerned with how to survive if my folks pass away and stuff. I mean, I got enough money to survive for a few months, but not forever.

Update.

Seems that there's no suitable job except to work with a NGO as a volunteer with possibly no to little pay. I'll need to make a call.

Called in with said local NGO. No allowance/salary for obvious reasons, but they were helpful enough for me to talk to someone in case I want to volunteer with their main office.

Looks like I could work with a local NGO as a volunteer to get more work experience. Not sure if it'll be with or with no allowance.

Okay, so I tried applying for a job at Guitar Center online. After a few days of waiting for a call back, I decided to call them to let them know I applied. The guy that picked up told me they hadn't even gotten my application (somehow...). So he said he'd look for it and call me back. He never did. A few days later, i called again, wondering if I missed the call. The lady I talked to said I needed to speak with the manager, who was on break at the time, and that she'd give him my number so he could get back to me. He never did.

And that brings us to right now. My mom says the next step is to go there in person, but honestly I'm wondering if I should just move on. All signs are pointing to them just not being interested in hiring me, and if that's the case I don't know why they don't just tell me that instead of leaving me hanging like this.

I genuinely have no idea what to do at this point.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

[up]At the very least you can make them say it to your face. Besides, maybe actually going in person will convince them that you really, really want a job there.

So apparently all the positions at that Guitar Center are apparently filled. And that was pretty much my last hope as far as finding work goes, since literally everyone else wants experience or people that can drive (i.e. not me), and the only ones that don't are shady sales rep jobs.

Fuck my life.

Looks like that NGO interview went well. Seems that they have no problem taking me without pay to help in social media enterprise aka writing up story/help to get stories up and out to social media so that peeps know what said NGO is doing.

Of course, I need to be present in one of their events.

Of course now I need to worry about potentially working under my father's lotto company and do clerical work.

I don't know if I can rack up some work experience and progress from there. I'm not planning to stay there forever. Considering the majority of my BA work.

[up] Good idea! It gets you seen in your town, looks good on resumes, and you can often get personal references out of it.

[up][up] Both companies got back to the temp agency by end of day. One said I interviewed very well but I wasn't quite the right fit for their department, so they were checking with another area of their company they thought I'd be more compatible with to see if any openings were available there. The second company extended an offer of employment pending a background check! [awesome]

Looks like I could work with that NGO as an intern with social media enterprising. Kinda looked around the net that someone with pol sci experience is a good fit for it.

Don't know how long is the wait since it got passed to someone else. Dammit. tongue

Looks like it's gonna work out. For now, this'll be my job to build up more work experience...

Hope it's not too late to get a good job in my 30s since my first job failure... Which I still don't know if it was report writing or something else that led to my dismissal and end of my probationary contract.

Still waiting for that background check to clear, getting very nervous. I have stuff to do Thursday and Friday, but I can't schedule it until I know if I need to go somewhere to be eligible for work.

is there much that is more depressing than rejection letters for what claim not to be but are part time jobs that you're overqualified for?
