The lone Wanderer meets a long lost frined...

So you have two characters who for whatever reason have been close friends/partners for a while (A Band of Brothers, Fire-Forged Friends— possibly to the point of blood brothers). Inevitably, life took it's turns, and theyve gone on in different directions, possibly even, to different sides in a conflict.

Years later, one of these characters regains contact. Maybe he or she is now in a group that has no idea about the other characters existence, so the form of contact is a surprise to everyone else...

How would you re-establish contact in a touchy situation like that? Make a poem or a riddle only they could solve? A special saying they used to have when they still worked together? Somehow seperate the group so you can talk under four eyes?

Take 'I Robot' for a very elaborate example, in this case, the proffessor knew Will Smiths character as one of the few people who both distrusted robots enough and knew him personally, and so go far enough to follow his trail of clues. Though in this case it was after his death, in the form of a hologram.

Just them seeing you is a possibility. Go to a hang out, make sure friend notices you, act like you don't notice, start from there. Maybe?

I think a riddle might be a bit much. I'd probably try to separate them so we could talk privately, either by sending a message asking to meet, or if that wasn't an option by posing as a stranger with an excuse to talk privately that would fool their companions, but not them.

Of course depending on the situation the simple solution might be best, just going up to them and saying hi like an old friend would, and changing the subject if the matter of allegiances comes up in company.
