I need help.

Can this game be Mobile Suit Gundam meets One Piece? If I need a reason, think of Elly. She could be an Expy of Nami. On the top of that, there's a green-colored swordsman (Citan and Zoro), a blond-haired guy with an eyepatch (Bart and Sanji), and a stoic girl (Emeralda and Robin).

Xenogears was released in Japan like six months after One Piece started running, and games take a while to make. The character designs are usually made pretty early on. Any similarities are probably completely unintentional. And the comparisons you list are of character design elements which aren't exactly that weird. Magic Knight Rayearth has a green-haired swordsman too.

The only anime I think XG consciously emulated were mecha. The whole game is a love letter to several mecha shows, some of which we in the States probably haven't even heard of.

Oh, we'v likely heard of them, japan doesnt have a whole lot of super-secret obscure mecha shows unless you count the ones that bombed and nobody remembers. But unless you're a mecha nu8t who plays super robot wars and the like religiously, yeah, its unlikely you'd catch at least some of the references.

Imagine what would it be like Elly fought against Nami. After all, I think they look the same.

I'm just sad we couldnt later recruit the elements. Combining Robots are to be used for JUSTICE after all :(

I did it, I finally beat Xenogears! Goddamn did that take forever, but now I'm ready for Xenoblade.

What the fuck was up with that second disc? That shit was rushed. I wish they had put all the effort from the first disc when the story was unimportant into the second disc when the plot was important.

[up]The most common story of what happened is that Square siphoned off the budget to put into Final Fantasy VIII by the time Disc 2 started development.

[up]It was known on release that that was exactly what happened. Final Fantasy VIII should be a poster child on this site for Troubled Production - its makers were tossing vast amounts of money at problem after problem and it sucked in further money from everywhere in terms of budget and time taken from programmers, artists on other projects that got thrown at FF VIII and so on.

Add this to Square realizing that much of Xenogears' content would go down like a lead balloon in the America of the time - it's effective skewering of organized religion and how it operates being its main stumbling block to being the kind of commercial success Square wanted, which was on the same sort of order that Final Fantasy VII gave them. This they thought would be a safer bet with Final Fantasy VIII if they ever got it finished properly, and Xenogears was effectively kneecapped as an artistic piece. That they released the game at all, even in its badly broken current state, is a minor miracle.

I need help for Pantheon pages for this game like Elly's.

If I need an entry, how about being Not So Different from Nami in One Piece?

And now I've caught up on that recap from Rope of Robots only to see that he/she/it hasn't updated since 2012. Fuck, that was a waste of time.

[up][up][up]How? How, apart from her appearance, is she anything like Nami whatsoever?

for all the comparisons people draw between xenogears and evangelion, the two are about fundamentally different things.

evangelion is only using all the western judeochristian imagery as a backdrop. most of that doesn't truly matter. what's important are the messages about isolation, crippling self-doubt, suicidal ideation, depression, etc. that's the core of Eva, it's all about emotional intimacy and what the lack of it and/or fear of it does to people. fans got so lost analysing a bunch of stuff which was probably only put in for Ruleof Cool that they seemed to forget that.

xenogears (as far as i understand anyway - i actually only played about 15 hours of it) has much more ambitious thematic pretensions about gods and the nature of religion proper, the religious imagery IS the plot, that's the entire point they had behind using it.

I'm going to respond to a post from several months ago because I need to distract myself.

[up][up] There's also the fact Xenogears, in spite of its layered plot, is actually a "straight' story. There are heroes and villains and a clear endgame. In the end, if you strip away all the fantastic characterization and labyrinthine worldbuilding, you get a pretty conventional story.

Eva, of course, is pretty much the anime posterchild for Deconstruction. It's all about taking expectations and then subverting them. Character Development is non-standard, the plot honestly doesn't matter apart from it being an excuse to look deeper at the characters, and overall it's just a distinctly experimental affairs. Ya know, in spite of the first ten or so episodes being generic as hell. I guess they needed to tease us and make us think Eva would be like everything else? I dunno, I just really hated the start of NGE.

It's Xenogears' 20th anniversary this year for both Japan and US.

https://www.reddit.com/r/XenoGears/comments/7id9fu/mitsuda_announced_a_xenogears_20th_anniversary/

Mitsuda is celebrating with a live concert this February. Somebody better fucking record this.

Also it's been like seven years since my last run, I really should do another playthrough.

Bump.

I purchased Xenogears off of the Playstation store some time ago. I really want to try it out. As soon as I'm done with Final Fantasy VII, I'll probably get to it.
