Since Danbooru has come up on the queue, I'd like to request some feedback on it.

Danbooru isn't a fictional work itself, but more of a repository of works in the form of Fanart. By my estimation, most of the trope entries listed on the page are either mis-used or not really relevant for our purposes.

This seems to me like a page that should get the Literotica treatment of a trope-sectionectomy and subsequent locking. Any thoughts on this suggestion, for or against?

I'm going to assume this is open to all: if not, let me know, and apologies.

I'd support the idea of an Example Sectionectomy:
  • It's not really a work and the images don't really have anything worth discussing trope-wise (I assume this is why we don't discuss classical art on TV Tropes either);
  • The image tag trope references are an interesting bit of trivia but not very relevant;
  • The issue with links has always been with the NSFW ads - the site contains both SFW and NSFW images and isn't a search engine for porn.

...I'm not even sure if it's the job of 5P to be looking at this, TBH. Just my opinion.

Not a substitute for a formal medical consultation.
The "Tropes that apply to the site" part of the article looks okay, but if we decide to remove it, it's not a big loss. The tropes below can go either way, then lock.

It is. If we want to limit a discussion to just the panel, we will put "(P5/5P) only" in the thread title. Thanks for your input!

I will be watching this discussion with interest, as I am the maintainer of the Life of Maid page on this wiki, and a lot of Touhou and Madoka doujin recs on the Fanfic Recs pages in general have come from that site. As for my ideal tack for dealing with this site, I'd like to keep any pool links for works as long as the works themselves are not violative of policy, but not link directly to image pages (as those are the ones that generally have the NSFW ad content), instead linking to their equivalent pages on Safebooru (which does not host NSFW images) if they have them.

I apologize if I'm misunderstanding your post, but this doesn't really have anything to do with the use of Danbooru pool links on other work/trope pages. This is just a question of how to handle the Main.Danbooru page itself.

Not a bug!
I believe it's relevant because under the current policy, those examples automatically get cut if the Danbooru page gets cut.

Agreeing with Pyrite that it's not a concern of 5P — it's not a porn repository, after all.

Perhaps move it to TRS?

It isn't just a porn repository, but it is an image repository with an awful lot of porn on it. Not quite as readily available as gelbooru or something, but it's still there.

[up] Our criteria doesn't care if there is some explicit content on it. Our criteria is concerned with, "Is it entirely porn?" In this case the answer is no.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

While it's true that Danbooru isn't solely porn, there is enough of it that I felt a trope section-ectomy and lock following the precedent set by Literotica would be an appropriate decision for the panel to make.

I can see the other side of the argument, though, and if the other members of the panel feel that this would be better handled in TRS, I'll abide by their decision.

Plus, it's a longstanding wiki rule that we can't link to Danbooru because of all the NSFW ads, so even if the content was completely clean...
What's precedent ever done for us?

Linking to Danbooru and having a page on it are not the same thing. It's a useful thing for us to define as a content host. I just don't think it needs tropes or links.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

I see no problem with a stub-lock. The top part of the page looks clean, and the tropes and such can be cut without any real loss.

Supporting making it example-less. Having tropes for it never served any purpose.

I don't really see why we need tropes for any specific online community like some of the entries for "tropes applying to the site". And tropes for any specific artwork hosted there, well, Danbooru didn't produce that artwork, it's just a repository. The actual artwork there can be covered under artist pages or something.
Let's ignore the NSW content and ads for a moment:

It's an image uploading and sharing site. Why should we have it on TV Tropes? It has no original content in and of itself. You could make a reasonable argument for trope pages on content that happens to be on Danbooru, but not for Danbooru itself. I mean, most of that page is just a list of tags Danbooru has. It's ridiculously unnecessary.

Add in the NSW stuff and you got a serious argument in favor of deleting it entirely.
The Fastest Man Alive
We also have pages on Youtube, Deviantart, and Literotica. Being an image posting site is not grounds for cutting.

I'm all for the example sectionectomy.

Literotica is also NSFW, but was given an Example Sectionectomy. Both Danbooru and Literotica host similar content. And we also have Pixiv, which hosts SFW and NSFW content, and is an image sharing site like Danbooru. Not sure how much of Pixiv is SFW and NSFW though.

[up]About the same, I think. A lot of Danbooru's content came from Pixiv in the first place.

[up][up] Note: ~10% of Danbooru content is explicit, ~20% is questionable. Rounding up, maybe not counting hidden (loli/shota) and deleted art (which barely scrap 2% altogether).

[down] Similar in what sense? Sankaku has 36K/10K/17K of safe/questionable/explicit art. Which is quite a lot more of explicity than Danbooru.

edited 4th May '12 9:59:05 PM by OneMore

If the content is comparable to that of the Sankakucomplex imageserver, wouldn't a similar solution be indicated?
I would not mind this being cut (or Youtube, and similar articles), but that reads like preparing for a different conversation. So, edit and lock.
What I mean is that regardless of the actual severity or the ratios themselves, both servers host SWF as well as NSFW images. If we've already allowed Sankakucomplex a stub page, Danbooru would need to be different in a substantial way to warrant a different treatment.
