It's definitely been done before, but that shouldn't have any bearing on whether you use the idea.

Just checking how much has this, or something similar, been done before.
Ok so I have this origin story for this one member of a superhero team.
Apparently, he is a semi-famous stage magician. His tour takes him into a Middle Eastern country (don't know which one is an Acceptable Target or if I should just leave it unnamed). He is heckled by a few, but very loud, particularly religious residents in the audience.
He assures to the audience what he does is a result of years of honing his physical dexterity, cleverly designed instruments, and knowledge of human perception. Then right as he ends his brief speech by saying "I don't claim to have magical powers, because magic isn't real." he was struck by a lightning bolt from out of nowhere.
He survived though, but when he woke up he discovered can see things (fairies, jinns, etc) that normal humans couldn't see. So now he is neither Cursed with Awesome (audience perspective) or Blessed with Suck (character perspective).
