Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Isn't The Family for the Whole Family technically more about criminals rather than villains? But I object to it having real life examples for other reasons, like incompetency, contrived stupidity, and other stuff needing a plot.

Criminals are frequently villains, anti villains, or anti-heroes at best, though. So it's still calling people evil on some level. Even if they really did what's listed.

[up][up]Saying that a particular person has been convicted of a crime is a statement of fact, not a moral judgement. So there is plenty of room for tropes about criminals to have Real Life examples as long as people stick to facts and not personal opinion or unproven allegations.

This particular trope may not work for other reasons, but if we cut the Real Life section of this one I don't think we should you that has a reason to start cutting all the Real Life sections of all the crime tropes.

[up]Ditto. The trope in question has too many narrative elements as part of its description to count, but crime tropes, or at least the ones that don't require a moral element, should be able to have real life sections in theory.

Incidentally, The Family for the Whole Family is a real trainwreck of a trope.

I think Americans Hate Tingle should be added because of Flame Bait, Complaining, and it's long to list some of them, just like Values Dissonance.

What would you think about that?

Is there any reason on why Karmic Death becomes NRLEP? Is it because it sounds too much like Asshole Victim?

Karmic Death is going NRELP because it's a villain trope, and This Very Wiki isn't for calling RL people evil.

It is worth nothing that Americans Hate Tingle does not have a Real Life section, but does have sections for "Business," "Other" and a "People" which are much the same thing. Those sections need to be cut if we vote to make is a No Real Life Examples page.

My instinct was to vote down Americans Hate Tingle, but then I looked and noticed that the de facto real life examples are mostly "This Troper lives in a place while disliking something"

Well, maybe not mostly, but too many.

[up][up][up] @desdendelle: Speaking about Karmic Death though; and aside from being a villain trope, does it carries Unfortunate Implications saying that bad people deserve to die, just like Asshole Victim?

I don't see it so. AFAICT, Karmic Death is 'a villain dies in an ironical way, usually Hoist by His Own Petard'. There's nothing in it about him deserving to die.

I'm actually fine overall with the RL section from Future Imperfect, but too manynote  of the examples were entirely speculative, at least as worded (until I removed them just now)

[up]I'm curious: How can a trope about the future even have RL examples?

Thanks for doing that work. smile

^ It can't. There's a handful of NRLEP tropes listed because they're about the future, which obviously isn't now.

Also while I'm here, I'm adding Hitler's Time Travel Exemption Act to the next crowner (here). As a time travel trope, it's explicitly not possible in Real Life.

Off the top of my head not sure what to do about Analysis.Hitlers Time Travel Exemption Act, though.

[up][up]The trope isn't necessarily about the future (except in the sense that it's always the future, at least of the past). There are legit RL examples there, but "historians a century hence ..." isn't legit.

Analysis.Hitlers Time Travel Exemption Act: For me, it seems like it describes the Real Life reasons for the trope. Can't see NRLEP applying here.

Question about implementing the No Real Life Examples on Americans Hate Tingle:

I cut out all the "People" and "Other" examples as they were almost entirely about Real Life people and political issues.

Earlier I said that "Businesses" would also have to be cut, but now that I looked at it closer I'm not sure. I definitely want to cut a lot of the natter, especially about Wal Mart, and if there were any political rants going on particularly controversial companies like Halliburton or Backwater that would have to go, but...

What should our stance be on things like restaurants chains, cars and clothing being listed? In and of themselves, they are generally not Flame Bait. However, they are not related to works of fiction or storytelling, and while they could be considered entertaining (especially sports cars and donuts), they aren't really considered entertainment media.

^ Complaining (which is what a lot of the "Business" examples look like to me, at a glance) doesn't necessarily need to be Flame Bait to qualify as deletion fodder.

Also, as you said, they're not related to fiction or storytelling, which makes them doubly off-mission for the wiki. Remember that RL sections are allowed only on sufferance, "entertaining" doesn't change that or make them in any way "protected" (see Troper Tales before they were cut, which some defended by claiming entertainment value).

On Kaizerreich's post in the NRLEP discussion, do you think White Hair, Black Heart should be added to this? But I agreed with Kaize, because it's impossible to grow a silver hair at a younger age like a kids or a young adult.

" Sure, white/silver hair usually only occurs in the elderly but it is not an impossible hair colour without Dye Hard applied. "

And Gag Boobs needs to be added too, because it's NSFW. I know it doesn't have a Real Life section yet, but still...

Edited the White Hair, Black Heart entry. It's not the color itself that's the problem, it's that the hair is used as a hint for villainy.

It is interesting, yes, but why is part of it on the Analysis Page and some of it ( the same sort of thing) allowed on the Main page? It should all be on Analysis. None of it is an example. The trope isn't simply "trying to assassinate Hitler doesn't work" it's "Time traveling to assassinate Hitler never works." Until we can time travel into the past in real life, there are no Real Life examples.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
