Either of those are good...I lean toward the first just because the meanness has a touch more context, but the graininess bugs me.
I prefer Mittens to Garfield, myself.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!I think that Tom and Jerry is full of instances that would make a good image for this trope. I think this video alone has several potential page images in it.
He reminds me more of a wolf than of a cat in that clip. Especially since he's big enough to literally hold a mouse in the palm of his hand. o.o
Actually, something similar is also part of why I prefer Mittens to Garfield; it is more immediately obvious that Mittens is a cat than that Garfield is. (Barring familiarity with the Garfield series, which is irrelevant as far as page images go anyway.)

"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartAside from the fact that Garfied is insanely famous, almost to the level of Bugs Bunny and Micky Mouse, he looks very much like any other cartoon Funny Animal cat. I don't think anyone will get confused about what he is, especially in the context of being the trope image for Cats Are Mean. You are not giving enough credit to our readers.

Fair enough, then.
Should we set up a crowner?
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartBlank crowner's hooked.
Um, I guess there was a crowner for this last time and that got hooked instead. Could we make a new one with a slightly different name?
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Hooked for real this time.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerThanks for catching that. The Mittens pic is just too dark and fuzzy for my liking...unlike an actual cat like that, that'd be great.
Well, Garfield #2 seems to be winning. I say we may as well call it.
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartHasn't it only been a day? And this is a weekend, holiday weekend, no less. No hurry.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. It's been another day, and now it's 12 votes in the lead.
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartThis one's ready to go. The new pic's up, potholed, and tagged. Caption or no?
Garfield giving Odie the "BOOT!"
Moon◊That's a bit too lame a pun IMO, and feels kind of redundant with the pic itself. Besides, Garfield isn't even wearing a boot.
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartI like it, with a pothole to Unsound Effect.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. Not really feeling it, honestly.
I'm not a fan of Captain Obvious captions, really.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Garfield goes for the field goal?
Going for the (Gar)field goal?
I dunno, I can't think of anything that isn't a really really weak pun.
Moon◊Eh, le'ts just run without; someone can add one later if they come up with something clever. Locking up.
Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:
Well, here are cropped versions of two of the options, then...
Personally, I think one problem with both of these is that Garfield's appearance doesn't seem to immediately give off the "cat" impression, at least not without some other familiarity with the character. That's another area in which I think the Mittens one last page has an advantage.
