Interestingly, though the BSA's policy on gay scouts seems to be relaxing, they show no sign of letting atheists or agnostics join.

I have no idea. I imagine there will have been an unofficial ban on homosexual acts as not being morally correct for a Scout during the movement's early days. I imagine it wasn't acknowledged. Regardless, Scouting in the UK is very much pro-gay. I've seen people with t-shirts saying "Scout and Proud" etc.

@Polar: Nor do I think you should have to hide it. *shrug* You can still have your kids active in Scouting without being an official leader, and trust me, the ones who are official will welcome your help. Unless they're idiots.

In other news, the Gay Mafia has infiltrated the Vatican! I am totally shocked at these allegations.

They don't let atheists and agnostics join? You must be joking? Even in country plagued with fruitcakes like Poland, our Scout Association is secular. To such extent that some fruitcakes founded their own, fringe association because the main Scout Association is "godless"

[up] One of the twelve main tenets of boy scouts is "Reverent."* The scout oath also has us swearing to be "morally straight" and for most of human history, morality has been in the hands of the religious leaders. Note that neither of these by themselves bans homosexuality; morally straight =/= sexually straight, I think we can all agree, but because so many religions have treated those two as equivalent, therefore so has scouting. With public (and religious) opinions changing, scouting will too ... eventually. tongue

Letting atheists in, however, is probably not going to happen in the near future.* The overwhelming majority of scouting groups are hosted and usually partially funded by religious organizations, because so many secular groups don't want to. Hopefully with the whole Southern Baptist thing, some secular groups will step up and host scouting, giving them both insight and a greater voice to change BSA.

There are references to God in Polish Scout Association as well, but frankly, no one gives a fuck, at least in my region. Fruitcakes are not majority here.

Yeah, the papers are still talking about the boy scouts here.

I doubt it. AFAIK, claiming the Flying Spaghetti Monster also does not work, but there's no call to be a part of any specific religion that I'm aware of.

[up] I'm mad that the Baptists are taking away something positive from the lives of hundreds of thousands of teens and adults because they feel petty about BSA taking a baby step into the 21st century.

Bitching about change is what conservatives do.

They see it as a threat to their way of life. Which it is. No more white christian straight men automatically being superior to everyone else and entitled to everything they want is something they don't want to happen.

Anyone think at least trying to take some of the Christian influence out of public schools will stop the bullying of LGBT or at least cut it back? I mean if we didn't allow fear mongers like that "Abstinence or else you'll die" woman in, keep The Bible in theology classes and remove the stupid "Under God" part of the pledge, (I don't care if your a Christian you don't get preferential treatment in a national pledge in what is supposed to be a neutral nation. Especially since those two words were added out of Cold War Paranoia).

I mean it probably won't make the bullies less violent, but it might at least stop schools from allowing this kind of thing to go on, or might stop teens from feeling the school is on the bullies side (not always inaccurate) when they don't have to hear about gays going to hell.

[up] In the long run? Maybe. Bullying would probably get even worse in the short term though, considering how many people are ALREADY pissed off about the "lack of God" in schools (see, all the people who said the Newton shooting was due to no prayer in schools).

Oh yes the "lack of God" in schools when it's in the pledge and in science classes and the majority of students are Christian. Then they cry "your shoving the gay agenda on us" when a gay teacher isn't fired.

Massive Double Standard. Nobody should complain about the lack of God in public schools until we get the pledge back to it's original state, keep science class for scientifically backed information, and when some schools don't have prayer in graduations.
