Tomu: As the oft-quoted Fighteer put it, you can flag a work fitting those criteria, "but you'd better have a damn good reason".

Yes, I was throwing a fit over Otomedius and ticked the mods off. I've calmed down and at this point think it shouldn't get cut (doesn't mean I like it), but I still want to see what people have to say about it before a decision is made.

While we're on the subject, I flagged Uwakoi as it is the Spiritual Successor to the already cut Aki Sora and is every bit as explicit as its predecessor.

So, Corsair. Decided to check it out, and skim through: I am five chapters in out of twenty, and so far the amount of rape scenes, I think, equate to one per chapter. And then there is the rape is love portion on the trope page, which is played straight and for drama, and involve the main character Canale enjoying it. Canale has been enjoying it, too, since he was seven. Now, I might have missed that, or am not there yet, but I don't really feel like double-checking. At this rate it seems to pretty much be pornographic, or have a fair amount of it, with a loose plot. Sounds like grounds for cutting.

Also, Papa to Kiss in The Dark. Father-son incest*

, with the first episode strongly looking like rape ("but he enjoyed it"), while fuzzy to me for the second episode. Uncle is I don't know how old, but the son Mira is fifteen. Seems cut-worthy to me.

Kirepapa too. The father Chisato wishes to kill one of his sons' friends for getting too touchy-feely with Riju. Pretty sure it falls under pedophilia since he's twenty years older than the boy, even if the boy isn't sixteen yet. Thoughts?

Hm, rape sure is a rather common element in yaoi. What's up with that?

Dunno, but by this point I'm just kind of ignoring it at least in yaoi. The ages of the people involved are more relevant.

Titillation? Not saying all boys love comics are like that, but a lot of them are. And, for the record, unless I am missing it amongst all of the sparkles, it looks like it's not treated as that bad of thing— at least not something that won't be fixed in a chapter or so, for what it's worth.

Don't even get me started on that rant. It's why, though I like the aesthetic design and am a fan of yaoi and of Slash Fic, sometimes so much of it makes me facepalm. It makes me very annoyed to see rape treated that way, and very happy to see when someone treats rape in a legitimate and respectful of the victim way rather than as Rape Is Love.

Thankfully Rape Is Love it's getting a little less common as more enlightened writers (and as more writers who aren't just repressed fangirls) are getting into the game, but... UGH.

[up]Martello, isn't that a bit homophobic? Not everyone who reads or writes yaoi or Slash Fic supports rape or is a fangirl with no idea of how relationships work.

I assume it's the same reason why bodice-ripper-type romance novels involve a lot of sex with dubious consent. I don't know what the reason IS, but yaoi and bodice-rippers do target the same audience (older women).

[up] I think the theory about much of (though by no means not all) yaoi being like bodice-rippers is kind of true. Many of the readers and writers either don't care, have rape fantasies they want to see played out in a "safe" setting, or worst of all, think it's a Necessary Weasel because there's so damn much of it.

Partially bringing it up because it all seems rather dubious. I know, or at least I am pretty sure, there are no rules explicitly against it, but I can't see such stories that portray the subject in such a manner as being worth much talk, let alone even having such pages on them. As it is, it isn't exactly the brightest subject either.

Black Dove: How does wanting to kill one of your child's friends fo being touchy feely equate to pedophillia?

The thirty-five year old man is far too attached to his fifteen year old son. That was just a way to work it in.

I'd agree that yaoi is no worse than most bodice rippers. Well, except that no yaoi work could ever reach the heights of Knight Moves by Jamaica Layne for the sheer... o_O. I gotta go with the emoticon, because there are no words.

I would assume "Damned good reason" is something that will shake the heavens and the earth.

The idea behind exemptions is to exempt works. If the only time anyone would bother bringing up a work is because it's questionable, and whenever something is questionable, you consider that a "damned good reason" that's not really an exemption, now is it? Obviously, the troll-prevention elements might work to some extent (Sailor Moon for instance), but the bottom line is that if it's a rule it needs to be treated like one.

The nudity of Vampire Bund or whatever it's called is not itself a "damned good reason" to circumvent the exemptions, because that's really the sort of thing that would normally get a work off the site in the first place-it's like the rule isn't even there.

And that's precisely my point: Fighteer said "Damned good reason" Lu said "Rules are absolute" so the moderation doesn't appear to be on the same page on this, which is why I appear to be forcing the issue a bit.

A damn good reason would be like an explicit underage sex scene that the censors somehow missed. It would be something so obvious that no one hesitates to immediately cut it.

  • sniff* Ladies really do have dirty minds. Ladies read romance novels with plotlines that make the manga we're shocked by look mild. We even have bestselling Twilight BDSM porn :( Ok, she changed the names, but...

Bund appears to be on Hulu, but it's edited there for American Audiences. British ratings do matter, but 16+ is a higher rating than our cut off for probably ok. It's the equivalent of a soft R and that's where things are ok for P5 to look through.

It's not 18 everywhere actually. Britain considers 16+ to be an adult rating for media.

Off topic, there is yaoi that doesn't involve rape or shotacon. A good recommendation is Future Lovers - no Rape Is Love, no freakishly underage or "looks underage" uke, and actually treats the issues that come up in it with some degree of intelligence and responsibility.

I wish yaoi writers would look up to it as one example of what well-written, intelligent, respectful of actual gay and bi people yaoi can be, rather than always going for the Lowest Common Denominator...

Back on topic, sorry for the aside.
