Gor - 5P Only:

So...we voted porn, all three of us. Do we want to cut it, or keep a locked stub page on why it's such an awful work and gets referenced so much? I'm kinda leaning towards cut, but I wanted to know what you guys think.

Personally, I'm for cutting it. From what I've heard of it, it doesn't seem to be anything more than BDSM porn.
FYI, I didn't vote on that one yet. Either Catalogue got it before he went MIA, or Fast Eddie voted.

That being said, I agree its porn. But it should probably get a locked stub due to being Porn with Plot Cult Classic.

Okay, so far we have two for cutting completely, one for keeping the stub. Let's see what Meeble has to say.

New shit has come to light. I'm now swinging closer to "keep but lock." Let's give this one some time, I have to look at some things and talk to some people. There's a lot of ins and outs, a lot of what-have-yous.

My initial research on this series has me leaning towards the "clean and lock" option. While there does seem to be a good bit of porn in this series, it's spawned a couple of non-porn adaptations and seems to have had some influence on pop culture.

I am interested in hearing about this "new shit" Martello found out, though.

It's a The Big Lebowski reference. What I mean is that I've learned that apparently the first few books in the series weren't actually porn, just bad fantasy with very questionable themes of male and female interaction. It bears further research, which I'm going to do over the next few days.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. If the Anita Blake and Dune series have taught me anything, it's that speculative fiction authors have a tendency to let their series devolve into bizarre fetish porn after their first successful entries.

edit: speaking of which, I'm noticing that Anita Blake (while it shouldn't be cut, in my opinion) could really use a good scrubbing. I made a mention of it in the Special Efforts thread.

Hm, interesting. So, this work isn't totally pornographic?
Shima said something in another thread about the first few books being pretty much porn-free, and it just spiraled out from there.

Either way, I'd prefer to get rid of that quote. It's demonstrative, yes, but...c'mon.

My impression is the questionable content is pretty much the whole point, intentionally or otherwise. The only thing keeping me back here is, assuming that assumption is not a mile off the mark, is its notability. Not that notable works are exempt, but there's a possibility that notable works have something else going on in it.

I have no access to the material, unfortunately... Any advice?

The Wikipedia page has this to say:

"The Gor novels have been criticized for their focus on relationships between dominant men and submissive women, the latter often in positions of slavery. The Encyclopedia of Fantasy says, "later volumes degenerate into extremely sexist, sadomasochistic pornography involving the ritual humiliation of women, and as a result have caused widespread offence." Science fiction/fantasy author Michael Moorcock has suggested that the Gor novels should be placed on the top shelves of bookstores, saying, "Iím not for censorship but I am for strategies which marginalize stuff that works to objectify women and suggests women enjoy being beaten." "

This jives with what both Hershele and Shima have said about the first few volumes being just bad fantasy but not outright porn. Work has been extremely busy lately, but at some point I'd like to try finding the first couple books at the library and giving them a skim at least.

Really, the only reason I'm even giving this series a chance is because of how well-known it is. Also, good to have you back, Catalogue. I thought maybe you were dead in a ditch or something.

Okay, so the series as a whole isn't complete BDSM porn; it's just really, really stupid?

Pretty much.

Almost, Martello. Was (1) busy and (2) extremely suffering as a football fan. But it's over now.

[up] I think that's still in sync with those summaries: it was there all along, but ended up being the whole point.

This is borderline, but still erotica at best. I don't see it in the CVR page though, maybe three already voted for it and it's already in the resolved archive.

Erotica is just a fancy word for porn. There were three devil votes but we didn't fill in the disposition yet. It should still be in the unresolved queue.

Okay, so it's clean and lock - looks like we're done here.
