Does Not Illustrate: Grim Up North get usage counts

1 Helter Skelter, Wed, 11th Apr '12 5:31:52 PM Relationship Status: Drift compatible
The picture depicts the North being a snowy, dangerous place—but it's missing what the trope is apparently actually about: how bad guys use snowy locations. Icecrown Citadel from the ominously named "Northrend" continent from World of Warcraft seems like an ideal replacement. The image was chosen last time by an Image Pickin' thread, replacing a different image of Icecrown Citadel for being a duplicate of Ice Palace.

The Skyrim picture was chosen mostly because the clock got set and nothing else suggested. It doesn't appear to be an actual example. This is about bad guys picking their lair of doom to be a snowy, cold place.

ETA: Also, the previous IP thread seemed to doubt this trope was really about bad guys in snowy places. The earliest known page from the Wayback Machine gives this description and follows suit with examples.

I think this might need a TRS. Why such a narrow definition? I see no reason why this can't be expanded to include depictions of the "north" being generally "grim" and dark. Like The North in A Song of Ice and Fire...and, yeah, TRS is thataway.

[up] Those are distinctly different tropes with different implications—though this is probably a subtrope of that.

[cut because I was wrong and apologize] I agree there should probably be a trope about the inhospitable north, but this one isn't it.

Woah, sorry, you misunderstood me. I was talking to myself - that's why I said it to cut off my own rambling. I can see how you misinterpreted it though, sorry about that.

I likely will start a TRS thread about it soon, though.

[up] Then I apologize. :) I took it completely the wrong way.

In any case, right. Any other suggestions?

No problem, like I said I could see how you would easily misunderstand.

Maybe something from Warcraft III or that stupid MMO based on it? Northrend, or something.

Northrend is on Ice Palace.

[up] One picture of it. I also suggested this in the OP. It pictures the city, not just the palace.

Further examples: 2, Angmar.

Kinda like the Angmar image, although the resolution of the game engine isn't great. Is that from Battle for Middle-Earth or what?

[up][up]Prefer the Icecrown one there. Gate one falls short of the "ice" aspect and Angmar of the "villain" one.

+1 for Icecrown.

Aw, it's such a pity we have to scrap that Skyrim picture, I wish there was a trope we could stick it to. Anyway, I like that picture in post 8 labelled "2".

First off, I think the idea of either broadening the definition or making two tropes, one of which is essentially "Evil Comes From The North" and the second is "The North Is a Tough Place" should probably be done.

As for picking an image for the Evil North idea, my first pic would be Icecrown if that image or a similar can be shrunk to an appropriate size, otherwize my pic would be for the Gate picture (shows up as 2 in Helter Skelter's post) because with all those Spikes of Villainy and such, you have to be trying to misinterpret what that gate is about. Plus the size is a lot closer to our needs right from the start.

I agree we should split the trope. I also vote for the first picture in post 8. Any ideas on somthing to write under it?

The clock's up, and since the second Icecrown pic has some consensus, it's up, potholed, tagged, and captioned. Locking up.
