Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Right. Anyway, I'd like to make Growing Up Sucks NRLEP. If you're wondering why, allow me to explain:

It's a rather subjective trope in Real Life and not everybody hates growing up. Some people actually enjoy it. I feel like a Real Life section would attract natter and complaining. The page doesn't have a Real Life section at the moment, but it does have this paragraph in the description:

Happens a great deal in the real world when someone leaves adolescence and their teen-age years behind and realizes that while childhood is not always a picnic, things are different when mom and dad aren't paying their bills anymore: they have to find a place to live, buy health insurance, work at a job they may not like in order to have money in the bank, and otherwise deal with all the things that made their parents so uncool and boring. One of the first steps into being a full-fledged adult is realizing all the sacrifices your parents had to make and the insane hoops they had to jump through to keep a roof over your head and food on the table...

To be honest, I find this paragraph somewhat debatable and not everyone looks at things that crop up when they grow up as bad things. Also, parents are not always so "uncool and boring."

Therefore, I wish to remove the aforementioned paragraph in addition to making the trope NRLEP.

It says it happens a great deal, not all the time. I don't see a problem with that paragraph in the description.

And if it doesn't currently have a RL section, I don't see any reason to make it NRLEP. Either it had one and it got cleaned and has stayed that way, or it never had one. In either case, it's not a problem.

(N.B. : The oldest edit in the history is from 2013, and none of them are either the clean-up or removal of a Real Life section. It looks like it never had one.)

Okay. Anyway, I'd like someone to look at the Real Life folder of Cerebus Syndrome. The examples look rather generic to me.

Hypocrite Has a Point has one example, and it's generic. I'm chopping it for that reason, but this also means there's no RL section to worry about...

I was going to remove the one "example" there for being generic, but Water Blap had it checked out. And yeah, it's not a trope we should apply to real people.

Have you thought of Tall Poppy Syndrome being discussed in here? The trope is about calling people bigots.

1) No, the trope itself isn't calling people bigots. The trope is "people don't like unequal outcomes, and try to "balance things out" by applying handicapping factors."

2) Does the Real Life section have a problem? I don't see one.

Last "example" was generic, so I cut it. The others seem reasonable and non-judgemental.

Hypocrite Has a Point has dropped below the 2:1 minium vote ratio, but for the sake of making sure it's stable (given it was previously at 3:1) going to wait another day before calling. Added 2nd Jun '17 at 04:06:43 AM, 1.6:1 (13)

A conversation in Ask The Tropers has a few users asking whether Frivolous Lawsuit should be NRLEP. It recently had a ROCEJ violation removed. While it looks to be too common to trope RL examples, some examples have notoriety, so will it be necessary to outright bar them?

One ROCEJ violation is not a reason for NRLEP at all.

Even the one about Trump is almost legitimate. I would say is except that it didn't actually go as far as filing suit. I did clear out a bunch that weren't frivolous — the suits were heard and a ruling was made on them — in many cases in favor of the plaintiff, which means by definition, the court didn't consider it frivolous.

I don't see a need to make it NRLEP — suits filed are a matter of public record so we have a way to find out if it's legitimate or not (I also deleted a couple examples that turned out to be hoaxes).

I am going to work on the description section a bit. It meanders. Tightening it up and making the distinction between the trope (suing when your case has no merit. suing fraudulently, and suing with a valid case but asking for a disproportionately large award) and what a "frivolous lawsuit" is in Real Life (suing when the case has no legal merit.) clearer should help.

It feels like something we shouldn't be documenting. It has no bearing on tropes; it's just a collection of funny (or tragic) stories. But if we can keep it to factual cases of genuinely frivolous suits, at least it'll fit the definition.

It's not steady still, but Hypocrite Has a Point has been dropping ever since the 3:1 vote ratio in the first "pending" post and is unlikely to recover, so I'm calling it to keep RL examples. Added 2nd Jun '17 at 04:06:43 AM, 1.13:1 (17)

Nothing pending at this time.

Question: Obvious Rule Patch.

Why do we have a Real Life page for a game mechanic? Should we have a RL page for a game mechanic?

Law, regulations, etc., don't quite seem to fit with the trope description.

^ There are enough decent entries at a cursory glance (the "no tag-backs" rule in tag, etc.) that it's likely worth combing through for valid examples, but I doubt there are so many as to require an entire page, and "Real Life" is probably a misnomer.

[up]I agree that "Real Life" seems to be a misnomer, at least in the sense that most of the examples are not the kind of examples we normally call "Real Life". In fact, many of them actually deal with game rules of some kind, such as the rules of contests. The contests are real-life, but the rules belong to the contest and not to RL, as it were.

It's funny that we often discuss folders named "Other" that are basically just Real Life folders in disguise ("The trope is NRLEP so let's call the folder "Other" to get around that"), but here we have a Real Life folder that should probably better be called "Other".

I was looking at an older crowner and I found that Disc-One Final Boss was called as NRLEP, but it was never added to the NRLEP page. If we put it in there, which folder should we put it under? I'm thinking it should be put under either "Morality" or "Narrative."

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
