Surprised no topic has been made for this, but anyway...

Sleeping dogs is a 3rd person Sandbox Game set in the streets of Hong Kong, where you play undercover police officer Wei Shen as he infiltrates the Triads, who control the city, and eventually take down the Dragon Head, leader of the Triads.

While there are 3ps elements, the main focus is on the fist-fights, which promise a lot of depth and the ability to use the environment to your advantage.

It comes out in August, and Here's a preview.

My friend said that this was originally going to be the next Tue Crime game, but Square-Enix changed the name for some reason. I doubt he had a good source on that, but I wouldn't be surprised.

They changed the name because they didn't get the naming rights from Activision when the buy the game...that's why it has the current name, not True Crime: Hong Kong...

Actually the game was originally it's own thing, then Activision wanted to cram it into the True Crime series and jammed the title on, and then Activision sold it and it's back to it's own thing again.

Anyway the game looks like a Yakuza ripoff, which I honestly don't mind since I love that series.

well, it no longer goes by that name, so the "true crime" label is rather meaningless?

I guess I should've known to look for it under that title, but I'd've just ended up requesting a name change to the topic to make it conform with the actual game name.

Nah I'd say it's better to stick with this thread since it has the actual title for the game.

Made a page for this, though I haven't indexed it yet - till then the wiki can't tell the difference between this and the 1977 movie of the same name in the Main namespace.

The game looks fun, I just hope the release model is more stable. I mean half the fun of an open world is the world, won't really work if it's constantly loading the world.

Well, the game released. Played the first mission, and gotta say, I really love the combat. Any game that takes a leaf out of Arkham Asylum/Arkham City for its melee combat has the right idea.

How's the gunplay feel? And the driving?

My big problem with almost all 3rd person games is that the guns are piddly. Like shooting someone with darts. Darts hurt like hell, but they don't kill unless you hit someone a lot of times. But from the sound of it, the focus is on the fist-fighting, so maybe I can forgive the shooting if it isn't in the top 10.

And I ask about the driving because ever since the level of control I had in GTA 4, I've not liked almost any other open world game involving driving fast. Is there a good deal of control, or a good deal of feeling like you're in control? Are you able to control well when turning while going fast?

Haven't gotten to any gunplay. I found the driving took a bit of getting used to - failed the first vehicle chase mission several times, but I think I got the hang of it. Ramming cars off the road is fun, in any case.

Turning while going fast, however, eheheheheheh no.

how bad? like, no 90 degree turns, or just instant chaos whenever not going straight?

Damn, I kinda wish this game has sucked so I could make a "they should've let Sleeping Dogs lie" joke.

Totalbiscuit compared the driving system to that in NFS because the dev team apparently had some folks from that series working on the vehicles.

Regarding guns, during the gunplay intro mission that TB showed he was able to 1HKO enemies with headshots. The game also does explain that guns are rare in Hong Kong, which reflects Real Life. Actual gunplay is mostly TPS style with the customary cover system and Bullet Time.

Well, I got the game and played for a few hours. It've VERY good, and the PC port is solidly playable and customizable. Also, it's actually getting good post-release support from the devs.

Just finished the game. It's STILL very good, some well executed drama in the late-game and all that. I managed to finish it in 24 hours while doing some side stuff, resulting in just over 50% of the game done. The story was pretty good all around.

Just got this earlier, still in the early part of the game though (I still haven't seen some of the characters, for example). And because I also have Just Cause 2 I got a bonus outfit lol.

They should have never included guns in the game. All martial arts would have been great.

Anyone run into any amusing glitches in this game? I'd say it's inevitable in a game like this, so there's always the likelihood of at least one silly thing happening in game. Like when a guy clips into a car and stands there.

DLC coming throughout October

The extra missions obviously look more worthwhile than some skins.

I'm playing the newest Halloween DLC right now, and it's so HYPE!

I just finished this game. It's one of those games that I wish were a movie instead, though.

Also, Jackie Ma is the best character.
