Star Fox / Metroid Crossover:

Okay, there's a couple articles on it, such as this one. Supposedly, Star Fox and Metroid will get a crossover, via Retro Studios. Retro is said to have tossed around an idea involving either space battles or on-foot exploration, and Nintendo said to go ahead and mix the two, combining Star Fox and Metroid. The game is said to have different gameplay styles depending on which side you're playing as at the moment.

I can imagine that happening if Nintendo is creative enough to allow for that kind of crossover. I hope they are; it may not be a new franchise, but it's a new idea, and I think the industry certainly needs more of that now.

[up]They allowed the Smash Bros series to come to fruition and that even had a character from another non-exclusive company in it (Solid Snake), so what's stopping them from combining franchises that are in-house?

Would you believe I never fully watched the original Indiana Jones trilogy? I gotta correct that someday.

It would be interesting if, in the Metroid style gameplay, different characters had different abilities. Samus would have her standard set. Fox would have his reflector. Falco could double jump. Stuff that would change the progression for different characters.

That sounds less awesome in type than it did in my head.

I... do not think these two game styles would mesh well. Both have different takes on different universes, have different atmospheres, and generally play really different.

I think at best, a Starfox game somewhat in the vein of Metroid Prime would work. But not really the other way around, and definitely not together.

Just a rumor for now it looks like, but, interesting thoughts I guess.

Then again, just a Starfox game in the vein of Metroid Prime would still be pretty great. I just want to play as Falco.

Retro studios has done a good job with the properties they were given in the past, so I believe it's in good hands!

[up][up]And Starfox could really use a lot more lore. Metroid Prime's lore exploded for the better. Star Fox could really use something like that, give it some consistency and story.

I wouldn't mind seeing Andross infected with Metroid phazon DNA shit or something.

While I would really like to play the earlier Star Fox and Metroid Prime games, I honestly wasn't at all impressed with either Metroid Prime: Corruption (the motion controls... ugh) or Star Fox: Assault (the mission on the space station... also ugh). So here's me hoping that, if this game is for real, it's not like either of those games.

The earlier Metroid Primes didn't have any motion controls.
The earlier Star Fox games were a completely different genre.

Which is exactly why I want to play them.

Although Corruption didn't really have that much in the way of motion controls. Just light gun controls with the occasional wrist flick or twist.

But they still sucked just like those of seemingly every other Wii FPS that came out before The Conduit. Fully customizable controls should be a standard for Wii FPS's in my opinion.

Rather, Assault had levels that were just like 64, and then it also had levels where you were on foot. I'll never quite understand the hate for Assault.

How about like this: Multiple planets. You land on a planet, it plays like Metroid Prime. You head to the next planet it's like Starfox.
Don't you try anything, you baked good you.

The on-foot thing messed it up for me. Specifically, the space station level frustrated and confused me to the point that I just gave up entirely.

[up]Anyways, I think that would probably be a pretty interesting idea.

Do keep in mind that this is just a rumor thus far, so don't go getting too excited just yet.

I don't really think that would work since 1) Some people don't like both gameplay styles 2) It would be kind of like Star Fox adventure, aka time on planets would outweight traveling between planets.

Also, Star Fox and Metroid cross over is kind of silly. Heck, F-Zero cross over with either of them sounds more logical.

I'd love to see anything Star Fox other than another 64 remake. Especially if by Retro Studios, they have a great track records so far.

@ Spooky: Funny that you should mention F-Zero since Miyamoto said that Nintendo had tried to do a Star Fox/F-Zero collaboration in the past and was greatly interested by the prospect, but simply couldn't make it work.

James McCloud (sort of) is a racer in an F-Zero game, and one ending of Command has Fox and Falco join a "G-Zero" racing circuit, modifying their Arwings into racing vehicles.

The blue falcon and golden fox racing against the Blue Falcon and Golden Fox? Ya, I could definitely see the appeal.

I was actually talking in thematical sense. F-Zero is campy enough to fit with Star Fox(biggest problem with later star fox games is how they've tried to do games more serious. Nothing wrong with that since I actually like that, but they have executed it rather badly), but visually serious enough to fit with Metroid. Metroid and Star Fox? Well, I guess if you look it in certain way it would be possible, but still.

[up][up][up] I'm aware of that, but those are nothing more than throwaway nods that are present in several Nintendo games. And the G-Zero thing in Command was just the James McCloud and Galaxy Dog homage in F-Zero coming full circle.

Judging by Miyamoto's words, it sounds like they had trouble making the gameplay work.

I would much rather Retro just make a balls out new Star Fox, no wacky crossover shit. Or Donkey Kong Country Returns 2: Return Harder: The Returnening.
